sauna, beer and casual strolling for 10h layover. not first time. any suggestion?

Hi there.

I'll by layover in HEL for 10h tomorrow (this joke never get old). I was thinking to comes to the city center, casually strolling around.

It's not my first time in Helsinki, so I'm not much interested into tourist attracion, although some amazing architecture are worth to see twice, so I might pop up to the concert hall.

any good suggestion?

I'd like to see a sauna, which I think I'll need after 12h flight. I won't have any swimsuit nor towel (maaaaaybe I can get flip flop, but I'd rather not take space in the hand language for that). Any one who can rent the set?

What is the most unmissable food I can get for lunch?

Maybe I'll pop up a design store or something. Any suggestion?

I'd love to get to a pub for Finnish metal, but I'm afraid my time in HEL is from 5am to 2pm, so... no much of that I guess.

thanks!

Sonoff mini duo can be configured without load, just to make a dumb switch iot?

As per title:
If I plug a mini duo “the normal way”, in HA i can see if the switch is been pressed or not.

This can have another use: if I take a dump switch, get a mini duo behind, then it will get the info (and then comand something else, such as scene)

But:
If I unplug the L1 circuit, it became incomplete, and not work.

Should I connect direcly L1 to N?

Sonoff MINI-ZBDIM - any alternative for 100v?

I'm looking to find a Dimmer zigbee switch. I'd love to buy sonoff (link here), as I used them before, but what stop me is the big red sign
"Note: 220–240V only. Do not exceed or go below voltage limits."

As super beginner I have a stupid question: this refers to the input V or the output?

my project is in Japan, where power runs at 100v like US.

Is there any valid alternative to do the job?

"the job" is that I want to connect to HA a dimmer LED strip and lights, but keeping at least one button on the wall for daily use.

Thanks!

How can I find a internet provider in the countryside?

Hello again.

my curse of slow internet is still a plague to me. I'm trying to figure out how to get internet in a countryside house and I'm constantly failing.

I've tried the major companies, but all said "there is no service there".
I spoke with lovely granny next door, which she gave me a note with the name of her... router.
I then spoke with the daikusan who installed it, and said that is J-com.

J-com said that there is no service.
I can see NTT boxes on the pole, but they said there is no service.
internet trough a 5G is out of the question: the only mobile provider that get signal is DOCOMO, and very very badly.
I'd like to have a decent connection, so satellite is my dead last option.

I'm at a loss. people nearby clearly have internet, but all companies I contact said they can't supply the line there.

What should I do next?

thanks in advance.

Is it feasible to work remotely for occasional contract?

Hi fellow architects.

I reached a point in my career where either I open my studio and find my own clients (ahahahah!) or... get some occasional jobs.

I'm currently following a construction site that makes me busy 2-3 days a week max, and while the good amount of free time was amazing at the beginning, I start to feel the toll of having nothing to do.

So... I start wondering, is it that hard to find occasional jobs to round up? drafting and such?
A quick research on the major websites shown and incredible number of remote jobs for [IT architect] and a staggering amount of zero for [construction architect].

The main reason for remote job is that I still need to go on site, in the Japanese countryside, but I'm free otherwise. I worked in the past remotely for UK companies, proving that it can be done, but I'm afraid the trend is long gone.

any suggestions?

my first ever fish farm. go. roast me.

as title. first time doing a fish farm.

So, if I get the core mechanics is.. egg get extract, if place is available, drop the egg back in, otherwise release them somewhere else.

I saw some people using pokeshell to do the dirty business, but so far I've been placing all of them in a corner. The map really have many of them, so now the chance there is en egg in there is... high. I'm now very scared to get closed to the pit of death, but eventually I can get the 2 things to work together.

sooooo before touching the pit of death, I think I'll just release the fish back in the big pond. After 10 cycle they will die of starvation, if I'm not wrong.

ah, the reason I'm doing the egg drop in the dry is cause I want to keep that passage clear for now. I think I'll lower the water of one cell in due time. for now I'm just testing.

Any suggestions on where to ride/practice in North Kyoto?

Hi there!
I’m a little experienced driver just moved to Kyoto. I’m currently using a rental 125 as a commute, since I’ll be staying few months here. In the meantime, I’m looking to take some daily rental to test out few different bikes, before eventually get one.

My wanted bike is the Suzuki vstorm 250, but very undecided between sx or not

Also, it looks quite heavy, while I really like lightweight bikes.

Long story short, I’m looking for destinations! Objectives! A place to go so I have a chance to test bikes! (And justify to my wife I absolutely have to go there!)

help with automation: I want to make a 2 stage chamber for cooling

the idea is pretty simple: cool down the salt water before releasing.

My plan is to replenish the ocean which is getting smaller and smaller as I dig down (and I haven't figure out yet a decent way to prevent that).

so, the idea is: then temperature goes below 30'C, open the bottom door, flush the liquid, and after a short wait, close the doors and open the one above. This is to prevent the aquatuner to deal with an impossible task (I had bad experience in the past of just having an aqua to cool a large body of water...).

(please note the manual switch is temporary, only to calibrate the system)

the problem I have is that.. once it hit target temperature, the sensor goes green and keep the door open. I thought of putting a memory toogle, but it immediately overwritten by the sensor, which is still green.

any idea how to solve it?

thanks!

EDIT: apparently this feature is only on the DLC planetoid, otehr planetoid still have the old pattern background

I just linked a button in MQTT, and it automatically trigger another device without automation. How to stop it?

I'm in the process of moving my devices from ZHA to MQTT.
I've just added a styrbar button (which gave me endless trouble so far). recognized and... suddently it is automatically binded to another device. the garden water valve!!!
(you can imagine my surprise when I test a button to see the device activity and suddently watering the plants!)

How to stop this?

I think it happen twice already, the button for the curtains now control the curtains without any automation (small damage, that its intended way to work).

But for the garden... oh no!

how to migrate to Zigbee2MQTT? just got a new dongle.

Hi There.

super-hobbist-DIY-beginner here. I'm doing this as hobby and (beside asking why I'm doing it) often hit a wall with "obvious" problems.

Now. IKEA recently moved from zigbee to matter. I got a new device to test out, and.. turn out I need a new dongle.

While most of my devices are setup on zigbee, many suggest to get into Zigbee2MQTT. and I realized that I need... well... a new dongle.

Solution: get the Sonoff Dongle max which, on paper, can run both.

I just got it and.. hit a wall. the multiconnection is "beta" in the options, and I really struggle to make it work.

I'm so close to flash everything outside the window (pun intended), but here is the question:

Is there an easy way to move devices from 'normal zigbee' to Zigbee2MQTT?

If the only way to do it is "re=install" them as Zigbee2MQTT, then what I'm doing is technically correct: get a new dongle, and one by one move from old zigbee to new Zigbee2MQTT. is this correct?

for the matter issue... as I only have one ikea button, I will test, see if I like, then decide what will happen to it later.

Hydrangea help

Hi gardeners!

I bought an old house, which was abandoned for few years. The agent then cleaned up before selling.

This huge hydrangea was left alone, and given the shape, I think growing over something else.
Last autumn I cut a little the top, and finally this spring has started sprouting at the base!

Do you have any advice on how to deal with? My plan is to get it back to a “normal” hydrangea size

Help me save my little balcony for the next weeks.

Hi there! Just found this sub!

here is my little balcony. As you can see from the dead and stressed plant, I'm really really bad at keeping plants.

I only recently found a decent balance of watering (Hydrangea on the foreground is recoverying after being in my care, one Ginko dead few weeks ago, the other seems doing fine, potato seems ok), but... I'll soon leave tokyo for several weeks leaving the plants to my wife care (If I'm bad a gardening, she totally ignores it. "it's your plant, you have to take care of them" kind of treatment).

So, I bought a Sonoff water valve that I can automatize. My long term plan is to put a humidity sensor that tells it when to water it. But for now, I have a trouble: the hydrangea really like water everyday, everyone else just every few days. and the heat is coming. (balcony is facing east, so it get really hot in the morning).

Any suggestion?

why my pipes leaked?

This is a new one. I have 2 cooling loop in this chamber, and I noticed one keep getting the pipe emptied.
I now noticed a lot of dirt of the floor, hinting that... water could be boiling in there?

The loop looks correct to me. and yet... something is happening.

Any idea? what am I missing?

and... as I was writing this post, it happened! I caught one live. a spill from the pipe, dropping there. in second will flush and we know there rest.

First time I see this, after million of cooling loop done. any idea?

EDIT: Found it. it was mistakely connect to the dripping pipe above. I didn't notice sooner as only occasionally the pwater was going there, namely, when hte turbines were not working.

Thanks everyone!

sonoff MINI DUO test: why the switch works that way?

Hi there!

I'm a very beginner, who is sperimenting into HA. I recently found the Sonoff Mini Duo, and test how it could work to make IoT my old house.

Here is a video of my test
here is the original diagram

The things I don't understand is why the manual switch works that way. I can turn it on, and nothing happens, but then when I press off again, it send the signal to the light.
In the same fashion, to turn the light off, I need to press the switch twice.
Basically the fisical switch is like a "push button".

Not sure if it's cause I bought the wrong switch, or that is the correct operation. if that the case, I should get "push button" for everything instead?

Not sure if affect, but the lightbulb is a smart light, cause I didn't have any other spare around, but in theory this should work with normal light bulbs (right....?)

let me know!
thanks
