Weather/rainfall app?

Apple weather app has been super inaccurate and I really wanna keep accurate tabs on rainfall for my native beds. What app/method do you reliably use to gauge rainfall totals?

Humane rodent deterrent?

Each AI tool says something different; chipmunks, squirrels, skunks. We’ve had mole issues but they haven’t gotten this close to the plants/don’t bother them. I also read they wouldn’t be ripping up the cardboard, but what do I know.

I am not sure what to do. They tore out one of my native plugs I planted on Saturday, I placed it back. We have 2 ft tall Chicken wire fencing around the whole bed, and 4 ft tall green garden wire fencing on the back row of this bed to protect the tall ones from deer. Nothing is buried underground though.

What do you think this is and how do I humanely prevent them from ruining my plants? AI is saying I have to dig a 24 inch deep trench with 1/4 inch hardware cloth around the bed, but I fear that they would just go into my other garden beds and wreak havoc/that would be incredibly labor intensive as we have 5 garden beds and one is massive, like 180 ft circumference.

Any ideas that wouldn’t break me? Any personal experiences? I don’t want to kill animals, just protect my plants. Thank you.

Painted corrugated metal edging - can it withstand our winters?

Looking to hear all about your experiences with corrugated metal garden edging. I am thinking about making a trench, fill it with class 5, tamper it down, place bricks on top of that, then on the outside edge, use 12 inch corrugated metal, buried 8 inches deep in the ground for chipmunk protection, as the final edging.

But I’m wondering if any of you have used corrugated metal that’s colored and has it withstood winter? Should I just get the “rust” color? Or plain silver. I don’t want the color to fade with our winters/it look bad. Any words of wisdom here would be greatly appreciated!

I get super into things and it becomes overwhelming

A huge part of my adhd, since childhood has been my obsessions/fixations with certain interests. (I’m def not on the spectrum). It’s been anything from Barney, Barbie’s, planes to adulthood fixations like strength sports, sewing/thrifting/sustainable fashion, politics and now most recently I can’t stop thinking about native planting and ecosystem restoration. I get so into my hobbies that I get sidetracked by my daily life and other interests/responsibilities. They consume me and honestly no medication seems to help with this.

I’m not even sure if it’s negative anymore. In my childhood, I developed an eating disorder in part because of this. I have a great relationship to my food and body though now. I’m almost gifted in a way I learned hundreds the names of native and invasive plants in my ecosystem in weeks. But it makes focusing on things like my health and friendships more difficult. I haven’t been able to focus on my job as much because I just love learning and researching future plants and shrubs and trees to add to our property over the years. I can’t even say that it’s because I’m super young because I’m 29 on Wednesday and married and a homeowner. My poor, also adhd husband has to deal with my plant-talk or whatever fixation it is at the time. It’s relentless and I’m a workhorse when I get my mind onto something, but I am just hoping for more balance eventually.

Has anyone else gone thru this? Does it get better with age? How do you curb your own brakes? My adderall works great for work but mostly my own brain and the direction it wants to go is the biggest barrier.

Where can I buy Buttonbush?

I can’t find it anywhere. I don’t want a nativar, I want the wild Cephalanthus occidentalis. They had it at Sunnyside Gardens but it’s sold out now. I really want at least one for my wetland backyard. Google/internet isn’t helping.

Anyone know where I can find one in/around the twin cities?

Making the best out of a bad situation

Twin Cities, west suburbs MN, Zone 5a.

Almost a month ago, my husband and I hired contractors to help us construct the base for a fire pit patio + regrade our yard. They got their bobcat stuck in our black dirt + pure peat marshy yard, did a shitty job and bc they uncovered peat, we couldn’t do the fire pit patio there anymore.

Well, we decided to make the most of the situation and apply for a Watershed grant for native planting. We got the grant and used the space we wanted to make the patio + then some for a new native bed!!! Obviously need to do some edging but we put in 100ish native plugs today :)

For the rest of the bare dirt, we’re going to seed a bee lawn after this heatwave, until we figure out what we want to do with the space. Yard is south-facing and we may want to grow food someday. Or we might end up expanding the large bed haha. Other features include river birch tree, native keystone tree to our area, and other native beds in the far right. We have a double parcel and eventually want to make the back portion behind the big silver maples a native wetland prairie :)

Storing new plugs until planting

Twin cities MN zone 5a. I received 90 plugs in the mail from MNL yesterday. They’re all full and partial sun natives. I am reading a lot of conflicting advice on how to store them before planting. I have to wait until our deer/rabbit fencing gets here as our backyard backs into a nature preserve and it’s not worth the risk.

Should I store them in my sunroom, in a south-facing window, making sure they don’t dry out? Or in my cool and dark basement?? I am reading conflicting things and it’s overwhelming me. I just want them to survive maybe 3-5 more days until the fencing gets here. Looking to hear what has worked for you personally.

Where to get good quality affordable topsoil delivered?

In the Twin Cities. I’m in west metro. I called West Metro Supply and Garden By The Woods and their prices were outrageous. $300 for just 6 cubic yards delivered. I am regrading and starting more native beds. Need weed-free high quality black dirt topsoil like 10+ cubic yards.

I am willing to drive and pick up a lot of bags of cheaper too.

Apply to watershed grants!

Twin Cities MN Zone 5a. Just a PSA to look out for grants from your local watershed for native planting. My husband and I just got a $3,750 grant to convert most of our yard space to native beds. Much more than our state’s Lawns to Legumes $400 program.

I’ll post pics and update on progress as we go, but just wanted to throw this out there for all of you!

Building a firepit patio on moist marshy soil??

My husband and I want to build a 16 ft diameter fire pit patio in our backyard. Problem is there is 6 ft+ of pure black dirt and peat under our lawn/in the patio area. We are doing the pavers but hired out for the class 5 fill/dirt fill in depression spots surrounding it for proper drainage. Contractors got their bobcat stuck. It’s all organic matter. They had never seen anything like it. They did not hit standing water though. We have a creek in the very back of our property.

I’m thinking now we have to build a raised patio, like 4-8 inches above lawn-level with super compacted geotextile class 5 base before leveling sand + pavers and a solid border, but we are not sure.

Anyone have experience building a patio in a similar type of soil situation? We live in Minnesota so have to be mindful of freeze/thaw too.

The project got so messed up now, contractors have been trying to get the stuck bobcat, and a bunch of the lawn is now ruined in attempt. Now we don’t exactly trust their judgment on how to proceed…

Kerman is getting really bad

My cousin got her car confiscated by IRGC because they saw video footage of her CIRCLING AROUND jan 8-9. Not even protesting!!

My cousin’s husband’s daughter’s place got raided because she received a text against the IR. They confiscated her phone and are going to unleash hell on the friend who sent it to her.

My family is saying Kerman is one of the most strict places in Iran rn and NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT IT.

Maintaining progress at 1-2x a week?

I’ve been lifting weights for 9.5 years, olympic weightlifting for 3.5 years. Recently, i’ve become so busy as a new homeowner on my landscaping projects and also planning my wedding, that I haven’t been able to lift more than 2x a week. I’m worried about maintaining progress. I’ve been super consistent until recently and it freaks me out. I’m still very active, literally hauling hundreds of bricks and digging, moving dirt, etc. but I just haven’t been at this place of life before.

My coach is ofc supportive and understanding and I don’t compete, but I’m looking to hear your experiences with this. When life gets in the way and how to maximize little time in the gym.

Where can I get my long thick hair cut for cheap?

I’m in the West Metro. My hair lady is great but I just cannot afford a $100 haircut right now. Anyone have any stylist/salon recs for affordable (under $50) haircuts for long thick straight hair?

I am open to great clips and such too, if I know which stylist to ask for! I tried a teaching salon once and the woman who did my hair super nervous because of how thick it is and messed it up, so prefer not to go that route.

I think I found the one

1950s raw silk ball gown. Only $360!!

For alterations, I would add elastic to the sleeves so I can be more comfortable, make the boning shorter, and add a bustle. Thinking about maybe adding a small bow in the back too. I am a pretty dramatic out there person so I was initially worried this would be too plain but with the silk ball gown drama, the champagne color, uniqueness w the pearly beads, adding a crazy veil, my divaness will still shine!

My wedding isn’t until mid-may next year, but when you know, you know!
