My mother in law is in the ER (again) and she admitted on the phone last night that she was addicted to opiates and also alcohol after trying to jump in front of a car.

My grandfather in law said to go to her apartment while she's in the 72 hour hold in ER and grab all the opiate medications and dispose of them. I told my wife I think that's illegal because we're not doctors and don't have the authority to make the decision to dump her medications. We also hold legal and medical power of attorney. Mother in law is actively trying to get better and asked us to get her to rehab.

Any insight would be extremely helpful.
