Am I romanizing this career?

Hi guys. I’m typing this very nervously, but I really want some insight as to if this career is meant for me. I start nursing school in two weeks, and this entire time I’ve been excited, but now that things are rolling up I’m starting to feel increasingly discouraged by people around me. Whenever I tell people I’m going into nursing, I met with three main things: “I’m a nurse and you’re going to regret that”, or “ nursing is nice, but the nurses around me complain a lot about stress and exhaustion” or “the difficulties of the profession will truly outweigh the benefits”. I feel like I’ve only been encouraged by 2.5 people to pursue this career (0.5 because they were pre-nursing and they pulled out, worried it wasn’t meant for them) and I need some insight on if I’m really emphasizing the pros.

I want to do nursing because I was my parent’s primary caregiver for years before they passed away. It was really difficult, but what really guided me through the grief was the fact that I was there to support them during their hardest time. It was really fulfilling and it helped me sleep at night. I know that I’m good at it, and I know it felt good, so I want to do that professionally. Bedside care doesn’t gross me out: I will bathe a patient, shave them, feed them, pull out their stitches, clean up opened wounds with blood and pus all without batting an eye. Because I’ve done that before. I don’t want to do bedside long-term, as what I want from my career does better suit other positions, but it is something I don’t mind doing in the meantime. I also really appreciate how nursing has many other pros: you can switch between specialties if you decide that you don’t want to do your current one (on top of inpatient + outpatient), there are a lot of positions that you can work your way up to (travel, NP, surgical tech, CNA, teaching, etc .. I don’t mind going back to school for anything), the on-and-off schedule suits what I want (I’ve worked jobs where having 12 hour shifts allowed me to have multiple days off and it really worked good for me) … but despite all this, I’m still met with a lot of discouragement. I really can’t tell if there’s a light in my eyes it’s going to die if I do this. I think recent talk is making me extremely anxious.

I am aware of the mistreatment that you have by patients and staff and superiors. I am aware of the exhaustion and burnout. If you were somebody that has similar pros to me, does this defeat that so heavily?

In regards to Ontario specifically, I know that there is a problem with finding jobs right now . I’m extremely lucky to say that I am able to relocate. I say this in case discouragement comes from the lack of job access.

Thank you for reading this longer post. I’m trying to go into my program confidently and excitedly as a positive mood does influence your academic performance. Thank you as well for any kind of insight.

The best laptop that functions as a tablet?

Hi guys. I really need to figure out my digital situation soon. I need help finding a laptop that also works as a tablet (touch screen, & has a pen you can buy to write with on the screen). I was initially planning on buying just a MacBook and an Apple iPad, but I’m worried about it not being able to run specific things that I might need to download for statistics, and I also heard that my idea does the same thing just in a more cost-effective and familiar manner. Did any other nursing student have a similar device? I’m trying to find a suitable one. Thank you very much.

Is Hello Fresh Worth It?

Hi guys. I’m new to this subreddit, so my apologies if this was asked anytime recently. In the mail, I got 2 codes for 11 free meals + free shipping on first box + free sides for as long as I’m subscribed. I am moving soon, and I think having meals already prepared rather than me having to cook as I move/adjust is really nice; however, I’ve been seeing some pretty unhappy reviews in this subreddit and am wondering if it’s worth getting. Is it worth it for the price? Do you ever have problems with the products/customer service? Is it filling? Do you have choices for the specific meals or are the boxes solely based on the preferences picked? I only plan on getting one box for the sake of having one less thing to do as I move in a few weeks, but may consistently do it if it really is endorsed by people. Thanks for your help :)

Edit: replying to things soon but I’m Canadian :)

Experiences Prior to Nursing on a Resume?

hey everybody, I have a little bit of a silly question, but I just wanted to ask about your stances on applying to nursing positions with a resume, including non-nursing related positions. I am doing a 19-month nursing program, but I have about three years of working experience under my belt from before the program (ex. A tutor that was hired by my university for three years, a chemistry research assistant for three years, an optometry tech job for less than a year, and a cashier position for three years). I wanted to include this on my resume to showcase a long-term work history; however, I was advised against it because some people say that information isn’t really necessary. Some people say they only really care about their nursing degree and preceptors who can talk good about you. I feel really bad for saying this, but the person who gave me this advice hadn’t really been the nicest to me in the past, and with how the market is now, I almost worried that this advice comes with ill intent … so I wanted to reach out and ask what people think about my experience ranging from 2021-current. Thank you very much.

edit: nursing school is a very private thing i’m doing so i cannot ask the people around me. ignore this question if it’s kind of dumb! :,)

Your quickest but healthiest cooked dish? (+ recipe?)

hey guys. In September, I’m going to be moving out to go to an accelerated program. If there is one thing I really don’t have down, it’s cooking. Whenever I was busy in school, I would either just order food or pop something in my air fryer (chicken strips, fries, etc). I really want to be able to cook healthy and hearty meals while I’m away, but I also want really quick meals because an accelerated program would really need my undivided attention. What is a healthy and hearty meal that you quickly cook at home? If possible, can you share a recipe? Ideally, I want something under 30 minutes, but I know beggars can’t be choosers. thanks so much.

edit: i’m also a beginner cook. so i probably cannot do something very elaborate like making my own pasta or handling a whole turkey. i appreciate any input, but just a psa :)

Unexpected items to buy for first-time mover?

Hi guys. I’m moving out in two months to study at a school about three hours away. It’s my very first time moving away from family, and a lot of my friends are still living with family. So I feel like it’s hard for me to find advice around me. I’m making a list of everything I need to pack (toiletries, cleaning products, etc) … but what is something that you unexpectedly needed while moving out/after moving out that you think is underrated, yet very helpful? I know it’s kind of a stupid question, but I’m moving in very close to my actual start date. Because my program is very accelerated, I don’t see myself having a lot of time to do a whole lotta shopping. So I’m trying to prepare now while I have the time! Thank you.

placements - does it transfer between gaming platforms?

hey guys. i’m a console player but for the overwatch drives that just finished i played it on desktop because i was the only person in my squad that was console. it was fun, and we decided to focus on doing our placements as a group for the new season. i want to play my placements on pc, since we can all be in the same ranked match, but i do regularly play on console. if i log out of my pc to play on my console, will my ranked position transfer over too? i saw in this subreddit 3yrs ago that console and pc are two separate bodies and that it wont transfer over. i’m just wondering if that’s the same nowadays. thanks!

[WIP] how to fix a loose strand (beginner)?

hi guys. i’m a beginner to cross-stitching. this is my first pattern and i’m very excited; however, i’m not sure why this thread suddenly became loose over here (tip of the needle). It was not loose until I had to revisit the box when doing the row beneath it. It’s bothering me and I really do want to fix it. Does anybody know how to fix this without reversing? Sorry if this is silly, I just wanted to fix it before getting way too into the pattern! Thank you so much!

New Convert - Help Me With Some Prayer Questions?

salam everybody. sorry if these are silly questions. i am somebody who recently embraced islam. i have some questions about praying that i can’t have answered in-person. i have been able to pray all 5 prayers these last two days! super exciting but i want to make sure that i am able to constantly do it right:

  1. what should a muslim do if they cannot pray at a certain time due to circumstances? for example, tomorrow i am going to an award ceremony that take place during duhr/asr prayers. i am winning an award on a stage so i cannot leave temporarily to pray. do i need to redeem the prayer later with extra rukats?

  2. i know that prayer is invalid if you don’t have the right positioning. what do i do if i need to hold my phone during prayer to read the quran/prayer steps? i don’t know all the surahs by heart yet, nor do i know all the prayer recitations (ex. sitting after the second rukat and saying ‘itahaytu lillah…’) i know with more time ill be less dependent, but as of right now im still learning. i tried to put it on the floor so i could just look over but i can’t see it that well.

  3. is it permissible to make a prayer up later if it’s intentional but with good intentions? i share a small and quiet space with somebody who did tell me that whenever i wake up to wash up and pray, i wake them up too. if fajr is at 5am, then they’re being woken up earlier than they usually have to. i feel bad disturbing them because they work 7:30am-5:30pm, and need the rest. i do wake up around 8am though. am i allowed to pray fajr the night before to prevent them from waking up? can i pray at 8am to also prevent them from waking up? i want to be mindful. i know this is technically intentional but i want to know if anybody else has an answer based on their own experience.

thank you! i know these are more basic questions but i was worried about running into contradictory information or so. i keep reading different things (ex. don’t make up the prayer but do a lot of duaa from one article, whereas another article says i must make up the prayer and make duaa too). just wanted some guidance! thank you!

Western Nursing - Bad Clinicals?

hi guys. I got accepted into both McMaster and Western for the compressed nursing programs. I have to decide my desired program by tonight (it’s a little last-minute because I was waiting on both acceptances + I was waiting for another program, which I got waitlisted for). I want to attend Western primarily because living in London is significantly cheaper than Hamilton, and because London is closer to home than Hamilton (not a huge difference, 2hrs vs 3hrs). I’m not sure if I want to be limited by the Learn-and-Stay grant, so finances are very important to me.

However, people are saying that western isn’t super great clinically. McMaster has plenty of hospitals, enhancing your experience. But what’s so bad about the clinical placements at Western? Did you have to travel very far? Were there less clinical placements rotations/days due to less hospitals? I’m not seeing enough detail about the cons of the program and want to know before it’s too late :( thanks!

Where to check how much OSAP I have left (NSLSC)?

Hi guys. I finished my bachelors of science, and my next degree is a 2-year degree. I took up 5 years-worth of OSAP and I was told OSAP might have 1.5 years left of funding available for me? But I cannot find that at all on the NSLSC website. I'm not sure where to go. Any help? Thanks!

Western vs McMaster (Accelerated Nursing)

Hi everyone! I am extremely lucky to say that I got accepted into both accelerated nursing programs at McMaster and Western. I have until the 22nd to decide which university to go to, but I’m not from Western or McMaster. I only know 1 friend at Western (not in nursing) and nobody from McMaster. Can anyone from either school give advice on their campuses, housing, nursing programs, and overall why the school is better? Thanks :)

McMaster vMMI - were we allowed pen & paper?

Sorry for the stupid weird question, but when I was prepping for the interview, I thought we would have more time for the prep phase. I had a pen and paper beside me on my desk, but as I was doing the interview, I realized that I didn’t need to write down notes; however, I had my pencil in view because I was fidgeting with it. I put it down to not look like I was writing anything, but it was definitely picked up on camera. Does anyone know if we were not allowed to have pen and paper? Apparently the med school vMMI doesn’t allow it for McMaster so I’m freaking out. Because if it’s not allowed, I do want to email the school and let them know that I was just fidgeting with it. Because that is the truth. Thanks.
