Fellow students from my own country cringes me out

This post is inspired by another person calling out the lack of English language skills in foreign students. I know my people so well, of course most of them have far wealthier families than I do, yet the trivial things just make me roll my eyes more often than I wanted to.

It’s dozens of missed jokes in the class slides because they are completely unaware of the context, it’s calling local Aussies “foreigners”. It’s dissing Australia and saying there’s no fun while they sit around within their enclosed social circles.

Other subreddits of Australian universities have recently seen posts about these students outright promoting cheating methods even in emails. So many things about them in academic abilities are extremely questionable. These people really make me sick to my stomach.

High school experience

Hey guys so I came from a culture where high school is meant to be super competitive and stressful. At first sight, Australian high schoolers seem much more relaxed and don’t have much to worry about.

However I’ve recently just realized that VCE exams are not particularly easy and that ATAR could be really competitive, too. So I’m curious to hear what you guys think of your own experience in high school. Was it stressful for you? What was the biggest lesson outside of the usual curriculum? Have you ever felt inferior to your peers?

Moreover I am curious about what the difference in experience at private vs public education. And do you guys think people here carry their high school psychology into adulthood?

Chapel St. Closures Update

For those who said I was lying or trolling on the last post, here’s what I gathered. There’s more actually, at least 20 have closed down. However, maybe they will flip around and be occupied again, I don’t know.

How do you know the products are not tampered?

While obviously the chances of finding a needle hidden in the strawberries are extremely low, I still get paranoid sometimes when the packaging comes a little bit off.

For example the pouch yoghurts, which are always so easy to open, often leave me thinking if someone has already opened them at Woolies and spoiled them. Also with the 80 cents water, if someone put something in it I might not even be able to tell right away. And I know it only takes less than a minute, so the security won’t even be able to notice.

The meats, what if someone sticks a needle and injects something? Even if they are sealed they still get me worrying. What do you guys think? Do I just need to calm down?

Experience decline

Hi guys. I am making this post to see if it’s just me or if everyone is feeling this as well.

So when I first came here everyone is very soft spoken and polite, wherever I go there would be a “ how are you “ most of the time. Now the longer I stay here, the less smiles I’m seeing. Especially service wise. The most you can expect is a dry and expressionless “hi”.

I was thinking maybe it’s because of the fluctuating fuel prices? I even thought it was karma because I didn’t smile at all when I first got here. I don’t think people in services are obligated to do anything extra but this used to be a welcoming city.

I thought kindness was contagious and one person being polite can spread to others, however I don’t think it’s working.

Shop closures - how bad is the rent? (Melbourne)

So I walked past Chapel st. recently, was genuinely surprised by how many shop fronts have closed down, with huge “For lease “ stickers slammed on the window. A men’s clothing store, a vintage shop, a former cafe, even a Bonds outlet if I recall correctly. The empty rate is striking.

Now obviously this is a beloved precinct and has been troubled by crime. But I figured the most probable reason they’re shutting down is the rent. Businesses have been suffering in these years, yes. I understand low profit margins. But why such massive closures just recently?

I know agents sometimes are not happy disclosing the details. However this gets me so curious about the rent on Chapel street. Any insider who knows how much the rent has increased?

Zoologist hyrax fragrance

So I tried this fragrance a while back it was absolutely horrendous. I have always admired this fragrance line, the concept and how bold they are. They’re not shy on using animatic scents. And they convey the idea of the animals’ habitat.

However this one is just appalling. It is literally a feces smell, pardon my words. I love hyrax I think they are like my spirit animal sometimes, like how random they are. But oh wow, I’ve tried a bunch of other bottles from zoologist this is among the most unwearable ones. Surprisingly there was a customer at the store who really loved it.

So I’m really curious about how you guys think? Anyone here that loves this perfume?

Dressing to fit in

Hi guys I’m new to this sub and I’m so glad I found it. Apologies if similar questions have been asked.

Being a young person, foreign to this land, I’m mainly noticing three categories of people.

  1. Business/professionals, these people dress extremely similarly outside of offices. I mean where else can you get casuals in a physical store other than Gazman, R. M. Williams and Oxford. I like their clean and mature look. But it’s so easy to achieve and just boring. People in this group might also opt for upmarket stuff which is phony to me personally, since it is so nuanced you can’t even make a distinction looking from afar.

  2. Zillennials, late 20s to early 30s dressing absolutely classy and sleek. They obviously shop more niche brands, which aren’t hard to find if only you just look. Their styles are my favorites. Very clean, modern, urban, clean etc. Examples would obviously be something resembling a carhartt jacket and a pair of light colored jeans. However if you look for their stuff it’s actually even more expensive, often a few hundred dollars.

  3. Thrifty students. I also thrift but the people who are the most noticeable are art students. Their pieces and accessories are very approachable price wise. But it’s quite suggestive, I mean they’re obviously signaling that they’re artsy people. I love their style but it’d be out of touch for someone who just wants to fit in.

For me personally, I just want to not stand out while having my own personal style. What I have acquired from my observations is that I need to find the balance in maturity, price and commonality.

I’m looking to find certain brands, or specific garment types that might sit perfectly in this position. What I currently find perfect is actually big W. I have to say that some of their designs are actually comparable with Zara. I also explored H&M, Uniqlo and Cos however their quality is an absolute run down. I wouldn’t suggest anyone to buy from them. What do you guys think? What are some of the nice places that I can find nice clothes to dress like the locals?

Carlton Driving Test Humiliation Ritual

Hi guys so I’ve failed the tests 3 consecutive times in this test site. I have to admit that I chose this site out of proximity and my love of this beautiful area itself.

However as you know the road conditions of this site is extremely complicated. Bike lanes on every route, crammed parking along the road, blocking your views of incoming vehicles at stop signs, excessive pedestrians, narrow roundabouts. The most of all, everyone speeds on Lygon St.

Having witnessed road rage forever, the embarrassment is what bothers me the most. I don’t think everyone knows that they’re driving in a testing area, where every minute there’s a learner on the road during the day. For me, sitting like a turtle in the midst of busy inner suburb traffic, is really inconsiderate. People in Carlton drive recklessly and it shows every time.

I don’t know what to do anymore, the car has been sitting there for months now untouched, I can’t afford an instructor anymore, after already paying for hours and hours of lessons. I don’t know anyone here, just sitting here absolutely infuriated.

Extremely annoying delivery [UK - Australia]

Hi guys I’m a recipient in Australia, purchased something from a UK seller and got pissed by the delivery. As far as I can tell, Vinted most probably have collaboration with Australia post. Here are a few things that happened in order.

  1. In fear of theft, my address was filled with an Australia Post collection office. Vinted allows you to choose collection points directly on the app.

  2. When I try to track the package on the platform it shows the courier is APG (which is actually also Australia Post).

  3. I got a message from Global Express today saying that my package has been delivered. They did not provide any further information. Usually there would be a code, or you can probably find a photo of delivery, there wasn’t.

  4. I then called Global Express 2 times they told me to contact Wiseway, which is the third party they are handing my package to. The reason why they’re handing it to them is that they cannot deliver to a post office… are we ok??

  5. I then tried to contact wiseway and google only show their business enquiry number, or that they probably don’t have a customer line for recipients at all.

The thing that lost me is that, if the courier is AP from the very beginning, why can’t you just put it in a AP locker then? Now that these guys have to involve 3 different parties which is so irritating. I acknowledge that it’s quite fast for an international package but this is SOOO CONFUSING & FRUSTRATING.

International student getting weird looks regularly

Hey guys so I’m an international student and I love most people here, since you guys have been so friendly most of the time. However I’m unable to parse weird looks I get once in a while.

For reference I dress really modestly. Other than looking foreign I would say there is nothing noticeable about me. I do understand that a lot of international students have their own habits and don’t really interact with locals that much. For me, going out and visiting shops is my past time. I get it that they can most probably tell that I’m an international student, I just don’t get why you would glance over an ordinary person.

The look I get is usually a confused one, not necessarily unwelcoming, but like trying to figure out what I’m doing there. I have gotten these looks at a vinyl shop, a popular cafe, on a train and more other occasions. They really make me feel uncomfortable.

I personally never stare at people because I think it’s impolite. But since I’m not an Australian I would really love to know what you think and why I would get these looks. Do you get nasty looks even if you’re a local? Thanks.

Restaurant/pub unspoken dress codes

Hey guys my apologies for the silly question. But as a foreigner it’s a bit difficult to read the room every time when you go to places. Often times social codes don’t translate.

I’m aware that anyone can be the recipient of weird looks and attitudes. However today I saw a pub that had a little sign explicitly asking customers to dressing casually. Is this a thing here?

On the other hand, I am curious about what is expected to walk into more expensive spaces. To my knowledge Australians are grounded people, but phonies can be everywhere. How do I put myself together to not get judged.

Thanks!!

Late evening playlist appreciation

I usually do groceries quite late and it has been so uplifting what they’ve been playing in the store.

I haven’t heard of those 2000s pop songs for a while and honestly they just feel so cheerful and nostalgic. They reminded me of great times spent listening to these artists, when they were peaking. Made me wanted to find the guy making the playlist and shake their hands.

I’m aware someone has already made a post about the songs being repetitive. However since I never worked at woolies I don’t know if all the stores use the same playlist at the same time. Just simply loving this cheerful music bringing good vibes to my evenings.
