(Flashpoint Campaigns: Cold War) This is my first hex-and-counter style wargame. Finally managed to cream the commies after (losing and) restarting the scenario 5 times 🥳

Migrated to this game from Warno because I have low APM.

A Time to Dance Scenario. The Soviet breakthrough is halted at the border after the 76th guards suffered 70% losses.

Lost 2 tanks (to soviet air superiority) in exchange for 60 soviet tanks. Got a bit lost a couple of HQ units because I got a bit overzealous and sent them directly to the front.

Any recommendations for a (preferably true solo) tactical level late cold war game?

I am looking for a game that can be either played true solo or has elements that facilitate me to play both sides (eg: gameplay does not rely on opposing sides to hide information from one another/the turns are straightforward enough so that I have enough mental capacity to track both sides, etc.)

As for the scale, I do enjoy the tactical aspect more because I hate the idea of managing supply lines. The smallest unit in game should preferably be an infantry squad/individual vehicles.

For time period, late cold war is preferred because the equipment is recognizable and dealing with 21st century information warfare complexities don't seem particularly fun. (Am open to recommendations to 21st century stuff if the rules are good though)

Am almost a complete beginner to hex and counter so recommendations are welcome!

Tried out printing decals on my inkjet printer. Don’t think it went very well. At least I’ve got an underpainting to work with!

This is despite varnishing with lacquer varnish. Some of the ink still managed to get dissolved by the decal softener, leaving unsightly smudges. The decal is also limited by my printer’s shit resolution.

One silver lining to come out of this is that the general shapes and colors are all laid out for me to just recolor everything using a good old fashioned paintbrush

I’ve can get a sealed circle undone campaign expansion for $70 USD at my local game store, should I get it even though I only have the Chapter 2 core set?

I only have the chapter 2 stuff. I know that FFG has a list of suggested substitutions for the core set, but I want to know if playing only the campaign expansion with the substituted cards is worth the $70 price tag. If not, I’ve got to shell another $40 USD for the old core set.

I read that circle undone is not the best expansion. If I only have the chapter 2 investigator decks, is it still worth it to get it, or should I pass?

Had a mental break after I messed up sponging, so I decided to just messily dab paint onto the mini. Was cathartic. This is what it looks like before I dunk it in isopropyl alcohol. fml.

Turns out sponging is more difficult than it looks on those YouTube videos I watched. Ruined the mini early on in the process and left some visible stains.

Had a bit of a mental breakdown as a result and decided to just dab on colors with an oversized brush onto the mini to vent. This is the result.

Say hi to Zachary before he gets dunked into a jar of isopropyl alcohol.

Edit: huh, the replies made some good points. I’ll keep ol’ Zach around for now and work on his 3 buddies before deciding what to do with him

Any single ally recursion decks?

New to the game, after trying out some decks, I realize I really like the idea of playing the same single ally over and over again.

It scratches a mental itch of wanting to repeatedly let-die/sacrifice and bring back a single guy over and over again in a time loop that I find really satisfying.

Any suggestions?

Anyone open the game just to fantasize about going on a vacation to the map locations? Burnt out doing SASO and stopped playing years ago. I still sometimes open the game just to look at the scenery and imagine I am there.

FYI Gundam weapon stands work as a great replacement for flight stands. They are taller, (slightly) modular because you can attach more joints to the stand.

Shown next to the standard flight stand for scale. Don’t know how tournament legal it is, although you can just attach the Gundam stand to the GW base (GW’s hole is slightly smaller, which may require a bit of widening).

I just hate how the planes are flying lower than the titans.

Painted ghouls from Cthulhu: Death May Die. I used to want to put my best into every mini, but then got quickly burnt out, so this is the slop I came up with after some drybrushing and contrast paints

I go into a mild panic thinking about the mountain of plastic I still have unpainted.🫠
