The meaning of Chuck Yeager's flight and the conclusion of The Right Stuff (1983). Spoilers if you haven't seen this 43-year-old movie.

The Right Stuff is one of my favorite movies, since childhood. A great film for airplane/space/history nerds. The Wikipedia article on the film's ending says the following about the movie's climax, Chuck Yeager's F-104 flight and ejection:

Though seriously burned after reaching the ground, Yeager gathers up his parachute and walks to the ambulance, which proves his worth.

Does anyone else read it this way? I feel like Yeager's "worth" in the film is only every questioned by himself; everyone else in the flight community holds him in high regard (in Tom Wolfe's book, he is practically a god).

On the contrary, I interpret the ending of the movie as the great passing of the torch — Yeager's F-104 flight has reached the very edge of space, he has seen the stars through the last thin remnant of the atmosphere, has pushed the envelope to its limit. The extent of what he and his fellow pilots can do has been found, and his time is over.

The sky now belongs to the astronauts, which is really driven home by the last few scenes: Yeager achieves his apex with no clearance, unofficial, with no witnesses, and only an ambulance and a friend are there to greet him when it's over, in the middle of nowhere.

Meanwhile, Gordo Cooper punches easily through the atmosphere and THE LIGHT OF HEAVEN LITERALLY SHINES UPON HIM as the world cheers him on and the narrator calls him the greatest pilot on Earth. Movie end.

I don't think Yeager's flight proved anything except his passing into history.

Do the little things first

My Legion Pro 5 16ACH6H was dead as a doornail, and I was able to get it back going with much input from u/Nord90 and reading some older posts on this subreddit. Likely culprit was a failed BGA causing the CPU to dislodge from its cradle, but a simple cleaning of the chips and reapplication of a healthy bead of Noctua thermal paste appears to have resulted in the necessary compression of the chip and my laptop is back in working order.

Don't throw your Legion Pro 5 out the window until you examine and re-paste the chips. The factory thermal paste was brittle and squeezed out everywhere. Sometimes, the simple fix works. Thanks u/Nord90.

Is there a master rebuild kit for LS engines with pressed piston wrist pins?

Howdy. I have a 2004 LS 4.8L on the stand, and it has pressed wrist pins instead of floating pins held in by locking collars. All the master rebuild kits I see come with pistons which I won't need and can't use, but the simple re-ring kits omit the oil pump, timing chain, and bolts. Does anyone offer a master kit for this style of pistons?
