Aero is Overrated (for crits)
Had a debate with a buddy about a new bike he was going to buy for crits. We were talking about the best crit bike and I said a Scott Addict RC is the best crit bike out there right now. Here’s my reasoning.
It’s got the best stiffness to weight ratio out there. It’s super light. It’s not an aero brick. And it can fit large tires.
For a crit, aero is less important than most other race disciplines. It’s more about positioning, tactics, bike handling, and just knowing how to read a race. So going for an all out aero bike is less important. Having a super light yet stiff bike will help with all the micro accelerations out of corners or responding to moves. With the stop/start nature of crits, that will be more important. And with how shitty the roads are, being able to run a fat tire is a huge benefit. A 32 tire on wide rims that inflates out to 35-36mm while keeping the smooth transition on a wide rim is the way to go.
Thoughts?
And before somebody suggests it, I’ll save you the time of typing out the most overused cliche phrase on here, “the best crit bike is the bike you can replace.” Cool, great advice. We can replace any bike. How original.
