Should I go semi-auto or super-auto for my first espresso machine? [$1000]
Location: Bay Area, CA
I'm thinking about switching from a moka pot and milk frother (currently use La Llave and like it) to a real espresso machine. I'm so overwhelmed by options, especially now that the algorithm has me and is flooding me with espresso machines every other post. Reading this sub confuses me even more b/c there's a lot of espresso connoisseurs here, and I'm starting to get the impression that if I don't have a super expensive grinder/machine, my coffee will taste like mud. 😭
Some information about my coffee situation:
- Drink type: Always milk drinks (lattes) and the occasional Americano, never straight espresso
- Frequency: One coffee every morning, sometimes an afternoon cup; weekends x2 for my wife
- Space: Limited countertop space
- Experience: Beginner, but fine with manually filling portafilter/tamping — just don't want to grind/weigh beans fresh every day
- Manual/electric: Prefer electric
- Beans: Not planning to buy top-shelf beans, may even use pre-ground for convenience (I can grind myself but prob in bulk and not per-cup)
- Candidates: Semi-auto with built-in grinder (e.g. Breville Barista Express) vs. super-automatic
Given I don't mind the tamping step but want to skip daily grinding/weighing, and my palate is honestly satisfied by Starbucks (please no hate, I'm a simple person) — does a semi-auto with integrated grinder make sense, or is super-auto simpler for someone like me?
Side note: I would like something with a steam wand rather than something where the milk is sitting in a plastic receptacle you attach and it gets steamed.
Some additional questions/concerns:
- kind of concerned about the cleaning/maintenance of each, so please speak to that
- also very concerned, given the price, of what happens when these machines break and they are out of warranty -- are there repair ppl who specialize in fixing these? like licensed repaired ppl coffee machines? is there a price point for the machine where it's just more cost effective to throw it out and buy a new one? how long do they generally last before they need to be replaced, etc...
