Effective Altruists as Anarchist Subversives

(From the beginning of the article)

"Most Effective Altruists don’t look like anarchists. The latter have a (charmingly) grungy flavor, the aura of half-dazed rebels perennially stumbling their way out of Woodstock reunions. By contrast, Effective Altruists have the trappings of recent MIT and Tufts graduates, lanky tech nerds and philosophy majors with an incomprehensible infatuation with “Pi Day” and something called “preference utilitarianism.” But Effective Altruism, as a movement inviting us “to do the most good,” contains the seeds of something far more radical than its adherents may suggest. Done right, Effective Altruism can augment the anti-authoritarian coalition that we need to undermine the polygamous marriage of materialism, authoritarian government, and unbridled corporate power."

Does limiting personal water usage decrease or increase suffering?

What are the advantages and disadvantages? I'm guessing those who donate to charities wouldn't want a higher water bill as it would detract from the donations.

How would it affect wild animal suffering? Others humans? Yourself?

What if states don't listen? A fundamental gap in x-risk reduction strategies

"Summary/TLDR: The EA Community exerts almost no focus on state sovereignty as a crucial consideration in mitigating existential risks. Efforts to mitigate existential risks in tandem with the international community have broadly restricted themselves to technical problem-solving, incentive-building and capacity-building. This leaves out a considerable set of cases where states are non-compliant with actions that could improve existential security. As a relative newcomer to the community who has an academic background in international relations and international law - accompanied by personal experiences as a political activist agitating against authoritarian governments - I find this to be an incredibly obvious and considerable problem, that has been relatively neglected by the community."

Why we ignore the suffering of wild animals: Understanding our biases

"Literally, quintillions of animals are suffering and dying right now in the wild, due to disease, hunger, thirst, excessive heat or cold, and other factors. Yet, most people—including those who express concern for animals—fail to give importance to this issue. Why?

In this article, we explore the cognitive biases that lead us to ignore one of the world’s largest sources of suffering and death. Understanding these biases can help us think more clearly about our moral responsibilities."
