If AIs become conscious, how will we know?
There’s endless talk about the possibility, but without any convincing consensus on what it means and what difference it would make. Consciousness is, it seems to me something experienced, not detected.

What’s a good word for a plastic drinking glass? I don’t want to call it a glass when it isn’t
Ever since my father died a few decades ago my greatest fear has been having to abandon m own life and becoming Mum’s full time career. She’s fought hide to maintain her independence but nature seems to have other ideas.
So here I am again sleeping in her flat and spending each day visiting her in hospital. Wondering when I can get home.
I’m not allowed resent this, of course
We people worry about AI reducing jobs but, lately, people are worrying about declining birth rates, and not just in the developed world.
Now declining population in many ways is clearly a good thing. Maybe humans will leave some resources for the other inhabitants of the planet. But there’s the problem of the demographic transition. Who will do the work with an aging population?
So, are robots and AI generally the answer to the demographic transition?
I tried Waze for about a year. The problem that made me abandon it was excessive power use. On a long trip my iPhone was getting so hot that it stopped charging and would shut down even when it was being charged by the car. The phone would get almost too hot to hold
With IOS apps battery management is crucial and Waze seemed to have the worst power control of all the apps I’ve used.
Otherwise I like the app, and might re-install if the battery management has been sorted. I’ve upgraded my phone since the last time I tried to use it.
The guy you’ve getting drunk with in a bar turns off his hologram when nobody else is looking and shows you he (or maybe it) is an alien. He says “I’m not here for long, but I want to play a prank on your lot before I leave. We’re not a particularly practical race, but we’re _way_ ahead of you technologically. What would be a good practical joke?”
