Has anyone arrived at Barajas from the US in the past few weeks?

I´ve only traveled to other Schengen zone countries, so I haven´t gone through customs from non-EU countries since they rolled out the new EES system. We are picking up friends there at the end of the month and wondering how much time to estimate for them to deplane and make it through customs and baggage.

Need some advice on van rentals and transfers

Hi all - could use some advice on the best way to go about picking up a rental van. We are a family group of 8 people flying into Geneva Airport. Originally I was thinking to pick up a rental passenger van at the airport, but the whole French side/Swiss side seems to be really confusing and I am getting a bit scared off by some of the reviews (especially rental companies on the Swiss side) which apparently are notorious for bogus damage charges.

Would it be easier and cheaper to take a bus (I saw there is something called a BlaBlaBus?) from the airport and just pick up a rental near the Annecy Train station? Then on the day of departure we can do the reverse?

Enterprise Rental (or other rental companies) on the French side of Geneva Airport?

Hi all,

My family and I are planning to fly into Geneva airport in August, pick up a rental car, and drive to Lake Annecy in France. From what I understand, we can pick up a car from either side, but there seems to be a LOT of complaints about car rental places on the Swiss side charging hundreds of euros for damage that was existing before the car was picked up. Enterprise rentals on the Swiss side especially seem to be notorious for this, but apparently the French side is separate and supposedly better?

Has anyone had a good experience with renting from Enterprise, on either side of Geneva airport? And, if we aren·t planning to drive at all on the Swiss side, does it matter what side of the airport we pick up a car from? Thank you for any advice! I am very confused about the best route here. We also need a van (we are 8 people) so we are somewhat limited.

Rug Editorial Review

Hi all, I couldn't find too many reviews for Rug Editorial, but saw some posts asking about them from a few months ago so I thought I'd post mine.

I waa getting pretty heavily influenced on IG and figured I'd give them a try for my new apartment. They arrived today and I pleasantly surprised. I needed two rugs for one large open living/ dining area, so I was looking for different rugs with a similar palette that could share the space and not look weird. I think these two work pretty well. I got the flat style for under the dining table and the thicker style for the living area.

Pros:

- The thicker style is VERY soft, almost fuzzy. A bit warm for summer so we will see how that goes. Certainly the dog likes it. :)

- I really love the colors, especially the dining area rug. The images online were pretty faithful.

- Shipping was fast (but I am in Madrid and I think the rugs come from Romania so not too far).

Cons:

- you can definitely tell these aren't handwoven or anything. My husband remarked that the larger living room one on particular looks like AI and he's not wrong. But, for the price, I'm not mad. It was a fraction of a handmade one for this size.

Overall I am quite pleased. We will see how they hold up over time.

Now to find a coffee table I don't hate!

Has anyone had to hire a company to pack up and store household furnishings?

I live out of state and currently rent out my home furnished, but the current tenants are moving out and it seems like any new prospects are mostly interested in unfurnished, so I may have to quickly clear out an entire house worth of stuff. Anyone have any recommendations for companies that can do this without me being there and an idea of costs?

US accepts only white refugees for sixth consecutive month

“Every single one of the 599 refugees the US admitted last month was a white South African, according to data the State Department’s Bureau of Population released Friday. In fact, so was every other refugee admitted this year. Since October 1, 2025, the US has accepted 6,668 refugees. Of those, 6,665 were white South Africans. Three—admitted last November—were from Afghanistan. No other refugees were admitted.”

They aren’t hiding the white supremacy at all.

First time visitors, multigenerational family visit

Bonjour tous!

We are planning a family gathering in Lake Annecy this August and would love some advice!

- Airports: some of us are coming from Madrid and the rest from the US. Should we look at flying into Lyon or Geneva or does it matter?

- There will be 10 of us ranging from teenagers to seniors 80+ years old. We are looking at a house rental on the west side of the lake. Will we need to rent cars or can we get to Annecy village other ways? For instance, the younger folks can bike, but the seniors will not bike. Can they take a bus or water taxi?

- Grocery stores on the west side of the lake that we can walk to or will we need a car foe everything? How about for sightseeing like the castle, is that accessible by bus?

Thank you in advance!

Merci d'avance !

In Homeless Crisis, California ‘Is Waging a War on R.V.s’

“There is currently a two- to three-month wait to be assigned a case worker to help you get into a shelter,” he said. The people who are unable to move their vehicles are the poorest and most vulnerable. “A lot of these operations will force, like, 15 R.V.s to move. They know they’re not going to get all those R.V.s,” he said. “They’re doing it for the three or four that are left over.”

Can’t add fiber in app (Vodafone España)

I’ve been using Vodafone for my mobile phones for the past several months without issue. I am moving to a new apartment and want to add internet. According to the Vodafone site I should do this through the app using my mobile phone account. I’ve been trying to do this for the past hour, but each time I try I get an error message asking me to try again later. Sometimes I get as far as the different ofertas, but as soon as I as I select one, it errors again. Any tips?

One of the things that bugged me about the gubernatorial debates (maybe you too) is how little time was given to each topic. Healthcare got short shrift but given how much we all spend on it, it deserves more attention.

Both Steyer and Porter said they are in favor of California having a single-payer healthcare system, while the others (Democrats and GOP candidates alike) seemed focused on how expensive it would be and how California can’t afford it.

Only Steyer said it would actually be significantly cheaper, and that sentence was easily missed if you weren’t listening to it. Steyer is absolutely right. Everyone else is so focused on who would pay for this healthcare that they weren’t talking about why it is so expensive in the first place. And it’s because we don’t have single payer, and because our entire healthcare system from provider to pharmacy to insurance, is owned by for- profit companies, that it is so outrageously expensive.

It does not need to be this way! Mexico’s Sheinbaum just announced that Mexico will move to single payer. Many EU countries, like Spain, have excellent healthcare for a fraction of the price (i have personal experience with this, feel free to ask me about it!.)

I hope people don’t discount the idea out of hand but give it some serious thought. If any state can move to single-payer, it’s California.
