Is this a good use of public money, considering the opportunity cost?
My points in pic #2 👉
As the title says, is this a good thing considering our tight financial position and opportunity cost?
Don’t you think this money could’ve been spent on something else like schools, roads or even to build a new prison (with the rise in youth violence)?
Also there are so many cases of government projects starting with some nice rhetoric but ends up being halted and remain that way. What makes this the exception
What is the austrian view on government making companies to switch from monthly rate to hourly rate?
So in 3rd world countries like mine - Sri Lanka, we are paid monthly. Therefore many companies manage to get work done from us without OT payments especially if you in executive level in marketing or IT.
It is quite hectic. In our language we say “getting work done by pushing you to the edge of death or having to work like dogs”.
You can get some allowance, but that is at the mercy of your superior.
How does austrian economics view the government intervening in labour markets by making companies to pay employees by the hour instead of monthly salary. If they do, the managers who make you work too much will surely ask employees to take a day off.
The key is, this benefits the average citizen like me directly. Tax payers not effected and I don’t see how it would discourage hiring like minimum wage laws.
I am bit new to this subject but lacks time to learn about this. If the law change, I might be able to :).
So Abeysinghe’s lawyers are bringing up his poor health for the court case. Do you think amending the law to make health status irrelevant will be a good thing? Answers from Lawyers or law students appreciated
As the title says, let’s say the law is amended where if defense brings up client’s poor health condition, the judge say “his health is irrelevant for his crimes”. Do you think that would be a good thing or a case of a good intention gone wrong kind of a thing?
Because in western countries it seems so many violent criminals are being released by judges because of their mental health. So, it seems removing mental health arguments seems a good move as an outsider.
But I like to hear from lawyers, because its easy for me to comment as an outsider. But you guys have valid arguments like its better 10 criminals go free than falsely imprisoning 01 good person.
news: Charith Abeysinghe’s lawyer has informed the court that he has already undergone three heart stent procedures and requires five more. The defence further stated that he is suffering from multiple serious health conditions typically associated with people in their 60s.

Indian vs Sri Lankan vs Nepalese Biriyani: What’s different and which one do you prefer?
Those who have tried all 3, or atleast 2, what are the differences you have experienced?
For me, the Sri Lankan version seems to have more flavour in the rice and the raita. But the Indian version is generous with the meat portion and the raita. Only tried one nepalese biriyani from a place recommended by many in my area. Sadly I didn’t enjoy it.
Ps: I’m Sri Lankan by the way
Instagram now automatically track live activities without asking for permission?
So I delete insta and downloaded it a week later. I do that a few times. Usually it asks “allow to track activities or Don’t allow”. But this time, it didn’t and when I checked setting, the track live activities option is already enabled.
How is this possible?
I feel like Fineanganofo would struggle at Test Level like Reece, but Morby will surely adapt to AB’s level
I’m not a pro and never played rugby. Just a canes fan and missed much of the SR matches.
What I’m saying is, I feel like Fineanganofo would not be able to adapt to test level intensity despite good SR form, similar to George bridge and Reece.
Feel like he is also one of those players that performs well when everything is going well but might struggle when tables turn.
Moorby on the other hand seems like AB material who manages to find a way to get involved and get something done even when its going bad.
What do you guys think?
Government laws and interventions that are good for wider society overall?
In one of Thomas Sowell’s book, he said making it compulsory to have vehicle insurance and limiting/banning the storage of petrol inside houses are good laws and benefits the overall population.
Even where I’m from (Sri Lanka) when we had a massive fuel crisis, the government used rationing system instead of the price mechanism (they did increase by 4x though). So far it worked, atleast reduced the queues and the chaos where some rich guys buy who had money bought so much in a short period of time leading to more shortages.
Likewise what are some government laws or interventions you would see as acceptable under Austrian economics?
Edit: In the insurance case, his argument is that a crash affects the driver as well as pedestrians or passengers in the other vehicle and the affected third parties will not be compensated for the damage by the driver.
In the petrol case also, its that when a fire occur, the explosion could spread to other neighbours due to the petrol
Unusual crawl tree graph/Site structure in a service website - Help me understand it
Just starting my DM career.
A friend asked me to do a small web/seo audit for their service business in london (customer go there and get it done). The business has only one physical location (Lets say location A).
But the site has a location tab saying Services in Location B,C,D,E (about 10 nearby locations). When I click each location, I go to a page exactly like the home page but the url is ourservice..com/service-in-location-B. Even in SERPs, its like “Business name | Services XYZ | location B”. Basically the wording is done sounds like they have branches in those places as well. The website is done by an agency.
But that “our location” tab is not in the header or navigation section. Its just their at the bottom/footer in a tiny text next to the “copyright 2026” part.
In the crawl tree graph, its home page —> locations —> and then gets divided to 10 different branches. Then stops. So by the time you get to level 3, its like a huge list / graph is too tall.
What is the reason for this? Is this some short cut used by the agency that made the website to boost the local SEO? And then how to solve this since the business they don’t actually have one in those places.
The Heineken and URC final were not competitive. Winner was obvious by the 2nd half. Hope it doesn’t happen on the super rugby final
Pretty disappointed with how the finals played out.
It didn’t feel like a final.
I like when my team win, but also I want it to be tighter so that both crowds will be at the edge of their seat for majority of the match
Like the 2021 Harlequins vs Exeter final, 2024 Leinster vs toulouse Heineken Final, 2024 URC glasgow vs bulls final.
How do Hurricanes players seem to have a support runners to always offload?
As the title says, during yesterday’s match against blues, whenever a canes player makes a linebreak, he seems to have someone inside or outside to make that offload. Fun fact is even the supporting players seems to have another support player to make a risky pass. The difference was clear compared to Blues even though they do so much tight carries
At the same time the canes also have enough numbers and players in position whenever they want to go wide
How do teams train to do that?
Im someone who never played rugby. Hence like to know to know how they level of skill is achieved
I play some social touch rugby 7pm - 8pm. Is it okay to swim 300m next day at 1pm?
I want to know is the rest period enough, which is like 14 hours if I sleep at 11pm. Or should I do swimming afternoon to make more room for recovery?
Theres lot of running on the footy day but no contact. So can the body handle that level of cardio / aerobic activities?
Today 7pm - 8pm touch rugby
Tomorrow - 1pm 300m swim
You are assigned to create a national fitness policy to make Sri Lankans fit and lean. What are the SL specific changes that needs to happen?
Majority of the advise we follow is the western style of fitness and their education. So majority of our gym instructors also follow that. Same might apply to those who studies sports science.
But I heard in a panel discussion where a doctor said that a mistake our doctors who studies abroad is they apply the same things here not considering the climate differences between Europe and Sri Lanka.
Likewise, since our carb intake is high, protein intake is low (due to high costs as well), climate is warmer and humid which makes you tire quickly, what are the country specific changes that needs to be done to make our people fit and lean?
Edit: and also, are they specific exercises we need to focus more on? Like more cardio vs strength straining
What are the small, subtle and off-the-ball stuff a player can do to be more useful in attack and defense?
Running hard lines regardless whether they pass it to you or not. I mean run - don’t stop the run at 80%. Just run to the point where you are not obstructing. ( Like Jordie barret’s aggressive dummy line that lead to De groot score in 2022 NZ vs Arg 2nd match - cos while the defenders had a prop infront of them, JB’s line made the ones infront of de groot focus on JB)
Run hard and taking an inside or outside step before contact (Like Caelan Doris and Sheehan)
Stepping away from defenders Torso, so its hard for them to tackle you just by their hands
Joining the blind side/open side and then overloading that side to make defenders second guest (Like Billy Vunipola presence make defenders just stand there without folding)
Making sure ball presentation to the 9 is good after getting tackled (Like Aldritt does - or how Ireland used “I” shaped body position for ball placement to balance SA’s aggressive counter rucks)
Or like, if you lack speed when defending, you study on how to be at the right spot to make the tackle or intercept (maybe like Ioane vs Byron Mcguigan, cos while tje former has the speed to recover from his mistake, the latter made up for it by being at the right spot - got this detail from wibble)
What else can a player do? Things that will always be applicable regardless of strategy or even when the strategy is poor, some tactics will work
I’m not a player. These are few I saw from watching squidge, wibble etc. I know the question seems too open ended, but really like to see some tips
Are skywalks the way forward for Colombo to increase walkability and reduce congestion?
I read a journal article about the congestion in Maharagama, where vendors and textile traders have filled the streets, leading to people go shopping and since vehicle also pass through, it causes a huge mess.
The feasible suggestion was making a “pedestrian overpass system”. This will separate foot traffic from vehicle traffic.
This overpass is a network - not a single bridge. It will connect the hot spots like commercial centres. To make it accessible, escalators and lifts will be used (I mean who likes stairs right)
What do you guys think?
Because changing existing road structures is difficult. So what if we improve the buildings there and attach the skywalks to them as shown in the image? So instead of making ground changes, we look up…like how we are building tall flats instead of making small houses in multiple spots?
This idea is partly inspired by Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands.
Sadly I cannot locate the file. Couldn’t even google it. But here are few direct excerpts from the document.
“From the decision matrix it was decided that a networked overpass will be the best solution out of the above solutions”
“A pedestrian overpass system can improve the traffic situation and realize the separation of people and vehicles”
In Sri Lankan school rugby, how come there are so many M_slim players? Asking from a talent perspective only.
Nothing against the over representation. I am asking totally from a merit perspective.
In teams like Trinity, Peters, Wesley and Pathana, there are so many M_slim players and they are talented as well. For example, you will often hear names from players like Zumri from Pathana, Althaf from trinity during matches.
Whats the reason behind this overrepresentation? and how is the culture promoting this?
When I was a kid, a friend told me m_slim people eat beef a lot, hence they have better fitness 😅. Is there a truth in this as well?
Sri Lankan Rice and curry by mom
Basmati rice and then dried fish tempered, bitter gourd, bean curry, dhal curry, cutlet (like falafel), pineapple curry and vegetable salad on middle
Eating rice and curry from a restaurant 5 days a week at work - how bad is it?
I’m working and for lunch I eat rice and curry from the nearby restaurant. But its a relatively small place and the food is very similar to a homemade one compared to a rice and curry from a place like Ricorn. I always avoid eating fried rice and kottu or parata etc.
But still how bad is it for the health in the long term?
Sri Lankan Rice and Curry by mom
Basmati rice and then from left - Dhal curry, egg omlette, pappadam (crackers), cabbage mallum (cabbag, grated coconut, pepper, salt, onion all thingy sliced), stir fried bitter gourd, Sprats (small dried fish tempered with onion, etc)
If a team has a huge lead with victory is inevitable, but the opposite team narrows it in the last 5-10 minutes,do coaches take it very seriously?
I mean a team gets a huge lead and the win is inevitable, so they sub many of their players after that huge lead and bring their bench. But in the last few minutes the opposite team gives 101% and narrow the gap.
In a situation like that, would the winning side’s coach brush it off as “oh its the bench - I did some wholesale changes…so nothing serious”, or like “ the losing team was playing for the losing bonus point..nothing to worry” or dismiss as “just turned off in the last few minutes, thats fine, we got the 80% right”
For example, in the canes vs blues match today, the hurricanes had a 33-7 gap, but later it ended as 47-26. But seems that could’ve ended as 40-33 also because the blues upped their intensity.
Another example is Eng vs Italy in 2024 with the score was like 24-21,where ENG was on front foot with 24-7 for like 70 minutes but italy closed it to 24-21. Based on the score, the match seems tight, but doesn’t reflect how good was ENG for 70 minutes. So again, would a coach slightly dismiss the narrowing of the scores?
Hope my question is clear.
