To those who own multi-scale guitars (and basses if you have them), what do you do if you want to replace the pickups?

Because as far as I know, the pickup slant varies a lot from brand to brand. And as far as ive checked, only a handful of pickup brands mass-produce pickups meant for extended range guitars. And they're not always cheap compared to perfectly straight pickups.

What are your opinions on crash rides (or however they're spelt), especially in rock and metal drumming? I see some drummers using them, and they don't sound bad, but I can't say if I should get one myself for my kit.

Zildjian vs Sabian vs Meinl vs Paiste. Which cymbals (including the exact series) would you recommend if you want a cymbal sound that works great across many different genres of music?

How well do y'all take care of your guitars?

I've heard how with proper care, you can make a guitar last 40-50 years, or even longer, and it'll still sound usable. Does anyone want to use the same guitar for that long if they're more of a casual player or only tour in smaller to mid popular bands?

With all due respect to rock and ESPECIALLY metal drummers that use large kits, I've always admired rock and metal drummers that can play complex, intricate and memorable drum parts on a smaller, but not too limiting kit. Heck, not all rock and metal drum parts need to be complex and intricate.

A dozen examples I can list are:

  • Brann Dailor (Mastodon)
  • Mario Duplantier (Gojira)
  • Eloy Casagrande (during his Sepultura days)
  • Matt Halpern (Periphery)
  • Matt Garstka (Animals As Leaders)
  • 66Samus (Independent)
  • El Estepario Siberiano (Independent)
  • Ilan Rubin (Nine Inch Nails)
  • Tre Cool (Green Day)
  • Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Queens Of The Stone Age)
  • Travis Barker (Blink-182)
  • Chad Smith (Red Hot Chilli Peppers)

What can we do to make sure that Canadian talent stays in Canada?

I'm not just talking about academic talent and high level professionals, but also talent in sports, acting, music and stuff of that nature. Like I always hear about celebrities born in Canada later moving to the USA or somewhere in Europe for better infrastructure and opportunities. But I wish more of them would stay.

What is the lowest guitar tuning you have used in a 6-string guitar? While I havent tuned lower than Drop C, ive seen some people get as low as A Standard or even Drop G on a baritone 6-string. But is it possible to go lower than that?

A someone who wants to make web games, do I need to go very in-depth in HTML and CSS, or can I get by with mostly Javascript and bare minimum HTML and CSS?

I have been into making video games for a long time, but for some reason never got started until now.

For those who own both straight-scale guitars and multi-scale guitars, how easy/hard is it to switch between the two and play both like you know them?

What are your metal guitar hot takes? I'll go first.

Fanned-fret guitars are overrated. I understand that they exist so that all strings gets optimal tension, and for certain players, that's beneficial. But I have yet to play a fanned-fret guitar (and bass, though that's not exactly relevant to the question) that at least to me, feels comfortable to play.

What is the lowest bass tuning that's usable, especially under distortion?

I only own a 4-string, I can't go down super far, but for those with 5-string basses, how low have you gone that still sounds audible?

To those who use a pitch shifter pedal as a way to sonically emulate lower and higher guitars tunings, especially when playing modern metal, how well do they work exactly for that purpose?

Because I hear a lot of metal guitarists say that even if you go down or up only one or two semitones, you can experience problems with latency, artifacts, weird phasing effects etc, especially when playing dense chords, tremolo picking, or just super fast in general. But I genuinely want a way to be able to play at most 2-3 tunings on one guitar across several guitars because I wanna play in a wide range of guitar tunings (E Standard to A Standard) without actually having to own one guitar for each tuning. And if I went down that route, with the tunings I want to play, that would mean I'd need 14 guitars to cover each tuning I want. But I dont wanna buy that many guitars.

When you're covering a song, how much do you care about it being faithful to the recording? Because a lot of drummers I've met think that if you're covering a song, it has to be faithful to the original, even if the original drummer used a big kit. But how many have the money and space for big kits?

Even if I'm covering something by Rush, Dream Theater, Tool etc, I don't think I should be obligated to use a kit that I don't have to money to buy or the space to keep it in. If anything, if you're a really creative and talented drummer, you don't need a huge drum kit in order to play complex technical drum parts. Not my words, it's Mario Duplantier's.

To those who use Drop Bb/A# tuning, do y'all prefer using it on a 6-string guitar or a 7-string guitar? Because I know the tunings are slightly different in each. Which one is used more by bands?

I'm surprised how many metal guitarists still think that lower tunings = heavier riffs. Sure, lower tunings matter for heaviness, but I'd argue factors like tone, palm muting, power chords, dissonance, syncopation, dynamics and interaction with other instruments affects heaviness before tuning does.

And don't come up to me saying stuff like "wElL yoU cAN't pLay dEAthCORe iN e sTANdarD". Well, let me interest you in a song called Decimate The Weak by symphonic deathcore band Winds of Plague, especially the riff at the 00:50 mark. And that song was in E Standard.

You know what they say, if you can't make a riff sound heavy in E Standard, you can't make a riff sound heavy in Drop A or whatever.

What do I do if the careers that interest me the most, are also careers that are known for being very competitive and very unstable unless you get lucky?

I've tried considering a hybrid approach where my main job is something not very competitive and is very stable, while doing the stuff I personally find interesting on the side. But I can't even decide what would that main job be.

I'm planning on getting my first 7-string guitar hopefully by the end of this year. I have a general idea on what I want my 7-string to have, but I need help to decide one thing. Should I get a multi-scale 7-string, or a straight-scale 7-string?
