8.7" 800x1340 PLS (Samsung Tab A11) or 6.7" 1080x2340 AMOLED (A17) ?

8.7" 800x1340 PLS (Samsung Tab A11) or 6.7" 1080x2340 AMOLED (A17) ?

Hi! I am looking for the replacement of my current smartphone A15 with 6.5" AMOLED display.

Samsung Tab 11 or A17 (8.7" 800x1340 PLS vs 6.7" 1080x2340)? Both will be bigger than my current one, which is good, but different quality.

The price and hardware of both devices are similar. Which display would be better for casual browsing (mostly news and reddit reading) and youtube and wouldn´t be too heavy to use with one hand ?

USB with Debian 13.5.0 Integrity test failed.

Hi! I created a USB to install debian-13.5.0-amd64-netinst, but it failed during integrity check at Debian installer menu. Actions I have already done:

  1. Tested USB drive with sudo badblocks -wsv /dev/sda, re-created partition and reformatted (no errors)
  2. Tried another USB drive and USB ports (same result)
  3. Re-downloaded debian-13.5.0-amd64-netinst.iso from the official site and checked sha512 (no errors)
  4. Tried different ways to write iso on USB (dd command, bootqt, image writer)

What else can be done? If it shows an error in fimware-amd-graphics file can I still install OS on Intel system?

How safe is packages.debian.org ?

Hi. Is it safe to download and install .deb from packages.debian.org ?

Or would it be better to use AppImage from official app site instead?

Unfortunatelly there are very old versions for some apps in the depository and no Flatpak as well.

"Undo 'cheat" on language courses

Hi! I don't know is it known thing, but I found an interesting "cheat". While doing language lessons., if it asks to write a SIMGLE word in sentense, it possible to long-press this empty space for word, choose 'undo' and it will insert correct word.

Is it possible to set-up Android TV box without internet.

Hi! I would like to make a home media player to listen to music and watch video stored on memory stick. After some searching the cheapest option I found can be Android box + HDMI monitor + external speakers.

I know that cheap no-name boxes are full of malware. But if I dont need streaming services, is it posible to use such box without internet connection at all, even during the initial set-up?

Hi. The price difference is about 70$ (A9 is cheaper). Should I pay more for A11 or A9 will be good enough for the next 2 years.

The only major differenece I care is OS support, but A9 should at least get Android 17 and security till the end of 2027.

Hi. Samsung states TFT as screen type for Tab A11 and A9, but it is just a general name . Is it actually a PLS (like in their older A series phones) or VA or TN? Does it use PWM for brightnes adjust? How about viewing angles, will it be enough to watch movies with another person on the same screen?
