Dumbphone for SMS

Hi! I need a second phone just for SMS and sometimes short income calls (for 2FA). I can´t use my Samsung S5610 anymore due to lack of 2G/3G carrier. So I started to search for 4G cheapest and dumbest phone possible, but a lot of users complain about unreliable network signal on something like Nokia 105 4G. Any recommendation? Thanks :)

Any news, rumors on a new Yamaha PSS keyboards?

It is already 7 years since last Yamaha PSS released (F30, A50, E30). A lot of new PSR released already, but no new PSS. Even Casio updated SA some time ago.

Are there any news or signs that new PSS keyboards will be released soon?

Eyes strain from SNES (snes9x) and Sega (BlastEm) emulators.

Hi! I have a laptop with good IPS screen and I can spend many hours without any problems with it. But when I tried to play using snes9x BlastEm emulators it have a huge impact on my eyes in a 15-20 minutes already. Like lowering eyesight, sore, blur and halo and I need to "recover" for an hour without screens after it.

I played on the consoles and CRT TV during my childhood for hours without any problems.

Is it something wrong with the emulators, like colors or refresh rate? Is it possible to improve the situation by changing settings or emulators?

22 inch closer or 24 inch further ?

Hi! I would like to buy a monitor to have a bigger screen compared to the laptop. My table can allow me to place a monitor on a distance (up to 1 meter).

Would it be better to have 24 (or even 27) inch display farther or 22 closer to me. What would be more comfortable for eyes? (IPS, 1080p)

Strange 0 bytes .oga files in trash every day (Samsung A15)

For the last few days I found a lot of (20-30) files named "_.oga" in a trash of My Files. I've searched that this is audio in ogg container but size is 0 bytes.

I don't have any apps for recording or audio converting installed.

What can generate it and what to do?

Is it a good idea to use Samsung S24 (DEX) instead of MiniPC

Hi! I am currently using MiniPC with Linux + Samsung A15.

I like to spend time with PC much more than with smartphone, because of the big screen and keyboard+mouse input. I still need the phone for some apps and portability.

Do you think S24 or S25 wired to monitor and key+mouse can replace my current PC and phone for casual use like browsing+some office?

What is the cons of this decision? Is it possible to use any powered USB-C hub with HDMI or should it be a special one? Any problems with smartphone working in DEX mode like overheat or battery degradation?

Shared use of smartphone / laptop by family members.

Back in the days when home computers cost a lot, many families used only one PC for everyone.

Nowadays the option to use several accounts (and 2 SiM slots) on one device are still present. also encrypted folders for personal files exist.

Possible scheme: 1 smartphone + 1 laptop for a family of 2.

Laptop can be used at home and smartphone outside. If both persons need to go in different places at the same time a simple "dumb" phone for a connection can be added.

Pros: lower cost (especially with a current growing memory prices), reduced electricity consumption, easier management of family archive (photos, music, etc), less digital impact on life.

Cons:  Not possible if both need similar devices at the same time (example: online job).

So what do you think of shared use of devices?

'Outsourcing' smartphone tasks to no-screen devices

I saw a lot of people try to replace their phones with other digital devices, so the screen time doesn't reduce, just spread.

Instead I tried to do as much things as possible on devices without screen or without devices at all.

Some examples:

Internet radio app -> AM/FM radio;

Audio player app -> speaker with inbuilt mp3 player;

Games app -> board and cards games;

Midi keyboard+virtual synth ->kalimba and electric piano;

News app -> newspapers;

eBooks -> audiobooks;

Youtube -> download audio and listen instead of watching;

Different small things like alarm clock, torch, calculator -> stand alone devices instead of phone .

Pros: reduced eyesore and headache , phone's battery now lasts almost 3 days, I can actually spend time with family members instead of constant watching on the phone's screen.

Cons: takes time to buy and setup everything

Simple device that support .opus audio format?

Hi! I am searching for a simple dumbphone or audio player with .opus support.

The vast majority support only mp3 and aac, but I can´t reconvert everything again :) Bluetooth for headphones would be a nice addition also. The closes I found are KaiOS phones, but they are slow and unnecessary bloated.

Can you please explain the naming and series of Xiaomi smartphones

Hi! I owned Xiaomi phone a long time ago (think it was Redmi 6A), since only used Samsung. Now maybe my next phone will be Xiaomi again, but I am confused with their naming. Like Xiaomi Redmi 15a and Xiaomi Redmi A7 Pro have almost identical specs but different price and number in the naming differ a lot. Why so and if you can please compare if possible with Samsung naming, as it would be easier to understand.

Should i avoid wood while choosing the first kalimba?

Hi! I would like to start playing on a kalimba. I owned and studied different music instruments during my life and wooden ones always have some issues (even while playing only at home), like clarinet cracked, guitar neck bent and so one. The most durable one I have is a plastic flute-recorder :)

The question is - for normal in-door use should i get an acrylic kalimba or wooden also be Ok?

And bonus question: 10 or 17 keys? Would 10 notes be enough to play a majority of kalimba songs or I need 17?

Casio SA-46 vs Casio SA-50 sound and build quality

Is Casio SA-50 a major update compared to SA-47?

I know that sound generator improved in SA-50 and octave buttons added but is it really all updates? Keyboard and internal speakers remained the same? Would it be better to go with Yamaha PSS-F30 instead?

Does Yamaha PSS-A50 and F30 have the same sound generator chip?

Hi! If I turn off touch response and will not apply FX (at A50) and connect both keyboards to internal speakers will they sound the same? And will they sound worse than entry level ´bigger´ keyboards from Yamaha (like PSR-262 or F52)?

8.7" 800x1340 PLS (Samsung Tab A11) or 6.7" 1080x2340 AMOLED (A17) ?

Hi! I am looking for the replacement of my current smartphone A15 with 6.5" AMOLED display.

Samsung Tab 11 or A17 (8.7" 800x1340 PLS vs 6.7" 1080x2340)? Both will be bigger than my current one, which is good, but different quality.

The price and hardware of both devices are similar. Which display would be better for casual browsing (mostly news and reddit reading) and youtube and wouldn´t be too heavy to use with one hand ?

USB with Debian 13.5.0 Integrity test failed.

Hi! I created a USB to install debian-13.5.0-amd64-netinst, but it failed during integrity check at Debian installer menu. Actions I have already done:

  1. Tested USB drive with sudo badblocks -wsv /dev/sda, re-created partition and reformatted (no errors)
  2. Tried another USB drive and USB ports (same result)
  3. Re-downloaded debian-13.5.0-amd64-netinst.iso from the official site and checked sha512 (no errors)
  4. Tried different ways to write iso on USB (dd command, bootqt, image writer)

What else can be done? If it shows an error in fimware-amd-graphics file can I still install OS on Intel system?

How safe is packages.debian.org ?

Hi. Is it safe to download and install .deb from packages.debian.org ?

Or would it be better to use AppImage from official app site instead?

Unfortunatelly there are very old versions for some apps in the depository and no Flatpak as well.
