Problem: Grammar Checking Dictated Text (looking for FOSS)

So, I'm visually impaired and I dictate a lot of text using FluidVoice. However, occasionally, that text is not grammatically correct--well not exactly. I'd like a free and open source tool that can help me do that. Most of the paid tools are, frankly, too expensive for what they do. And I know there are some options out there. So if any of you could provide any direction or discussion, I would really appreciate it.

Grammar Checking Dictated Text

So, I'm visually impaired and I dictate a lot of text using FluidVoice. However, occasionally, that text is not grammatically correct--well not completely. My grammar and usage is pretty good, but it's not perfect. I'd like a free and open source tool that can help me do that. Most of the paid tools are, frankly, too expensive for what they do. And I know there are some options out there. So if you could provide any direction or discussion, I would really appreciate it.

Verso Writer

Just a quick disclaimer: I’m a paid user and have no business or personal relationship with the developer.

I’m a writer and I really like Word processors. For decades I used Microsoft Word but frankly it’s just not worth it anymore. I also use LibreOffice, which is FOSS but honestly I have a software habit. I buy apps all the time either to solve imaginary problems in my head or simply to support the developers and some months ago. I purchased a copy of Versi Writer on a whim because I thought it had some interesting ideas.

It was interesting, but it just was not there yet. It is very close now. First of all the developer is extremely communicative and answers questions and emails very quickly. The main challenges are not composing new documents in this app, but issues with interoperability with .docx issues. The developer has found some interesting workarounds and elegant solutions, but I understand it is a pretty big undertaking. Composing a new document solves most of these issues but I primarily work in docx and odt files.

As a writer, I want three things from my word processor. I want organizational features, like styles and outlining similar to Word. I want compatibility with whatever forms my editor uses. Finally, I want a clean minimal interface that gets out of my way. Verso offers this and if you’re interested in a lightweight word processor without over-complication with a small footprint I believe it might be your solution.

It’s US$15 one-time license and available in the App Store.

By the way, he’s also developing a lightweight Excel clone called Nought.

edit Tomasz is also developing an app called Skein for notes.

The Incomparable Myrna Loy 1930s

First presented as an exotic playing a variety of ethnic parts in the 1930s, the amazing Myrna Loy would eventually be synonymous with Norah Charles from the Thin Man movies with William Powell.

LibreOffice Writer versus Mellel.

I’ve been using LibreOffice Writer for about two years and I really think it’s a fantastic option. I think it’s more featured than Pages, but I am running into some issues with longer documents.

Writer lacks document management features as well as outline features that can be important in longer documents. My issue is that it’s $100 for macOS and iOS combined.

Professional writers on this sub, do you feel that Mellel is worth the cost?

Any assistance or knowledge is welcomed.

TDFs Missed Opportunity

Over the last year I’ve switched to LibreOffice and ODF as my primary document format and the transition has been seamless, but for one thing. There is no iOS compatibility. All of the ODF editors have significant issues with formatting, graphical errors, and layout changes. Seeing all of these terrible vibe coded apps over the last year looking for a market I think that there’s a market for this product but no competitors. Collabora is a mess. it doesn’t even reliably format documents created in itself. Wouldn’t it be fantastic if TDF saw the millions of users that could be added to their base with a comprehensive iOS companion app.

My two cents… Thanx for reading.

Best New GM Primers

I have a friend who is returning to GM for the first time in years. I see articles on different specific games but what are the best overall GM primers you’ve read in the last few years?

ODF Reader & Editor

I use LibreOffice on my Mac and I’m very pleased with it. However there’s no iOS app. Collabora is hot garbage and Pages now requires a subscription. Also, Pages and Collabora both have styles and formatting issues which require I fix things when I get home. So what else is totally compatible?
