Norway Is Restricting AI in Schools for Younger Students
While many countries are introducing AI into classrooms, Norway is taking a more cautious approach. Beginning with the new school year, students aged 6 to 13 will generally not have access to generative AI during class. Students aged 14 to 16 can use AI only under teacher supervision, while older students will be taught how to use the technology responsibly as preparation for higher education and the workplace.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said the priority is ensuring children first build strong foundations in reading, writing and mathematics, following concerns over declining academic performance. The decision follows Norway's 2024 smartphone ban in schools and comes alongside plans to restrict social media access for children under 16.
Do you think this is the right approach or should students be learning with AI from an earlier age???
