Ryzen 7 5800x3D vs 9 5900, or GPU first?
Pretty simple question really, what would you go for right now, CPU upgrade seeing as GPU prices are insane, or wait for the GPU upgrade? I'll list some specs and prices below for clarity.
Current rig:
Ryzen 5 5800x
RTX 3070
32gb DDR4 3200MT/s
CPU prices:
Ryzen 7 5800x3D - £300
Ryzen 9 5900x - £220
GPU prices:
RTX 4070 - £400-£600
RTX 5070 - £800+
EDIT TO ADD:
I don't game competitively, and use a 1440p 165hz display.
I'd like to keep the price as low as is practicable, so while I won't rule out a 5070 and it's associated increase in price, if I can get away with the 4070 (or equivalent) then that's what I'd prefer.
Regarding the CPU, while I'm aware that the 'x3D line is a gaming oriented range, is it really worth the higher price of a (on paper) better performing CPU? The 5900x performs around 30% better than both the 5800x3D and my current 5800x in synthetic benchmarks, so would the raw numbers negate any potential performance benefits from going the 'x3D route given the higher price?
On to the GPU, I don't really think I'll be picking up a 50 series anytime soon, but I can definitely see a 40 series on the horizon. While I got a great deal for my 3070 a few years ago (managed to pick one up for around 200 quid) and was a fantastic upgrade from my 1060, I can definitely feel the 8gb VRAM at times.
So yeah, what would you say? I'm open to other ideas so if you have any then shoot. I'm aware that many are turning to AMD GPU's right now, I'm not too confident in doing so myself as I'm pretty comfortable with Nvidia's ecosystem, plus I've heard that AMD's software support is lacking in areas, though please correct me if I'm wrong.
