Update: I’m the guy from California who was let go last month. I took the FS exam last week for the first time with a $16 Casio and a dream!

Thank you everyone for your support with both study tips and just overall really supporting me and making me feel like powering through.

I got introduced to surveying almost two years ago when I started school and started working full time. It broke my heart to be let go without any kind of heads up and it really made me question whether or not I should keep going. I already had the exam scheduled at that point, with the 6 hours of driving, hotel, and exam fees it cost me about $500 to take a shot.

I was promised by my employer when I started, $5,000 for passing the FS exam, as well as reimbursement for my college expenses. Too bad I don’t work there anymore, how convenient.

In a week I leave for a 4 week long motorcycle ride across the country, I’m going to feel better knowing that I have more to look forward to when I return.

By the way, my test was almost 50 percent math, I had 16 minutes left on the clock by the time I finished. Almost ALL of it was in the second half too. I walked out feeling absolutely brutalized.

I take the FS exam in 5 days. Any uncommon advice?

This will be my first attempt. I completed the Survey program at a community college and have been running through practice tests non-stop using Survey Bible, as well as the NCEES practice exam. All signs point to me being extremely well prepared, but I can’t shake this feeling like I am going to fail because of something.

I’m going to need to drive almost 4 hours to the testing center the day before and then stay in a hotel, with the test starting at 8am. I’ve adjusted my sleeping pattern so I wake up at 5am every morning. I’m going to be surprised if I even sleep much the night before just from the anxiety fueled insomnia.

I’m the guy that got let go a week ago and passing this test will be the ultimate vindication and be extremely influential on my next job prospects. I’m reaching for what kind of unusual things you did to help prepare that maybe are not common or you discovered yourself.

Thanks

You asked: here is my distraction canotefex

This is my kit-bash/ modified triarch stalker, and it is the ULTIMATE distraction. It is fast, has a huge board presence, is cheap, and can mess up enemies that choose to ignore it. And best of all, it LOOKS way stronger than it actually is!

Necron Dominion should be like a wildfire. Black ash on the inside and glowing on the perimeter. Much better visual clarity.

Consider this orange as green Necron energy and remove the smoke…

No backlog, high overhead, low profit, Just got fired

I’m in Northern CA, I started a year and a half ago with zero experience, paid my way through college night classes while working full time as a rodman, and I take the FS exam in two weeks. I worked in field-to-finish projects and could run a gun and draft.

I was terminated today, I was not laid off. I was told I wasn’t meeting expectations for someone who has worked in surveying for a year and a half. I was frequently given party chief work.

Company just bought a second brand new work truck and filled it with tools, and it’s been collecting dust in the parking lot. All of the other crews are logging a lot of overhead hours, it’s bleak.

I loved my time in surveying but this feels like an absolute gut punch. I loved my job.

I take my test in two weeks, and have a brand new motorcycle in the garage. I’m going to pass the FS, ride my bike to the other side of the country, and then I really don’t know what happens after that.
I don’t want to think about it.

A couple of questions for those of you who have recently taken the FS exam.

  1. Do you know if the exam is a pass/fail
based off of a total overall score, or if it is based on getting a minimum passing grade in each specific category?

  2. Did you receive the supplemental ALTA, FEMA, Model, etc standards in digital format in addition to the FS Handbook? I see information online for those but a co-worker who recently took the exam said he only had access to the FS Handbook.

I finally completed the Combat Patrol! I absolutely love painting Grey Knights, my Necron pile of shame might actually never be completed now.

Anyone else run out of work?

I work for a smallish regional rural engineering firm where we all complete field to finish work, we have 5 crews total in two states. We currently have all 4 other offices reporting that they are “slow” and asking my boss for work. We are so slow at my office I have been helping the civil drafters all week.
I stayed home today voluntarily to work on studying for the FS exam I take next month. This should be the busiest time of year, right? I am worried my company is going to start having to issue lay-offs.

Are we finally in the recession?
Bros, is it so over ?
Are we cooked?

My understanding is next week we have zero survey work scheduled, office or field, I’ll be doing mundane basic civil drafting for the foreseeable future.

As a Necron player, I am blown away by the shear Aura the true scale grey knights have. Just painted these. My first Grey Knights.

First Grey Knight has been Deployed!

In anticipation for a future refresh, I wanted to dial in the Paint scheme ahead of time!
Been playing Necrons since 9th edition, this is a big change from my usual minis I paint!

Good evening, been a little worried sick my brand new motorcycle may have something funny going on with it’s frame, the bike was transported in a trailer while resting on its kickstand, (while strapped in).
I pulled off the kickstand bracket just to get some peace of mind. I noticed this shiny line that does not quite extend to the entire length of this machined area for the steel bracket to sit flush.

Is this line some kind of machining mark? It seems unusual to not smooth the entire area evenly. My big fear is that it’s some kind of crack caused by stress or warping. You cannot feel it with a finger.

I’ve got a BRAND NEW 2025 Honda Goldwing, I’ve just reached 350 miles with it, I’ve been very anxious because I am worried it may be damaged and may reveal itself years from now.

I bought this 6 hours away and the dealership helped me load it up on a uhual motorcycle trailer, it ended up being very well strapped in from all sides and with the front wheel secure to the chock. I drove 280 miles home and then it occurred to me that it was strapped on LEANING ON THE KICKSTAND.

I spent some time panicking over if it’s possible the frame could get impacted as the trailer bounced down the road! I took it to a shop, who promptly took off the kickstand and revealed a perfectly normal frame, and they said the bolts showed so sign of damage, and nothing was bent. Kickstand is steel, and was not bent. The frame is aluminum. As of right now, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with anything, clean bill of health. My question is: could the aluminum be hiding invisible damage that would get worse over the years potentially leading to a failure in the future? It’s making me extremely stressed out it’s hard to even enjoy the bike!
