Thunder in the Wasatch

Here is Amtrak #6. The California Zephyr Is on Southern Pacific rails. It is fronted by two General Electric B32-8WH units. These are engines 516 and 511. This train is over 9 hours tardy.

The CZ slows to a stop in Helper, Utah. Locomotives were nicknamed as 'Pepsi Cans' due to obvious paint scheme similarities, with the soda cans at the time. The SP became part of Union Pacific. Originally, former Rio Grande trackage. Circa 1995.

Frisco 1522 is a part of Burlington Northern Santa Fe here. Steam engine 1522 is a Mountain type 4-8-2 steam locomotive. Runs with diesel BNSF 684, a C44-9W. This was Employee Appreciation Specials in 2001. Good action on a Houston to Beaumont trip. Travels on Union Pacific Sunset Route trackage. Pentrex.

Baltimore & Ohio Steam "In Twilight - Over Sand Patch"

Action on the summit of Baltimore and Pittsburgh Sand Patch line. Engine 7614 is an EM-1 “Yellowstone”. The wheel arrangement is 2-8-8-4. It is hauling a Mineral Train past SA Tower. This tower had control of rail traffic at Sand Patch Tunnel. The EM-1 was the largest and heaviest steam locomotive operating on the Baltimore and Ohio. It could exceed over 6000 horsepower. Compare it to a four unit Electro-motive F7 diesel set replacement. The railroad had 30 of these big steamers. None were preserved. Circa 1956. Ed Birch movie film.

Milwaukee Road Scrapbook

Action on the Avery, Idaho Milwaukee Road line before abandonment. These ancient Milwaukee Road boxcabs were the venerable Electric motors on the Milwaukee Road Pacific Extension. The better known Little Joe engines also operated under the catenary. Long gone but can still be seen in old movie films. Charles Smiley Presents.

Action at Centralia, Illinois on former Illinois Central rails. The Canadian National Southbound train is A408. Black paint on Illinois Central 1007 ( SD70 ) leads the locomotives. A Baltimore and Ohio EM-1 hauls this Railfan Excursion. The 2-8-8-4 (Yellowstone class) is on a 1956 fan trip. This film contains authentic audio recordings.
