Wes Streeting now using Green Party policy to win votes
Wes Streeting has made his first major proposal since leaving Keir Starmer's cabinet by calling for a wealth tax.
The former health secretary has called for capital gains tax to be equalised with income tax, saying Britain needs a "wealth tax that works."
Speaking to the BBC, Streeting said the reform would address a system that was "penalising work", and would encourage investment by offering lower rates of capital gains tax to "genuine" entrepreneurs.
The Labour MP resigned from Starmer's government last week and is widely expected to be part of a leadership challenge to the PM.
Was someone deliberately leaking false info to the Times or did things not go as planned?
‘A frontrunner to be the Green Party candidate in Makerfield shared posts that claimed Israel is “ruining the world”.
Hayley Pierce, a portrait artist, is understood to be the Greens’ preferred choice to take on Andy Burnham and Reform UK in the upcoming by-election.
Party sources said the mother of two, understood to have been selected by local party members at a meeting this week, was undergoing vetting by Green Party HQ in anticipation of the announcement

greenparty.org.ukWondering about what the campaign strategy might be to deal with specific attacks from Labour/Reform should they come like with G&D
They mainly used the drugs policy but also mentioned sex work, and notably Zack decided to drop a podcast episode about sex work today which is well worth a watch.
I remember someone mentioned that previous Labour governments had a report reccomending they change existing drug laws and they completely ignored it, so I wonder if it would be helpful to explore that more fully for any potential campaigning efforts going forward.
How well prepared do you think we are with G&D now under our belts, did we learn anything from that more broadly?
Here's the pod episode if you want to check it out:
He’s getting backlash for previous support for trans people which comes across relatively straight forward and ‘normal’ - given that transphobia is much less politically popular than anti immigration, combined with his resistance to Palantir in Manchester… maybe he might limit some of this
telegraph.co.ukCandidate selection announcement?
The anticipation is killing me lol, it was today wasn’t it, when’s the vote?
This poll suggests Burnham wins while we significantly improve our vote share, roughly according to the local election results in the area.

What is the value of having Greens in the House of Lords?
Good that we’ve got representation at all levels for these sorts of opportunities
Reform’s candidate for the by election is a local plumber - where have I heard that before?
Burnham has also been confirmed as Labour’s candidate. So Greens and Lib Dem’s still to go, maybe SDP if they’re open there? Monster Rabing Looby Party going for this one? Count Binface might have to for the next one
So apparently there’s a meeting for the Wigan and Leigh party tomorrow (today lol bc I can’t sleep)
Members are getting an e-mail to collate votes.
I really hope people give their genuine feelings and not get stuck from peer pressure from those who maybe don’t align with our values as much as they claim to.
Hopefully we’ll start to get some resolutions as the week goes on.

Maybe the only and best argument for Burnham that remains.
HBO series struggling already
HBO’s #HarryPotter series is recasting Ginny Weasley in Season 2 after child actor Gracie Cochrane exited the role due to “unforeseen circumstances”:
The second season is currently in production at Leavesden Studios outside London.
Why Black Britain is flirting with the Greens but not dumping Labour
Idk if anyone posted this here before the elections, but wonder if anyone can shed some light on what’s being done to earn the trust of ethnic minorities in the broader U.K. (not just London) ?
General post about trade unions
Does anyone have any updates on where discussions with them are for the party?
I saw Zack make another post recently reminding people that we want to reverse all the anti trade union laws so I wonder if he’s been speaking to them again.
I know there are broader discussions that were being had but as far as I could guess I imagine they will be on hold somewhat while the leadership contest sorts itself out.
I can never remember which is which and am aware some of them are more hesitant around climate action, which is part of why I think it’s really important to get them on board with a broader green movement.
I’ve think it would be really helpful for a couple of the SCG to come over and defect, I’ve seen a few more people start bringing up how they wish Clive Lewis could put himself forward to lead Labour again, and he’s also paid by trade unions - and I started to think maybe with the Green rules around taking donations, do you think that might be part of why certain MPs are unable to commit to joining, would those unions still need convincing?
The NI Greens had their conference this weekend
I know they were hoping they’d get a boost from the local elections over here as well as Wales and Scotland. Does anyone from over there have any updates? I know they don’t tend to post membership numbers but was looking as we’re getting close to overtaking Labour’s numbers and we’ve got to include the whole union in that.
Overall Labour’s official numbers would also include potentially 2,000 from NI Labour or even 8,000 from the other party over there that tend to co operate with them.
How are things going over there?
After the G and D result, Zack said he was looking to see which other by elections might pop up.
Andrew Gwynn resigned hoping Burnham could come in, so it seemed that wasn’t gonna happen so soon. But it is and now in a seat we are believing ourselves unlikely to win.
Farage’s seat is being investigated but I don’t blame anyone for having zero faith in it leading anywhere.
There’s also 2 Scottish By elections coming up as a result of SNP taking up Scottish devolved parliament seats instead, but having looked a the electoral calculus we got around 4% in 2024 for both seats, and they’re seen as safe SNP seats although one is possibly a target for the conservatives - tho Greens generally can do well in conservative areas so I wonder if there have been any thoughts up there about I / bit I suppose our machinery/resources are much tighter in the Scottish party?
Presumably improving our vote share would still be a worthy success?
Does anyone think there’s much reason to see any other by elections pop up between now and the next general election.
It would be really good if we could get a bit more diversity in our parliamentary team to help show how well we can scale up before the big test of 2028 …?

thenational.scotWith speculation about a Clacton By election, anyone know how well the Green Party in that area are going?
I’d fancy our chances to make a splash there
