1981 GL1100
It's still a work in progress but I've gone on a few rides now and am quite happy.
Is this safe to ride on?
Just noticed this while checking the air pressure...wondering if I need to turn around and go home...
After 2 years of fighting the quads ive decided to do a single carb conversion.
Ive been fighting the quad carbs for 2 years and missed almost 2 whole riding seasons because of how tempermental and unreliable they've been. Decided to do a single carb swap, got the sice stainless manifold and a vw beatle carb. Im not going to just trash the quads as they are original to the bike but for the last 2 years I cant run the bike for more than a few minutes without some new carb issue showing up. Lately they just wont hold sync. I gave up last summer but with the weather turning good again I cant stand to have the bike just sitting in the garage.
Question about syncing carbs
How do I know how much to restrict the airflow? Like would it be bad if I adjusted them and I restricting one too much so it was displayed differently? Does it matter? Because if you restrict the airflow of each one differently wouldn’t it not show the actual pressure?
New to me
Thank you everyone for answering my question in my previous post! I’m very excited to pick this up in a couple days time
GL1500 vs GL1800
I’m getting a Goldwing later this season/early next season, and I can’t decide which I want. If I went with a GL1500 I’d probably go for a 94 Aspencade in green. If I were to do GL1800 I don’t really know. I don’t really care about the onboard tech. I want reverse, heated seat and/or grips, and luggage that can fit two full face helmets. I don’t want one repair to essentially kill the bike because the part doesn’t exist anymore either. I’ve got enough of that anxiety with a 2002 Buell.
The GL1500 by my understanding is more comfortable for the passenger, has more spacious luggage, and weighs a bit less with a slightly more “characterful” engine. It’s what I think of when I think Goldwing and I love the look.
The GL1800 loses some comfort and luggage space, but has more modern conveniences and uses a timing chain instead of a timing belt. Parts are going to be more common because it’s newer. It looks kinda like a mid-2000s Chevy product to me with the light design, not my favorite, but I’d get used to it.
Which should I go for?
Would you buy it?
Guy wants 4500. It's a 95. 40000k on the dashboard but who knows. Blue smoke on start and difficult to get into first. No paperwork on maintenance. Sound system only worked up front and was weak at full volume. I don't think its worth 4500k for but I'm worried it could have much more wrong with it. Didn't test drive but rear break had a lot of travel and not so much on front. Would you buy, lowball, or walk?
New to me 2001 GL1800
Just picked up a 2001 GL1800. It has 100,000 miles, but runs like a top. I couldn’t pass up the deal. Rode it 100 miles back home yesterday. Absolutely love it. Definitely an upgrade to my 83 GL1100.
A naked GL1800 for general appreciation
Just putting this moto porn here 😍
Unsure
All I’ve read about these bikes seems to be very positive. For me, what attracts me is the rising position, the seats and also the storage capacity. I am going to look at a 2008 1800gl tomorrow and have never ridden anything so big before, I’ve ridden a cruiser once but my main ride is a gsxr600 srad.
The bike looks tidy but I’m just not sure if I’m making a silly jump here in terms of totally changing my current ride
Latest addition to the garage. Yes I have an addiction 😆
Just picked up this chonky girl. 2006 GL1800 with 68,000 km in great condition. I wasn't especially looking for a trailer, but that was part of the deal, along with a spare rear wheel with new tyre, and a hydraulic bike lift. My gosh that was one smooth and pleasant ride home.
New here getting a goldwing soon
Hello everyone! New here and possibly getting a 1979 Gl1000 from a trade! Ive always wanted a goldwing and hopefully the trade goes well. It needs some work but thats alright. Just wondering if there are any tips or tricks on these older goldwings. I’ve heard things about doing a carb swap from the 4 individuals to a single carb. Anyone done that? Just happy to hopefully own a goldwing!
"Siren" 1984 Honda Goldwing Aspencade GL1200A
This is my Aspy, I picked it up back in 2017 off a friend. I mostly have ridden sport bikes, and never consider owning something like this. My friend was selling it, he let me borrow it for the weekend, and I fell in love with it and he priced it to me so cheap i couldn't pass it up. It has only 32k miles, and unmolested, even had the OEM plugs. I decided it's a forever moto for me, and have done a bunch of mods, and serviced it. Now it's got 40k and is still going strong.
Rear brake rotor replacement GL1500
Hello, beautiful people! I'm in dire need for your knowledge: my rear rotor has reached the end of its days, so I was looking to replace it. Where I live (Italy) it seems to be utterly impossible to find an OEM replacement, and even aftermarket ones are scarce.
All I found are two options: one by NG and the other by EBC. Which one is the most solid, based on your opinions and experience?
Thanks, ciao!
EDIT: Closed! I'll go with the EBC one. Thank you kindly for your help, everyone! This is such a great community.
The GL1000 fefresh has commenced 😁
So I picked up this beauty last weekend and rode it 415 miles home. The bike runs great overall and in the cold hard light of day, a week later, I'm still super happy with my acquisition. It is however 50 years old and unrestored, so it must be thoroughly checked and some areas freshened up.
I launched into it last night after work and so far I have got the front brakes and struts out. I have confirmed that all the brake hoses are factory original with manufacturing markings from 1975. The calipers seem to function ok and have relatively new Bendix pads, although the pistons seem a bit stiff. The front wheel is unmarked and runs true with no wobble. Also pulled the left timing cover and found Gates 274 belts in good condition.
The intention is to do some routine maintenance and a few sympathetic upgrades. The goal is to make it reliable and safely usable, whilst keeping the look stock. The planned work list is as follows.
- Rebuild front struts and fill with heavier grade oil for improved damping. They are completely shot and have no discernable damping.
- Rebuild calipers and fit new pads.
- Replace all brake hoses.
- Change timing belts and idlers.
- Set valve clearances.
- Change spark plugs.
- Change engine oil and filter.
- Fit Dynatek electronic ignition.
- Replace fuel hoses and filter.
- Repair fuel level sender as it's rusty and leaking with a full tank.
- Flush cooling system and replace coolant hoses and thermostat.
- Fit Stedi 7" LED headlight to factory bucket. Yeah I know this will detract from the stock look. The Stedi Heritage units do however look quite nice and will give a huge improvement in illumination.
- Fit DC/DC buck/boost converter in place of factory voltage regulator.
- Drain and replace final drive oil.
- Replace head bearings.
- Clean and lube all cables, including Speedo and tach.
I'm sure I will discover other areas needing attention as I go.
Who else on here taken on a GL1000? I'd love to have an insight into potential problem areas and ideas for further sensible upgrades.
Peace ✌🏻
This is a goldwing.
Maybe started life as a valkyrie. I don’t know. But i like it.
Not AI. I witnessed this majestic beast with my own eye.
Discuss.
Should this go somewhere?
I'm in the process of removing the carbs from my 1980 GL1100 and found, tucked up out of the way, this black plastic pipe attached to the circled block at one end and a screw tight in the other end.
Should the screw end be connected to something or can it be left alone?
A previous owner has obviously fiddled with it at some point.
Carb removal
Anyone any tips on how to remove the carbs from the bike?
I'm taking mine off of my 1980 GL1100, and I'm struggling to get the right hand side of the carbs past the coolent pipe lump that sits under the carb body. There's no wriggle room to go up and the bottom of the carb body keeps hitting the lump.
Any ideas/tips, short of splitting the carbs in two?
