Big regulatory update for anyone living in India: The Union Ministry of Health has officially amended the Drugs Rules, completely removing "Syrups" from the over-the-counter (OTC) exemption list (Schedule K).

This means retail pharmacies are now legally barred from selling any liquid oral formulation including standard cough syrups (Benadryl, Ascoril), pediatric paracetamol liquids, and even popular Ayurvedic syrups (Honitus, Koflet) without a stamped prescription from a registered doctor.

The blanket ban comes after a series of tragic, fatal incidents involving children who suffered acute kidney failure from syrups contaminated with toxic industrial solvents (DEG and EG). The government is also using this to crack down on widespread self-medication and codeine abuse. Non-liquid alternatives like cough lozenges, pills, and tablets are still available OTC.
