How to improve, is it the eyes?

No references used, but art from artists I’ve done studies on recently added below.

Hi! I’m stuck on how to fix this drawing. I’ve been doing a lot of style studies lately of artists I like because I don’t like my style and have hit a road block here. Is there anything super obvious that needs fixing? Anatomy, lighting, values, etc. I’ve included the piece I’m talking about and two pieces from two artists I’ve done recent style studies on, just in case anyone can also point out anything really obvious I’m fumbling there. I’ve mostly been trying to learn from their use of lighting and shape language.

What kind of comics/stories make you interested in someone’s oc?

Hello! I have an oc that I’d like to promote more on my art insta and naturally I figured making short comics on her and giving her a bit of a story would endear people to her.

I was wondering if there’s any specific stories that garner more interest in general? Like do you prefer long and in depth stories with a narrative? Maybe short funny stories that she acts as a mascot for? What kind of thing would make you genuinely care about a character the same way you would a character in official media or a large ip?

Any and all thoughts are appreciated! I wanna get this right.

Edit: I already have one short comic posted of her already. I don’t fancy promoting for the sake of it on Reddit of all places (I like to keep most of my social media’s separate from my professional art acc) but you’re interested of course I’ll dm you the link :)

[Discussion] What matters more to you when buying from an artist?

I recently started an art instagram to hopefully soon accept commissions. Before I do I wanted to optimise by making sure I was creating art people would want. I posted a poll on my story but no one really answer so I thought I’d ask Reddit.

What would hold you back more from buying from an artist out of these three? If you can rank them and maybe explain why too that’d be great.

1, Their artwork not being your style.
2, Not enough evidence of what kind of art they make (all over the place feed, different styles, wildly different fandoms, etc).
3, Not enough evidence of what a finished commission piece would look like (different subjects in wildly different environments, different mood for every drawing, different target demographics, etc).

Bear in mind this is before I’ve posted a commissions sheet. I’d like to target these issues before that so I can build an audience that’ll actually want to buy from me.

Thank you so much for your help :)

Carousel not showing up on reels, help?

Hi! I made a short comic and posted it on instagram as a carousel for each panel. I added music too. For some reason it’s not showing up at all on reels. In the end I had to make a new post as a reel but it’s obviously not as good since it’s just a video, instead of having the interaction of scrolling.

It’s really irritating me that I’m losing out on views and reach because of this. Is there any way someone could help me figure out why the carousel isn’t posting on reels? Thanks so much.

Making a top hat for plushie but the edges of circular top ended up ruffled. I want to have straight edges to sides of the hat but they keep ruffling, is there a way I can straighten out the edge of the circle so I don’t have to start again?

I’m making a small top hat for a plushie and have started with the top and am working my way down to the brim. I’ve made the top shown here but as you can see the edges ended up a tiny bit ruffled (I think it’s because I made it quite big so it’s naturally started ruffling because of how many increases in using each round).

Anyway I of course plan on working down the sides next but when I started it immediately made a wavy, ruffled edge. For it to look like a top hat I need the dyes to be perfectly straight. Is there a way I can still achieve this without starting all over again (I’ve already lined the inside for structure and really don’t want to start again ahaha)

Thank you for your help!

How to change my style (from someone who hates digital painting)

Hi! I’ve been drawing digitally for a couple years now and am still lacking in skill when it comes to things like colour and value (coming from someone who’s art background is almost entirely black and white pencil sketching). I wanted some help trying to get closer to styles I love and want to emulate/learn from.

I actually despise how digital pens work sometimes so any advice on how to fix that would be great too! I hate how they always feel so artificial and the pressure sensitivity affects both size and opacity at the same time (in traditional I’m used to being able to control the size on a stroke with pressure and the thickness by the amount of paint I use.) See the corner of my pieces eye as an example. I can’t for the life of me figure out how to practice this.

The first piece is mine and the next two are artists I like. Any advice would be amazing. Even the most basic of things like ‘youre using the wrong kind of brush’ would help sm. Just as long as you have some advice on what to do instead.

Thank you!

How to improve background art?

These are the two latest pieces I’ve done with a background. They look really messy and lifeless to me and idk how to fix them or what to work on so I can improve. I’d love some thoughts.

I didn’t use a reference. My inspiration is mostly artists I follow online or have on an inspiration board on my Pinterest.

Need someone to sensitivity check an aspect of my fits plot

Hello, I have a superhero au fic that I'm just doing some final edits for the first chapter before I publish. I'm just writing this scene atm that annoys the mc enough to start a fight with someone else, where a work colleague starts complaining about how they're worried superpowers is contagious and how it goes against everything they believe in. I'm aware this sounds very close to what I've heard some ah say about lgbt and other minorities. My issue is I've planned the whole fic as the plot twist is that these superpowers actually are contagious by looking into another's eyes.

I'm probably thinking to much into it but I try to write really nuanced stories for some of my fics and so people might look far enough into it to see how icky that take away is. Should I change the scene so he gets mad about something else (I don't want to though cuz god I've working on this forever lol) or is it okay?

Hi, I’m writing a fight scene atm and there’s 4 characters on the protagonists side (so 5 including him) that are all skilled fighters. For the sake of the scene I need them to lose and I need all 5 of them there when they do so I can’t cut anyone.
How would you make them lose realistically? I’ve tried my best but I think I could try a little harder to make it look more like a series of mishaps mistake and less like a completely out of character loss.

Are there any tips or tricks I could use? I’m happy to answer any specific questions in comments (just didn’t wanna make the post way too long).

Edit: I should’ve specified lol but while I’ve tried to make up for it by their being a lot of npcs in the way they are only fighting one person.

Hi I posted this in one other subreddit but wanted to try one more just for a different sample of answers before moving on and deciding.
I’m writing a fantasy book atm and wanted to name a character the way the word Bison makes me feel. Yes the animal, so strong, fierce, herd, protective, athletic, etc. I tried to find a name that fit the same way for me and ended up deciding Bison was the best choice.

Critique would be wonderful on this. Is this a name that’d snap you out of the book or make you dislike the character/never take him seriously? Thank you sm.

Very early on in my hip for a fantasy project and wanted to name one of the secondary male characters a name that sounds like the word 'Bison.' Not necessarily the way it sounds, but the way the word makes me feel. In the end I couldn't come up with a name that sounded good enough to me and decided to stick with the name Bison.

I was wondering if fantasy readers would be snapped out of the story if they saw this. Do you guys think Bison is a good name for a character and what kind of guy do you think of? I'd hate for his name to be considered too ridiculous to be taken seriously. Thank you!
