Giving two weeks notice before or after manager’s PTO?

I received a job offer today (Tuesday) that I am going to accept. My boss is away on PTO Wednesday- Friday this week, so I planned to put in my notice the Monday she returns. That timeframe aligns well with an already scheduled vacation I have, so I don’t want to put off telling her since I can’t push my two weeks any later. I also didn’t want to tell her before she leaves because A. That seems rude and B. I wasn’t planning to sign the offer tonight, as there is a lot to read over.

However, I just got reminded that there is a big company meeting on Monday and she’s going to be engaged with that throughout the day.

I care about my boss and want to be thoughtful about this conversation. I know she doesn’t see it coming, and we are heading into our busy season, so the timing to leave isn’t ideal. I want to be empathetic and tell her at a time she can receive it, versus spring it on her at a bad time, but I truly don’t know what the right time is.

And I know all the things people will say. I’m replaceable. The company can deal with it. And that’s true. But my manager is a human being who has treated me well, and therefore it is important to me that I treat her well in this conversation. I just need help figuring out what that looks like. Any advice?

Sale ended right before I bought the birthday gift

This is a silly little vent but I need to get it out because I’m SO annoyed right now!!

My husband’s birthday is coming up and he’s been complaining he no longer has any good t-shirts (many are very old and have gotten holes, shrunk, etc). There’s one shirt I knew he wanted, and when I went on the website, they were having a massive t-shirt sale! Most of the $25 shirts were on sale for $10. A steal! So my plan was to buy a whole bunch of shirts and make some sort of game where he’d open multiple gift bags on his birthday and each would be a t-shirt. Then he’d rank them or categorize them or something to determine which he liked and wanted to keep. Or maybe make a display like at a store or something, I don’t know, something cute.

Knowing they were so cheap meant I could buy a whole bunch, and give him tons of options, as I’m not always good at picking things out. I could’ve gotten 7 or 8 shirts! But as I was adding things to the cart, he walked in and I closed the browser window. And then what did I do? Get distracted and forget.

So here I am at work and I realized -oh! The shirts! - so on my lunch break I open the browser tab on my phone only to find the sale ended. So what yesterday would have been 7 or 8 shirts is now 3 or 4 for that price. I’m so mad at myself for forgetting once he later left the room again!

Anyway, that’s my vent. Now I need to decide what to do and I’m annoyed.

Word in Farsi for goddaughter to call us

My husband and I recently became godparents, but not of the religious sort. His friends asked us to be godparents in the sense that we will mentor, guide, and support their daughter as she grows.

The baby’s mom is Persian as is my husband. We don’t want to use English or Farsi words for aunt or uncle, as they have actual aunts and uncles on both sides who will be given those names.

I know there isn’t a similar word in Farsi, so we are trying to come up with something distinct for her to call us. Does anyone have any recommendations?

What is considered IP in corporate learning? (aka what happens when you leave?)

I have been at my current company for a few years and have built multiple ILTs from scratch that I facilitate. I am currently searching for a new job, which has me wondering about what is considered my IP and what belongs to the company?

I know that the company will continue using the courses I built and will find new people to facilitate, and of course I have no problem with that, as they were built for the company. But I’m wondering if it is considered wrong or even illegal (in the US) to download my materials and facilitator guides if I leave for a new job. Of course I wouldn’t just copy and paste those courses in a new company, but having my notes and materials would be beneficial if I ever build something with a similar theme or topic.

Does anyone have experience or insights with IP in corporate learning?

Deciding if new opportunity is right for me and if I should leave at all

I have been at my current job for 3 years. There is a lot that is good, and at first I was happy with the culture, but I am now seeing a lot of cracks in the facade, so to speak, and it no longer feels like the right fit. In my department specifically, I feel angry all the time, as there is a lot of inequity surfacing, and things have shifted with workloads and oversight. I'm overall just not happy anymore. But I also have gotten a promotion and raises in my time there, and the work itself is not stressful. I have also hit the point that I feel comfortable in the company as a whole. There is a lot of tenure there, so it took a while to really feel like one of the team. So while I am unhappy and want to leave, I also question if I should just "quiet quit" and keep going. The pay is good enough, I'm trusted, I have my own office, I like some parts of the work, and I enjoy being around many people in the company.

If I do leave, I am not just looking for any job, but something that will actually be an improvement, so I have been applying only when something seems worth it.

I have been in the interview process at an amazing company, and just finished the 4th round, which was in person. I have one final in-person round next week, and from there I will know the decision. Because of this, I am weighing out what I would do if I were to get an offer, as right now I am very conflicted. Above I outlined my thoughts on my current role, and below are my thoughts on this new role.

The Pros:

  • The company culture is outstanding. All four people I've met with share similar sentiments about what they love about the company, and the values come through in the conversations with them. It is exactly the corporate environment I have been looking for. Even small things like a cafeteria with free snacks and fun company-wide challenges and activities.
  • The job itself is an amazing fit. It offers a lot of autonomy and creativity doing work the work I want to be doing, and is a new role, which means I get to build it out myself. That is honestly exactly what I want to do, which is very exciting.
  • My husband's friend works there and referred me. In this job market, I know how lucky I am to have this "in", and am sure that got my resume pushed to the top. I know it would be hard in another role to get that. He has also been extremely happy about this company and the culture, saying it's the best he's ever experienced.

The Cons:

  • For this particular role, I learned that travel is required at least 4 times per year. I knew there was a bit of travel, but I didn't at first know it was this often. This is my biggest con about the job, for a few reasons:
    • I am not good on planes and dislike flying.
    • I get motion sick on planes and in cars, and all of the out of state locations are about a one hour car ride after leaving the airport.
    • I am a major homebody and get homesick very easily. I have a hard time being away from my husband and our pets. I have been this way since childhood and always struggle being away from home.
    • I foster for the animal shelter, and you can't ever predict how long a foster might be with you until adoption. Travel will mean I have to send fosters back to the shelter if I can't find a foster sitter, and that is not ideal with the types of fosters I take in (and with my husband's work schedule, he can't fill in for me)
  • Most of the company is made up of cubicles, but this team sits in a large room with desks in one open space. I currently have an office and have no issue going from that to a cubicle. But to go from an office to just a desk feels like a massive shift. There is no privacy, plus, the desks were small and I have no idea where I would store anything. It may seem small, but to me this feels like a really big change in my day-to-day environment. I feel I would be very distracted and disjointed.

I am truly conflicted on what I would do if I got an offer, and want to sort out my thoughts better so I am prepared if it were to happen. I know the pros are all amazing, and part of me thinks it is smart to get into the company even with these cons, as the company is known for growth opportunities. I could potentially take this job, and in a few years move to a role that require less travel and could have a better workspace. But on the other hand, the idea of doing this much travel, even for a few years, stresses me out. I know I would grow in overcoming my fear of flying, but I don't know if I can change the motion sickness and the homesickness.

Thank you in advance for any insights, guidance, or advice! I am completely stuck trying to decipher my feelings.

That gut feeling that it wasn't your best...*sigh*

I just finished an interview that I know wasn't my best, and I'm feeling bummed about it. Here's how the process has played out so far.

My friend works for the company and referred me, so my recruiter screen was only a few days after I submitted my application, and my first round with the hiring manager was that week. She was a bit hard to read, but did say she saw my passion, which I thought was a good thing. She was away for a week, and when she returned I was invited to the next round, which took place the following week. I had a great interview that round where I was told he was definitely recommending me to move on. Within two days of that interview I was called to schedule the next round, which was today.

This interviewer was not only hard to read, but also didn't ask questions as clearly. It seems this interviewer was filling in for who would normally conduct this round, as that person is away this week, and it seems they want the process moving forward. So maybe he hadn't done as much preparation about questions to ask? I'm not sure. He was nice, and a good listener, but I truly could not tell what he thought of my responses. He seemed curious in a bad way versus a good way, if that makes sense.

And because some of the questions weren't as clear, I had a harder time answering. For example, one question I asked him, "Do you mean X?" to make sure I answered correctly, and he tried to clarify, but I didn't want to seem like I couldn't comprehend so I did the best I could to answer. But now, I think I have a better idea what he was asking and can think of a much better example I could have used! I am kicking myself that I used the same project to answer this question as I had the question before, as there is so much more about my experience I wish I had shared.

I'm now looking at the interview and thinking that I have no idea if he liked me or not, which is especially tough coming off of the last round where I had reassurance. He also made it clear that he has more people to interview in this round, which did shock me as I thought by this point it was probably just two of us left, and which also tells me there are more rounds to come than I had anticipated, if I get to continue.

What I'm now left wondering is what is likely the "debrief" stage that will happen next? If, between the three interviewers, the first two liked me and this one did not, how big of an impact might that make on whether or not I move forward? Of course, I don't know if he liked me or not, I just know that it wasn't my best, and that I did not share some of the stories and examples I had planned to because I was thrown off by some of the questions.

My gut is telling me I wasn't great, and I am sitting here feeling pretty bummed about that.

Help preparing for a third round with a director that seems unrelated to the job

I have a third round interview in a few days and am trying to figure out how to best prepare. This is for a job at a large manufacturing company, but the role is on the training team which is under the HR umbrella.

Round 1 (not including the phone screen) was with the head of the department who I would report to, and was about my background, skills, and experience with a few behavioral questions.

Round 2 was with an HR business partner who works with this team and was almost entirely behavioral.

Round 3 would normally be with the HR director, but they are on vacation. So instead, my third round is with a manufacturing director.

I am glad that it seems they want the process to move forward instead of waiting for the other director to return, but I am truly not sure how to prepare. Is it likely to be more behavioral questions since this person’s role isn’t directly connected to this function within the company? I know there’s obviously some level of collaboration with this person, and I do plan on asking to hear about what that looks like. But I doubt I would be asked specific things about what I bring to the role since he wouldn’t have that specific level of knowledge. And the last round was entirely behavioral so I’m wondering if it’s normal to have another similar round.

Any insight or advice or thoughts are appreciated!

Second round interview with HE Business Partner- What should I expect?

I had a first round virtual interview with the department manager. Now I have scheduled a second round virtual interview, this time with a Senior Human Resources Business Partner. I’m not sure what to expect as I’ve never interviewed with someone in such a role.

Does anyone have any advice or experience?

Do I apply now or wait until I know a show is casting?

There is a game show I want to apply for and I see the application on the website is accessible. However, one of the questions is about dates free for filming, and those dates already passed for this year. Is it worth it to submit an application? Or will it just get tossed aside because of the timeframe? Is it better to wait until it has dates for next year?

Case similar to "always on" or "work in" style

I got my Neo the other day and was thinking about getting a case similar to the "always on"/"work in" style. I've seen people use those and have always thought it was a great way to protect a laptop without taking it in and out of a case all the time.

Has anyone seen this style of case for Neo? If not, any other recommendations? I've never done a hard shell or any other type of protector for my previous Macbooks, but Neo seems more fragile and I want to be sure to protect it!

Will the right brush and hair dryer help remove frizz?

I’m in my late 30s and recently got highlights for the first time which caused me to decide to put more effort into my hair. For years, I simply used the blowdryer while checking emails and that was that.

I did a lot of research and found some products I really like for leave-in conditioner and heat protectant. But I’m still using a wet brush and a hair dryer I don’t like.

I want to preface by saying I’m not looking to spend big bucks! Just looking for recommendations that I are better than what I’m using.

First, what type of round brush would you recommend for beginners?

Second, my current hair dryer blows way too strongly. Even on the lowest setting I feel it blows my hair so much that it adds to the frizz problem. Does anyone have a hair dryer they like under $100 that the low setting actually feels low?

Thanks for any tips as I learn how to properly care for and style my hair for the first time! If you have any other thoughts on reducing frizz I appreciate that as well!

Hit apply and then realized a friend works there

I am kicking myself! I found a job posted on LinkedIn and spent time tailoring a great resume. I submitted the application, then went back on LinkedIn to message the hiring manager. It was at that moment I saw a familiar face that showed a connection, and it was my husband’s close friend! I’m so annoyed because if I’d seen that sooner, I would’ve asked if I could put his name as a referral on the application. Now that I’ve submitted there’s no going back in.

So my question is: Is there anything I can do now after the fact? This is a large global company, so I doubt the friend knows the recruiter or has a personal connection there. I’m I screwed or is there something I can do to utilize this connection?

How to clean scrub brush?

I use this scrub brush to wash dishes for my foster cats/kittens. When it got gross in the past I’d pull a new one from the pack. I’m on the last one and rather than buying more and being wasteful, I’d rather just learn how to clean it. You can see the mildew and grime in there and it has an odor.

If anyone has tips for how to clean this I really appreciate it!

Mom looking for her kittens?

I’ve been fostering a family of mom and kittens for about a month. All came to me undersocialized but the kittens made good progress, hit 2 months/2 pounds, and were adopted. Mom got spayed the same day as the kittens, and since coming home, has been distressed, crying out and barely eating unless I bring her a liquid treat.

I’m wondering if it is normal for a mom cat to look for her kittens once they’re gone? Everything recorded on my foster camera overnight is her walking around the foster room crying out. She is moving at a frantic pace and seems to be checking out every spot in the room as she cries out.

I feel very sad that she’s having trouble. While she’s made some socialization progress, she’s still not comfortable with human touch, so I can’t even pet her to try and comfort her. And this behavior is very different than when the kittens were here. When I wasn’t around she was very chill, laying around and letting the kittens run and be crazy while she watched. Now it seems she can’t be still and is spending so much time wandering the room and crying.

Has anyone experienced this before? If so, is there anything you’ve done to help? Does it tend to continue for a long time? It’s hurting my heart to see her this way so I appreciate any advice!

How do I figure out what is next?

I started my career in education as a teacher, doing tons of professional development on the side, and then moved into a teach coach role. I was very burned out from a decade in the school system and exhausted from a job that required being “on” all day, so I made a career pivot.

I’ve spent the last few years in corporate learning. I’m good at it and have gotten promoted, but I’ve realized that sitting at a desk all day isn’t for me. Sometimes I teach adult training classes, but that’s only a few times per month.

I am ready to make my next move and am stuck figuring out what to do. I know I could stay in corporate learning and probably make more money at a larger company, but the idea of doing what I do now doesn’t appeal to me. I also definitely don’t want to go back to working in a school building.

I am trying to figure out what jobs are out there that could utilize my skills, but where I spend more of my day doing than sitting. I don’t want the exhaustion of teaching all day every day, but do want to be doing more than sitting behind a desk as my typical day.

Aside from asking AI, how do I figure out my next move? I’m feeling stuck and appreciate any support!

Shampoo help needed- color treated hair with itchy scalp

I just got my hair color treated for the first time. I have always used Head and Shoulders Itchy Scalp shampoo and conditioner, but I know I need to make a change now that my hair is color treated. I do wash my hair daily (I’ve tried hair training for years and it just gets too gross to skip a day) so it’s very important to me I don’t destroy my color.

Does anyone have recommendations for a shampoo and conditioner for my color treated hair that could also be good for (or not worsen) my itchy scalp?
