Proton for Apple photos backup?

I’m dabbling a bit with Proton email as I try to unwind from Google, but I’m also really looking for a backup for my photos, stored on my iPhone/iCloud. I need just over 500 GB so unfortunately would have to bump up to Duo to store it all, but might be worth it? Researching seems like people don’t love the organization but this is literally just an emergency scenario backup; is Proton Drive good for this type of situation?

Open to other suggestions but they have to be genuinely so easy. Self hosting is not happening. Baby steps over here.

Cannot recover accidentally made kids profile?

TL;DR - I seem to have accidentally made a kids profile with only a name and birth month via YouTube Kids. I deleted it, and now regret it, but "something went wrong" every time I try to recover it. Is this due to there being no email or anything attached to it? Is it not recoverable?

We have had Family Link set up with parents + kids for a while now. Today, I tried to make kid A a YouTube profile so I could white-list content, like I have with kid B. Apparently, I made a whole new "supervised account" with just A's name and birth month, and it was not a white-listing account like I wanted. I went back and made the "kid's profile" for A, and decided to delete this accidental supervised account (AA). Later I got paranoid that deleting AA would somehow affect A, and tried to recover it. However every time it says "something went wrong". I've seen since that kids profiles must have a gmail attached and wonder if this is why? Is this a fluke through YouTube and it was never a proper kids account?

Only the name was similar between A and AA, no email or birthdate attached to AA, so I am probably being paranoid that deleting AA will affect A. A is still listed on Family Link with all the right info, AA is listed under deleted kid's accounts, but with a greyed out icon and a \ through it, and "something went wrong" every time I click "recover".

Cannot recover accidentally created account

TL;DR - I seem to have accidentally made a dependent profile with only a name and birth month. I deleted it, and now regret it, but "something went wrong" every time I try to recover it. Is this due to there being no email or anything attached to it? Is it not recoverable?

(Yes I know it's annoying how often I say dependent, but other words are banned apparently?)

We have had Family Link set up with parents + dependents for a while now. Today, I tried to make dependent A a YouTube account with a dependent profile. Apparently, I made a whole new dependent with just their name and birth month, and it was not a white-listing account like I wanted. I went back and made a dependent "profile" for A, and decided to delete this accidental supervised account (AA). Later I got paranoid that deleting AA would somehow affect A, and tried to recover it. However every time it says "something went wrong". I've seen since that dependent profiles must have a gmail attached and wonder if this is why? Is this a fluke through YouTube and it was never a proper dependent account? Dependent A is still listed in my family, AA is listed under "deleted dependent's accounts", so possibly I am being overly paranoid and A is fine and AA was just weird. Any thought?

Edit: Researched more and apparently in YT I made a "supervised account" when I wanted a (dependent) "profile". I then deleted this supervised account through Family Link but cannot restore it. I guess because it's a profile and not an account with email/birthdate? Anyway I've updated the post accordingly to use the proper terms.

Multiple accounts logged out after suspicious activity/password change on one?

I (email A) got an alert that my family member's email (email B) had been used to sign into a new device. We think this was a fluke (signing into an app using Gmail on their phone, not actually signing into Gmail), but we used laptop B to change the password just in case. No suspicious activity on that email. I then went onto laptop A and found that emails A, C, D, and E on it were all signed out. I logged back in and don't see any suspicious logins but still. These accounts are all in a family but otherwise aren't really connected, and I don't believe they were ever logged in to on laptop B. Did the password change on B trigger everyone's accounts to log out? Or should I be worried about something going on?

To add, I got the alert that B was fully signed in, not attempted and triggered 2FA, so again I'm assuming that it was a just an app login on a trusted device. The location it showed is our location. When I had to log in to all the emails again on laptop A, it required me to do 2FA on all of them.

Gmail auto deleting one time codes after opening/expiring

Earlier I had a verification ode emailed to me. Received the email, typed in the code, everything was fine. Later I opened my email app and saw this email was missing. I searched for it and found it on the trash, along with another similar (but from a different website) email. Also weirdly just those two, even though I’ve gotten codes recently from other sites

While I get the point of this feature, I don’t care for it, and want all emails to stay in my inbox. I don’t see this set up as a filter in my settings; anyone know how to turn this option off?

Family plan question

I am migrating my personal email over to Proton and anticipate one day moving my family members over. Can I create free individual accounts for them now and later loop us all in to a paid family group, or do I have to initiate the family plan and then create the emails?

Downloading from iCloud.com to an external hard drive

I am trying to back up my photos, most of which live in iCloud, to an external hard drive. Most options I see seem too complicated, require using a third party, or require downloading originals to my Mac (which doesn’t have enough room).

Is there any reason this system won’t work:

- Log in to iCloud on my Mac browser

- Choose one month’s worth of photos/videos

- Download them, as unedited originals, pointing the download file to the external, in a folder labeled as that month.

This seems simple to me but am I missing something? Losing metadata? Losing photo quality? I did one month and it worked easily enough, though it’s a ZIP folder versus individual files.

If the only downside is it’s tedious that’s fine by me. I don’t want to deal with automations or third parties if if I can just do something like this. But I want to make sure I’m not missing something.

Edit to clarify: I am only doing this to have a backup should something happen to the iCloud Photos. I’m not deleting anything anywhere, nor do I intend to use the files on the hard drive (except for restoring should something catastrophic happen to my iCloud). This is purely to have an extra copy of what is in iCloud.

Moving Apple photos to external hard drive

All my photos live in iCloud and I want to make a backup on an external hard drive. I did the privacy takeout once but would like to get a second hard drive and do incremental backups going forward. For example, I want to go in each month and move the previous months photos over. How do I do this if

a) they’re in iCloud

b) I do not have enough room on my laptop to keep all originals

c) I want to keep the original dates/metadata of the photos (least concerning tbh, I’m willing to move them into dated folders if I have to)

d) I want the highest quality

I am highly tech illiterate so what is the simplest way to do this? I had hoped to drag and drop or export but that doesn’t seem to go along with concerns C and D. Moving the entire photo library seems complicated, epically since I want to maintain two external backups. See again, tech illiterate, I’m worried moving that around will break something

I know third party things like Parachute will get mentioned but is there really not a simpler option out there?

What causes Google to disable accounts due to photos?

I think we’re all seeing the posts often lately and I’m just curious. Like presumably millions of other parents, I have thousands of pictures of my kids backed up to Google and I’m sure plenty are from the bath, beach, etc. I’ve had no issue for several years and I’m wondering if there’s any common issue causing photos to get flagged.

- Is it suddenly uploading new photos (like a poster who uploaded photos from a family member’s hard drive) that Google doesn’t recognize?

- Is it only new photos that are being scanned, or do they retroactively scan old ones?

- Is it adult NSFW images getting uploaded and being flagged as a precaution?

My photos are through Apple and I use Google as a backup so I’m not worried about the photos themselves, but I’m debating if I should pull everything off to ensure my account overall stays safe. Is this truly a problem for innocent family photos that have been routinely backed up over time?

Upgrading from standard; best deal?

I’m new to Audible; I tried the 3 months for 99¢ plan and enjoyed it, and want to upgrade to premium plus. When I went to cancel standard I was offered 3 options:

  1. $7.49 for 3 months, then regular monthly price
  2. $85.99 for 12 credits up front, then regular yearly price
  3. $49.99 for 6 credits up front, then regular monthly price.

Is $85.99 the lowest price I can expect for 12 credits? Is there any benefit to #3 over #2, or is #2 always the best option?

edit: secondary question. Can you buy more credits/renew for another year early if we burn through the 12 quickly? Or do you just pay full price for any you buy after you use up the 12?

Google Photos as an iPhone backup?

I’m sure this gets asked often but I haven’t been able to find a clear answer: I use an iPhone, and the Photos app. I want to use Google Photos as a backup of these photos, so that if if something happens to the photos tied to Apple, I still have them. However my understanding is that if I sync them to Google, and then they are deleted in Google Photos, they are also deleted from Apple. How is this a backup? If my Google Photos are hacked and deleted, they’ll then be gone from Apple, so instead of two individual copies, I have zero. Is this correct or am I misunderstanding? I dont mind paying for the storage for them but I don’t want to delete from Google and it also delete from Apple. I want them to function independently. How do I use Google Photos this way, or is it not possible?

I have 450+ GB of photos stored in iCloud, and I know iCloud is not a true backup. Im using Google Photos as a backup but I don’t love having all my photos tied to accounts that could be hacked/corrupted/whatever. I did the thing where Apple sends you all your photos to download and put them on an external hard drive, but I don’t want to do that regularly. What can I do for “maintenance” backups a few times a year where I’m only adding new photos and not redownloading every single thing? My Mac doesn’t have enough storage to download everything, so I can’t use Time Machine.

What is the simplest solution to this? I would love to once a quarter back up the new photos to my external hard drive.

My circa 2014 Air is dying a slow and painful death and it’s time to replace it. I don’t use it very often, and only really for general internet browsing or documents, so I’m leaning toward the Neo. But I also have a lot of photos and music that seem to be bogging down this Air (though it’s all supposed to be in the cloud so no idea why), and since I made this one last 10 years I wonder if another Air with more memory/power would be worth the investment. And I think I bought this one as a refurb so I’m open to doing that again. I don’t mind spending more but also don’t want to waste money. I’m also more open to the Neo because my spouse has a newer Air that I could borrow if I needed more storage/power.

I’m an elder millenial, and I’m not techy. I just need an occasional Big Computer option and to be able to quickly find one of my 100k photos of my kids. Any suggestions on the best option?
