Complex feelings on TADC
Jax is my favorite character in TADC. I hate seeing fan art, and toys of this character. Probably more for person reasons, so this is gonna be a bit of a vent and also contain spoilers but at this point that's a good portion of the sub.
First, I don't like how the series has been so merchandized. I work at a department store and the toy isles often have lots of plushies of these characters. Which, for a show that's basically a psychological thriller, is already a bit.. off. But the thing that fucks with me most are the plushies of Jax, but one more than the rest. Jax in the maid outfit.
To me, the toyification of maid Jax feels incredibly gross. Jax it's a trans character who dies/abstracts before ever coming out. The few instances the show had of them breaking the gender binary was as an egg, and either in extreme duress or doing it to mock someone else (the finale). The toys I see of this Jax is always them being horified. It's their discomfort and humiliation made into a toy. That's just ick.
This is where I get a little meta, and I apologize. My only trans relative was a trans woman. She passed away a few years ago of an overdose, still in the closet. I knew about her truth because of some links in profiles which lead to a few online spaces where she existed as herself. That was hard for me. She was my cousin, but I never had an opportunity to be really close to her. Seeing Jax's story progress, it felt like someone who was constantly struggling not to loose their grip, until they let go. It reminds me of what happened to my cousin, the repression, the abuse, the drowning in silence. It's hard.
Jax's misery being made into a toy twists my stomach something awful. Almost as bad, seeing fan art of Jax. Her being fem, happy, healthier to be around. It's almost like an alternate timeline she exists in. It erases so much of Jax's real toxicity that makes them a relatable character. I was that person. I hated that person, as much as Jax hated himself, and I treated people just as bad then as Jax does in the Circus. Not glorifying being an asshole. People struggling and repressing things tend to be very toxic and awful people. Jax's story is relatable in a way that's raw, and painful. Reminds me of myself, and also of my cousin.
So seeing people making fan art of this character, in a way that the show never depicts them, feels odd. Feels like it's erasing a core part of Jax's character. Honestly, it makes me wish that Pomni was able to unabstract Jax just so that, for once, that show could have a happy outcome. Though it'd go against how they've framed abstraction overall, and would create its own issues but at least we'd have canon transfem Jax and it wouldnt undo the terrible shit they've done. It wouldn't absolve her, and she'd still need to grow, learn, and adjust to being a better person. Instead, we get a trans character who dies before their egg cracks. Who, in life, was a bitter self serving asshole that drove everyone away.
Even though they are my favorite character for personal reasons, I almost feel like Jax it's the worst but most honest reprentation of trans people. It's honest in the mental health outcomes of repression and isolation, and how it can doom a person. But it's the worst representation of us in the aspect that if any cis person watches, and connects those dots, I don't trust them to not assume all trans people are like Jax.
I don't know how to feel about this show. I love it. I hate it. It's made me think and feel more than any other show since coming out. For a lot of reasons, especially things like hopelessness. I feel like Jax is the epitome of all that. Idk what else to say but thanks for reading my rant <3
