I feel understood for the first time
I went to a crisis clinic tonight, because I’ve been handling a break up VERY BADLY. I’ve never been to one. I was expecting to get resources to cope with all of what’s been happening to me. Before the clinic visit, I went to attempt to speak with my ex at his apartment, but I was dismissed and left. I was threatened with law enforcement (not directly, through a message from a friend), and had the friend tell me things my ex was saying. “He’s done with you” “there’s no chance of him coming back now” “you made everything worse” “he said if he sees you near his house he’ll have you trespassed and possibly a restraining order”. I hadn’t even done anything, and I was confused when I wanted to ask him for clarity (he broke up with me unexpectedly and completely shut me out)(we talked the day after the break up but I needed another clarifying conversation). I had a breakdown, and decided to take myself to a crisis center for help and someone to talk to. I don’t have many friends, I’m very isolated. Especially after my boyfriend leaves me on a Tuesday morning (IRONICALLY, he broke up with me because I seemed overly invested, overly attached in the relationship, I like him a lot and I can come off as obsessive. He has his own trauma with this, he’s scared, ptsd. I’m hoping for the best still)
The assessment begins and she asks me questions about the break up, I tell her what’s happened, my experience, how I’ve been handling it. I’m ruminating, I’m not adjusting to being without him well, I feel misunderstood, “too much”. I didn’t see it coming, because he was enamored with me. She asks me about my history with mental health, I also have severe ocd and ADHD. She asks about childhood, all of that, many questions. I have autism. The last thing I expected to walk out with was an autism diagnosis. I thanked her before I left, and told her she changed my life. She had acknowledged the consistent stress and depression I live in (with the already known ocd and adhd) and nothing ever worked to treat my ocd, and I hate talk therapy because it never did anything. She wanted to help because I was in distress in all aspects of my life (though the breakup is the most prominent) and had such low quality of life for 24 years old, I’ve never been told something like this before. I felt like she could see right through me. I mask incredibly well. I’ve never been more understood. I cried in my car after leaving, and once I got home, and now. I feel every part of me has been explained, I feel happy to know what’s going on with me. I feel more motivated to get help and have therapy because I had been discouraged by the many times I had tried and it never worked for me.
I didn’t leave with coping mechanisms and how to get this boyfriend madness handled. And that is going to suck because I don’t know what to do but all other aspects of my life have been changed
