Different…?

Different…?

All these are supposedly Tillandsia Ionantha. However, the top one looks different to me…fewer, looser leaves, more open growth habit, lighter in color.

Is this a normal species variation or is it in fact another species?

Looking at Herself in the Mirror…

We have company and I had to move some plants around.

Problem with pups…

One of my tillandsia Ionanthas bloomed a few months back. Since then she has produced two pups, but both rotted when they were still minuscule—like grain of rice size. The mother plant looks fine.

Now a third pup is coming…it’s also super tiny, but I’m concerned it will go the way of the first two. Any tips to keep it healthy?

Is All Lost…?

Once again, I decided to perform an experiment and separate a tillandsia Ionantha pup, which had grown larger than the mother, from the mother plant.

The pup came away with no issues, but sadly, the mother plant instantly went to pieces, leaving nothing but a tiny core of intact leaves.

Can she recover, or is this a sign that her time was done?

Rex Tour 2026 (pt 2)

These begonias are all grown from leaf cuttings, and they live throughout my house in natural light and ambient home humidity (between 30-60%, depending on the season.)

  1. Black Mamba (lives in front of shaded west window)

  2. Zumba (lives in front of a NE window in an arrangement with other plants)

  3. Jive (lives in front of a NE window in an arrangement with other plants)

  4. Soli Mutata (currently in “begonia nursery” because I gave the mother plant to a friend)

Rex Tour 2026 (pt 1)

I haven’t shared a “tour” of my collection in a while, so I thought I’d update.

These begonias are all grown from leaf cuttings, and they live throughout my house in natural light and ambient home humidity (between 30-60%, depending on the season.)

  1. Bewitched Lavender (lives about two meters from a West window)

  2. Fedor (lives in front of East window)

  3. Indian Summer (lives in front of East window)

ID?

I posted my aloe here before, and was told I’d get a better chance at positive ID if it was blooming.

Well, now it’s blooming…so what do you all think it is?

New Growth…

My orchid that’s really been struggling, down to just a couple of healthy leaves, is putting out a new one. I think there’s hope!

Happy Porch Calla

Callas are underrated, I think…easy to grow from corms and so lush and beautiful, even when they’re not blooming.

One Year’s Growth

Well, I suppose it’s a year and a bit…I took these cuttings off my mother plant last May and they’ve done very well since then!

Love this Color!

I’ve grown 4 o’Clocks for years, but never had any this wonderful coral color. The photo doesn’t really capture it…

More Shade

It’s looking a lot better after a week or so in a shadier location. This plant specifically seems to be extra sensitive to sun…however, for some reason, the daughter plant (from cuttings) isn’t nearly so much.

Front Porch Garden

We moved to a house with a great front porch a few years back, and since then I’ve been working on building my dream garden—a tropical one. If anyone wants tips/ideas for a tiny tropical garden in a temperate zone, I’m happy to advise!

Here’s what it looks like this year…

Unpopular Opinions…

Here’s my (I think) unpopular/unusual begonia opinion—I like Rex begonias better than canes, and I think they’re easier to care for, especially to keep them looking nice…what do you all think?

One Year’s Growth

I bought this teeny little Gollum Jade at ALDI last June. It’s almost exactly a year later, and she’s really grown up since then!

First Bonsai

First time posting—I wanted to share some of my tropical bonsai.

They are both about five years old, and have been in “bonsai” training for about two years. I’m especially pleased with how small the croton leaves have become.

Squirrel Damage

So my amaryllis got attacked by (I think) a squirrel the other day. The injuries seem pretty superficial, so I’m hoping they won’t have any long-lasting bad effects on the plant. I dusted the fresh wounds with cinnamon to repel fungi, but is there anything else I should do/look for?
