BBC director-general Matt Brittin has revealed that he was sent a 50-minute episode of the sci-fi series, made using artificial intelligence. Speaking at the Royal Television Society conference, Brittin said the episode he saw was ‘pretty good’.

‘I mean, it’s not going to replace humans, and we’ll come on to that. So everyone’s a creator. Not all the creativity is bad.’

Norman  Cook, AKA Fatboy Slim, still has faith in UK festivals, which he says have become embedded in his calendar. So much so that he’s played 100 Glastonbury sets and has a loyal relationship with the Eavis family which he says ‘hasn’t been tarnished by money’.

‘I’ve never been paid to play there,’ he tells us.‘ But at the same time, I’ve never paid to go there. Emily and Michael give me free tickets and allow me to do little quiet gigs in strange places.

‘I’ve played there so many times even when I’m not officially on the bill; some years I’m there in an official capacity and sometimes I’m just there as a sightseer.

‘For me, Glastonbury is the most fun, forward-thinking, beautiful human experience of alternative culture.’

Starring David Mitchell and Robert Webb, the Bafta-winning series ran for four seasons between 2006 and 2010. The show recently marked its 20th anniversary and returned to iPlayer, but with 11 sketches missing.

One of the offending scenes reportedly showed the pair satirising racism while in blackface, which has now been removed. ‘This is a 20-year-old sketch show; in consultation with the programme makers, we have included the ones that still work today and not the ones that don’t,’ a BBC spokesperson said.

The Wicked stars had been due to reunite on stage in a revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sunday in the Park with George at London’s Barbican in 2027, directed by Marianne Elliott.

A statement from Empire Street Productions said: ‘The planned 2027 production of Sunday in the Park with George at the Barbican will no longer proceed as scheduled.

‘Empire Street Productions will retain the rights with a view to presenting the production in 2028. Further details will be announced in due course.’
