Aero is Overrated (for crits)

Had a debate with a buddy about a new bike he was going to buy for crits. We were talking about the best crit bike and I said a Scott Addict RC is the best crit bike out there right now. Here’s my reasoning.

It’s got the best stiffness to weight ratio out there. It’s super light. It’s not an aero brick. And it can fit large tires.

For a crit, aero is less important than most other race disciplines. It’s more about positioning, tactics, bike handling, and just knowing how to read a race. So going for an all out aero bike is less important. Having a super light yet stiff bike will help with all the micro accelerations out of corners or responding to moves. With the stop/start nature of crits, that will be more important. And with how shitty the roads are, being able to run a fat tire is a huge benefit. A 32 tire on wide rims that inflates out to 35-36mm while keeping the smooth transition on a wide rim is the way to go.

Thoughts?

And before somebody suggests it, I’ll save you the time of typing out the most overused cliche phrase on here, “the best crit bike is the bike you can replace.” Cool, great advice. We can replace any bike. How original.

Edge 1050 - Di2 Control Glitch

So I’m having a little glitch using my Garmin Edge 1050 connected to my Shimano Di2 system. I’ve run the setup fine for a while, this has only started in the last month or so.

So normally, I have each top button on the shifter set up to change the pages on my Garmin. But now, when I press the button, my Garmin page slides as if it will change the page, but then flashes and refreshes to the same page. I can bypass if I double press the button. It’s almost as if the Garmin is getting a second signal halfway through. Like I press the right button to page right, and halfway through turning the page it gets a left button signal to page left. So I’m stuck on the same page. If I double press the right button, the first press gets canceled out by the phantom left, and the second signal goes through normally.

Any ideas? I’ve updated both. I reset the Garmin to factory settings.

State of Indoor Trainer Bikes

Im looking for an indoor trainer bike. I had the Wahoo Kickr Bike v1 like 5 years ago and liked it just fine. Sold it a while back and haven’t wanted to replace it, but some safety related stuff has me moving indoors.

Bikes I’ve found.

Wahoo Kickr Bike Pro

Wahoo Kickr Bike Shift

Zwift Ride

Elite Bike

Wattbike

I tried a Kickr Bike at my mate’s house and found it very uncomfortable. More so than I remember with the Kickr Bike. Which is why I was leaning to another one, but now I see they have different models. Also Elite released one but I haven’t seen many reviews.

Say no budget, which would you get?

[US] Yahoo Phone Scam - Do I need to do anything?

Little background. I had a Yahoo email address that I didn’t realize had an old phone number as backup. I tried to reset my password and couldn’t get the security code because the phone number is wrong. I’ve spoken with Yahoo customer service but in the end I wasn’t able to ever verify my identity enough for them to let me reset my password. I gave up on them.

Until today, I receive a call from 818, I answer and they say they’re from Yahoo Support and wanted to follow up with a support ticket I put in. Now silly me I believe them. They give me the email address that I’ve been trying to get into, and even give me the old phone number associated with it. So I thought it was legit. So I tell them I’ve been trying to reset my password. And they say sure, let’s update your phone number, which I’m talking on and they called me. But then they say, “can you confirm the last 4 of the phone number are xxxx?” The numbers are wrong. So I say, I don’t know what number that is. They then hang up. I redialed but it went to voicemail first, then the second time it says that number is disconnected. That’s when it hit me.

So my question is, do I’m need to follow up? I don’t even have access to that email. I wish I did but I’ve been trying for months. They have the old phone number and apparently my current phone number. So I’m concerned that they could do something with that. Could they get access to that old phone number and reopen my email address? Should I reach out to Yahoo again and let them know about the phishing scam or try to get access to my email again?

Chicago Grit in 3 weeks - is there anything that can benefit me until then?

Ok, so I’m a cat 2, mostly crits, but I haven’t raced in over two years. I’ve pretty much done nothing but Fondos and gravel since then. So my long endurance is amazing. But I got the bug again and want to race Chicago Grit.

My question is: is there anything I can do in the next 3 weeks to prepare myself or to gain anything? I figured maybe two things:

- heat training. Good old fashioned heat training. If nothing else to increase plasma volume. Is 2 weeks enough?

- sprint/anaerobic work. I used to have a pretty good kick around 1700W but I haven’t sprinted in ages. Would any sprint work help me? Or maybe do anaerobic repeats. I figure they could at least get my body used to those hard efforts over and over.

So, how screwed am I? Am I going to get dropped in the first 5 laps of every race?

Does ENVE sell their TT wheel setup to the general public?

The rules say it should be available to the public, but I’ve never actually seen a way to order these wheels. Even talked to a local dealer and they didn’t show up. Since USAC still doesn’t have a wheel depth limit, I’d love to get 2 for the front wheel depth rims for a custom build. Any ideas?

CAAD14 Team Dream - Custom Build

Somehow I managed to snag one of these frames. How would you guys build it up? More of a curiosity to hear how different people would pick components.

I got the Blue version. I was thinking about finding a place to make fully custom ENVE decals. Not just changing the color but maybe a different font to match the Team Dream logo. And maybe some lightning to match the frame.

White saddle and bar tape.

Not sure about groupset yet.

Solvent to clean Orange Seal?

I have some Reserve Fillmore valves and they’re generally great but they get clogged with dried sealant and don’t seal anymore.

What can I use to clean out the dried sealant? I’m using Orange Seal regular.

Chris King Headset Creaky AF

I just installed a Chris King Aeroset 3 for ENVE stems and this thing is so creaky. I greased the inside of the frame and cups before pressing. No issues with installation. I’ve tried 2Nm preload as per the manual, but it’s insanely loud. I tried tighter which helped the sound, but it’s still creaky with every out of saddle effort. Any ideas?

I bought the Chris King Aeroset 3 as shown (not my bike) and can’t believe the gap between the lower bearing and fork. Looks to be caused mostly by the crown race being very thick. Purely for aesthetic reasons I want to replace the crown race with something lower profile. Any crown race with a 45 degree contact angle should work right? Or does anybody have other ideas?

Edit: Related question, what are the specs of the lower bearing? Cannot find it anywhere. Even on the Chris King website they give the specs for the Aeroset 1 & 2 but not the Aeroset 3 for some reason.

Looking to buy the Serk A40 allroad bike. I’ve spent the time and fully decided on this frame. My only problem is sizing. I keep going back and forth between a L and XL.

I’m 188cm tall, 92cm inseam. Long legs, average arm length. I normally ride size 58. I’ve ridden a Crux 58, Tarmac 58, Aluto 58. All have been great. Geo comparison below.

https://geometrygeeks.bike/compare/specalized-crux-2025-58,factor-aluto-2026-58,serk-a40-2025-l,serk-a40-2025-xl/

*note that the Serk bikes would add ~2cm to stack due to external headset cups.

Everything about the XL sounds perfect except the stack. I’m worried it’s too tall. I ran my Tarmac with 2cm, Crux had 1cm, Aluto is slammed. Even slammed, the XL would be around 630 stack. Which is about 2cm taller than every other bike I’ve ridden. The L is great in about every spec but the reach is a tad short. Which seems easier to fix. But as a gravel bike the wheelbase is a little short as well.

So I’m not sure which way I want to go. I could go external routing and that drops another 1-1.5 cm. But I do like fully hidden cables.
