Paranoia, PVP, and metagaming... but could it be more?
I'm new to GTA. My played time is around 30 hours, but most of that was spent in the character creator, and much of the rest was spent walking.
It has always seemed weird to me how secretive people are. Not the characters: the players. .
I am starting to think that it's because of the focus on ritualized PVP. The setting has such potential for interesting conflicts and character interactions, which is what attracted me to it. But all anyone wants to do is one specific PVP scenario over and over.
get hostages
negotiate terms
have a timed car chase
I must have looked at the rules for a dozen servers by now, and every time, it's "no metagaming" followed by fifteen rules for when metagaming is required in order to facilitate the negotiated PVP ritual.
It's clearly the highest priority, even if the server advertises other things, like dreary day jobs and extra benefits for the color-coded criminal cliques. Look at their rules, and how hard they hammer the cop thing in their ads. Everything else is secondary.
But there is so much more we could be doing in this setting! I feel like I'm at a great restaurant where everyone is filling up on the yeast rolls. I like yeast rolls, I do.
But is this all there is? Dreary day jobs to grind grind grind like a corporate serf, paranoid little color coded cliques, and elaborate rules for metagaming so the ritual PVP scenario is fair to the biggest, most well equipped gang (the cops), specifically?
P. S. This was originally a response to someone else's post. I made it its own post to see what insights experienced players might bring. Please share your experience.
