Do you know a Piano Tuner??

Saw some earlier posts on this with no response. I find it impossible in a city saturated with Chinese (I am one - new to the city) no one has a trustworthy piano tuner lol. If you know one, please drop them below! I can go to Google, but ya never know.

Legit Mexican food in Vancouver?

Context: I’m born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona and just moved here recently.

My qualifications: I’m chubby, mostly from Filiberto and his cousins.

For me to trust you: From AZ, SoCal, I guess NM or TX but I’ll be suspicious, or, of course, are or are married to Mexican. I’m sure there are a few more I can trust. Obviously mostly joking lol. Or am I.

Are there any legitimate dirty Mexican restaurants around Vancouver area? Like not fancy sit down mexican- burrito and carne asada fries with some horchata and a churro. Like roach coach type food.

Preferably closer to van west, but if I have to drive, I’ll drive.

Is there ANY good time to cross the bridge? - new to van

New to the area in Vancouver west and the one time I crossed the Lion’s Gate bridge to North Van on a Saturday afternoon, it was a disaster. I’ve heard the stories, but is there ANY good day/time to go to North Van where the bridge isn’t awful?

Like mid morning weekdays after everyone’s at work?
Sunday morning?

Do I need 21 gears or is 7 gears enough in Vancouver?

My family (me, wife, kids) just moved to Vancouver and we come from the desert so we never really cared about the gears... it was flat everywhere we went and we're not avid cyclists, just rode to the park and stuff.

Here in Vancouver, we live near Kerrisdale (41st and Arbutus) and plan on biking a lot around town... down Arbutus Greenway, maybe to Stanley park if we can get that far.

More specifically, my wife will be biking from our home to VGH, where she works, which is downhill from us, but uphill on the way home.

My question because I'm looking on Marketplace for some used bikes... some commuters, hybrids, etc... and seeing some that are 7 gears instead of 21 or 24. Can we get by with only 7 if we happened to find a cheap one built that way or would it be significantly easier to have 21?

If we're going from Kits beach going South to our home... would it be completely impossible to climb that uphill or do people just walk that part with their bikes anyway?

Thank you!

Paint coming off- is this normal?

Got my car back from a Honda service center today and this was 100% not here before. I asked them about it and they said “This is pretty common on cars with the white paint” and basically told me that it must have come off while they were washing it or something, but that the paint is coming off of the primer (bubbling is the word he used).

So basically… not their fault, it’s just something that happens to their cars with white paint.

He also specifically pointed out the “greenish” primer behind it, proving his point.

Can any one confirm or deny this?

Car background if it helps/matters: 2017 Honda Odyssey from Phoenix, AZ… kept in a garage most of the time. Infrequent commercial car washes (maybe 5-6 a year if that).

Temporary Work Permit - do I need an itemized list of goods I'm bringing with me at the border?

We're moving to Vancouver with work permits, which we have in hand. Everything online has told us that we need to fill out the itemized list to give at the border and we actually filled it out... but when we got there the first time to get our work permits, the agent there specifically saw our list and said "You don't need that".

But now we're heading to the border again with all of our things and I'm thinking "What if that guy was wrong? Because everything I find online says I still need that list"

Who's right here?

Tap water quality in an older home

I’ve read that Vancouver water is very clean and great to drink however, the home we’re renting is 1940s in Quilchena.

Should I have any concern with the old pipes as far as drinkability of the tap water for that reason? Or nah?

US to YVR School Question: What grade did your kids go into?

We're moving to Vancouver soon and we have 4 kids. We're coming from Arizona where our kids would currently be going into 6th, 3rd, 1st, and preschool because of their birth dates (August 31 cutoff)

However, according to VSB schools, our kids being born in the years 14, 17, 20, and 21, they would start VSB next year in 7th, 4th, 1st, and Kinder.

My concern is that they may be behind in the grade levels (because of the obvious "skipping" a grade, but honestly, because Arizona education is atrocious).

Has anyone navigated this before and what has been your experience?

If anyone is a TEACHER or in the education system in Vancouver, would also love to hear your thoughts!

If you had One Day in Twin Falls... (with kids)

Hey! Passing through next week with our kids (4-11) and we're gonna spend one extra day there. If you had one day to see or do anything in Twin Falls, what would you do?

I'm assuming see the falls? haha

Also any restaurants in town to recommend with gluten-free options?

Thank you!

Best bank for Cross-Border (CAN/US) banking?

We're moving to Vancouver from the states - my wife will be working here, but I'll be running my Real estate business in the states still so we need to find a good cross-border bank that would allow us to transfer money easily and without fees.

RBC is the one I've found, but 1) Do you have any experience with others and 2) If you use RBC for this, what's been your experience?

Thank you!

Trying to Find a girls 12u Club Volleyball program

Hi! New to the country and area, but my daughter plays volleyball. She's 11 - will be 12 when next season starts. She's been playing for about a year, not on a club team yet. Trying to find a club for her that has a good program for getting her club-ready or if there are non-club programs that are good, would love to know!

ALSO we'll be in Quilchena... would love to find something semi-close. I've seen some clubs in North Van, but have also heard it's a pain to go across the bridge from locals?

Thank you!

Internet provider in Shaughnessy/Quilchena area?

Hey! Tried to search and didn’t find anything specific. Found lots of people talking about Novus, but seems like that’s only in large buildings.

We’re renting a house in Quilchena- any specific internet providers that are maybe better in that area?

Takami’s EAN40C - can I somehow protect this?

My wife and I used my guitar as a wedding book for everyone to sign. This guitar is not lacquered, but now I’m realizing I can’t play it whatsoever because I’m a sweaty man.

Is there any way to protect this without fully changing the sound of the guitar? I thought (as someone who does not know anything) about scotch guarding or something light. Would that straight up ruin the guitar?

I’m an idiot. Be kind. lol

What's the parent involvement culture of Vancouver public schools?

We're moving into Vancouver proper this summer from the states. The school we had our kids at here, we were heavily involved our kids' classrooms as parents - being a classroom parent (I helped our teachers communicate with all of the other parents in the classroom), volunteering in the classroom, planning events and trips, etc.

Does this exist in Vancouver in the public schools? Are parents more involved or more hands-off? Does it vary widely by school, I guess?

What's the deal with expensive houses being rented for very cheap?

For context: I'm moving to Vancouver and been researching areas/housing/rentals for a few months. My cousin, who lives in Vancouver, had told me that there are some people who own expensive houses and rent it out for cheap because of the vacancy tax they don't want to be hit with. I have done no research into that.

Now: I'm looking at a house for rent under $5000, but the house is apparently worth over 6 million. That seems insane to me. I'm coming from Phoenix and a 6 million dollar house would rent for like 25,000 or more easily. The home is being rented out by a reputable real estate brokerage so I'm pretty positive it's not a scam.

Question: Is it true that some owners are just renting it out to not pay the vacancy tax and if so, why in the world are they renting it for so cheap?

UPDATE: Unless I'm missing something else - Empty Homes Tax = 3% of assessed value so a 6mill home would get a tax of 180,000 every year if it sits empty. Someone who owns a 6mill house and doesn't live in it probably doesn't care about the difference between $60k in rent and $120k in rent as long as it's preventing them from having a $180k tax bill. So renting it out for cheaper guarantees it isn't vacant and (this part is my opinion as a a RE investor myself) - if you get a tenant who feels like they got a steal and wants to stay there because there's nothing else better at that price point... they're more likely to take better care of the home and maybe even complain less if something goes wrong.

Moving from US: How long to get meds?

Moving to Vancouver from the states and we’ll be purchasing the gap insurance. I have blood pressure meds I take, but wondering how long it may take to get in to see a physician to get a prescription. I’ve heard about long wait times for non-emergency needs but not sure what the reality is. Thanks ahead of time!

Are there more Single Family Home Rentals out there??

We are moving to Vancouver from the states so this is all new to me for the area.

I've been checking Craigslist, FB Marketplace, Kijiji, Zillow, rentals.ca all for the past few months and it feels like there just aren't a lot of options out there? Like on CL, it's the same 5 rentals that are priced too high and keep renewing... and then maybe every other week, a new one will actually pop up.

My big question: Will more rentals pop up in June as the end of school comes up?

My Follow-up info: I AM being a bit picky (for reasons) so I get that there might not be a lot that pops up specifically where I'm looking, but I thought there would be MORE than what I'm seeing, at least. My geographic parameters are between Granville and Main anywhere from VGH down to Marpole.

What am I missing here?

Keeping my US cell phone - is it possible?

We're moving to Vancouver this summer and we still have a year left on our cell phone contracts (got a "free" phone).

  1. If we cut the plans, we have to pay the balance on the phone ($700-$800 approximately)

  2. Our plans DO include US/CAN/MEX free roaming, but limited data usage outside the US - this would be rough since I'm out and about a lot so this may be a dealbreaker for us anyway.

  3. I've heard of others keeping their cell phones after moving from the US, but mixed-bag on how it went... most say that their US cell providers never knew or said anything even though technically they COULD cancel the contract.

  4. If we DO choose to change over to a Canadian provider, are there any that would pay off our phone to switch over? My guess is that would typically be reserved for switching from a competitor within Canada, not from the US, but worth a shot?

Looking for recommendations for small companies that do paver install.

My scope:

Remove driveway, install pavers, install real grass with some irrigation work.

I had a guy who’s done a lot of work for me and recently finished a project at roughly $8/sq ft for the pavers… but he’s now ghosted me.
