First ever placement tips

Hi everyone! I have my first ever placement coming up at the beginning of November and I was just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to make the most of it and be the best nurse I can be for my patients?

My first placement is in a Geriatric evaluation and management ward :)

What is wrong with my stomach?!?!

18F

Medical history: Stage 1 endometriosis, asthma, hayfever, depression and anxiety

Symptoms:

- Almost daily Diarrhoea

- Food sensitivities to every single thing I eat

- Daily bloating

- Rectal bleeding at least weekly

- Fatigue

- Severe flare ups, happened 6 times over the past year: Severe nausea, vomitting, SEVERE SEVERE pain (tugging, stabbing that causes me to faint), fatigue, lasts for At least 24 hours

I had a laparoscopic surgery for my endometriosis just over a month ago and I thought these symptoms were bowel endometriosis however I’ve had these symptoms prior and post surgery. I have had all of these symptoms all my life but they have progressively worsened each year.

Where should I travel in Europe in January?

Hi everyone! Where should I travel in Europe in January?

I am doing 2 weeks in Rome for a university exchange program and I’m planning to stay in Europe for 2-3 weeks after.

Where should I travel to? If you suggest somewhere, please let me know how many days I should stay there for and any places I must visit in the country. Thank you!

When will this get better?

Im 18F and I suffer with depression and anxiety.

I have begun suffering loneliness over the last two months.

I feel like there are tight wires choking me so I can’t breathe every time I wake up or try to fall asleep because the loneliness is drowning me. I feel empty but also full of sadness and a longing to feel happy and excited for a new day. Each day feels repetitive and grey.

I question why people don’t ask to see me. Am I too boring? Do I seem too sad? Is there something wrong with me? Are there other friends better than me? I feel guilty for feeling jealous of my friends who get to spend time with lots of friends and live a fulfilling life.

It feels like there is a constant pit in my stomach

I just don’t know what to do anymore. I’m 8 years into my journey eith mental illness and  nothing ecer seems to help me, Im at the point where I’m questioning if I have been misdiagnosed because I have tried 7 antidepressants and 12 different doses and I have seen little to no results. I have seen many different psychologists, tried reading self help books, try to do self care when I have time and energy/motivation. I’m also a science nerd so I try to read the latest research but I’m doing everuthing these journals say

I hate feeling lonely

Hi Im 18F and I suffer with depression and anxiety.

I have begun suffering loneliness over the last two months. Every morning and every night I hope someone will message me and check in with me the way I check in with them, or invite me out. But they don’t.

How do you get 10k steps?

Hi everyone! Please no judgement but how do you get 10,000 steps? I am not lazy I'm just not a walker or big on cardio BUT I think me only walking 4k steps a day is holding me back from losing weight. I find I get bored on walks and I don't know how to push past the 30min mark.

Are there any good podcasts or playlists you listen to that keep you busy on your walks? I really like anything science, health, crime, politics related and I listen to all music except country music.

Is it better to do 2 walks in one day or 1 big walk?

How do you turn up every day?

Thank you!!

How can I make my rabbit live as long as possible?

hello everyone! my mini lop is 4 months old and I’m giving him oxbow junior pellets, good quality oaten hay, veggies and herbs (rabbit savvy vet recommended starting them slowly from 12 weeks old I’m from Aus). I’m very pro science so he has been vaccinated and I’m waiting for him to get spayed/neutered at 6 or 7 months old. He’s just a bit underweight as he had parasites in his poops which stunted his growth so just waiting for him to get a bit chunky.

What else can I do to make sure he lives a long and healthy life? and what SHOULDN'T I do?

Stage 1 endo feeling confused and upset

Hey everyone, I had my laparoscopy/hysteroscopy/ insertion of mirena yesterday at the Royal women’s hospital. Everyone was so so lovely. I had 5 surgeons, 3 AGES fellowships 2 without but they were all fantastic. Excision surgery was performed I am in horrendous pain. I have taken so much pain medication and nothing seems to be helping me.

I feel a little bit overwhelmed and confused because I was told my ovaries are immobile in an ultrasound that was not a COGU scan and instead, in the excision surgery they found endometriosis on my pouch of Douglas, left and right you to Uterosacaral ligaments and my right pelvic side wall. They said that I have stage one endometriosis and that it is worth two points. I believe the scale can go up to 40. I feel a bit upset because I’m questioning whether I have been over exaggerating all this time. I always used to tell myself that the stage of endometriosis doesn’t mean anything but I cannot take my own advice because I’m feeling a bit upset. I was in pain daily from the age of 12 to 18, which I am currently. I know that I had significant pain but I don’t understand how I am only stage one.

However my experience at the hospital was amazing!!!!! The nurses were fantastic and so were the doctors. Somehow I was the first PM surgery and ended up being the last to leave. I believe this was due to my pain which they did everuthing they could to help me.

I feel so unconfident in my body

Hi everyone! I am 18 and I have suffered with endometriosis since 12 years old. I started taking slinda/slynd 1 year ago and since then I have gained 8kg. I’m currently 75kg and I don’t know what to do. I constantly look inflamed and I always have horrible bloating that makes me look 7 months pregnant. I try to eat healthy but from the slinda and antidepressants, my appetite has increased a lot! I go to the gym 4 times a week and I strength train and do about 20-30mins of cardio.

Some people say pilates is great at reducing inflammation for people with endometriosis and some also say that I shouldn’t be strength training. I feel so lost as to what to do.

I also want to try the anti inflammatory diet but I find it very hard to stick to as I’m used to eating a lot of the foods that cause inflammation. How have you started anti inflammatory eating? Were there any meals or websites that helped you?

How do you stop thinking about work once you go home?

Hi everyone, Im a nursing student and I’ve been reading a lot of posts about students being bullied or even senior nurses being bullied in hospitals/work place as well as dealing with abuse from patients and patients passing away/dying. How do you stop thinking about this once your shift is over? Im the complete opposite of cold hearted and although I have gone through some very difficult times I can still get emotional (please no judgement). How do you deal with the possible aftermath of hard shifts once you get home?

CPD ideas - Women’s health in particular but open to anything

Hi everyone! I have a really big passion for women’s health and I have been trying to find some CPD for it. I found a good jean hailes one but I’m trying to find some more. I also can’t find any women’s health conferences. When I say women’s health I mean anything related to endometriosis, adenomyosis, menopause/peri, periods, hormones, sexual health etc. I’m also wondering what some great CPD resources are in general? For example are there any really great organisations that offer CPD which you’ve found helpful, this can relate to any area of nursing. Thank you all!!!

Hi everyone! I am a first year student at ACU in Melbourne and I have been accepted into the Saint Vincents clinical school. I am so so so excited about this. I'm keen on getting a job as an AIN next year and while my grades so far have been mainly HDs and Destinctions I have had a few Credits. Im just curious as to whether my grades will be taken into account when applying for an AIN position most likely with Saint Vincents. I know I still have a semester to go before I can apply for AIN positions so hopefully my grades will improve by the end of the year. I was also wondering what else is considered when applying for an AIN position eg. healthcare volunteering and what tasks do AIN's complete?

My bunny did this weird thing with his head before. He is still eating drinking and pooing. He is 13 weeks old and vaccinated. Does anyone know what this is? He licked his tongue after so is it grooming? but I just don’t understand why he’s moving his head up and down like that. This is the first time it’s happened today (happened once yesterday). Is this common?
