I want to try working at os development, I have already written my os, what are my next steps?

Hi everyone!

I have become very passionate about OS development recently, and I've been wondering what steps I should take to land an OS dev role. I recently graduated, so I am fairly early in my career path and currently exploring my options. I wrote an OS from scratch for my bachelor's engineering thesis, which I think was a good start.

I would appreciate any advice or ideas!

We run DOOM on our OS we wrote during engineering studies - ALKOS

Hi everyone!

My team and I recently graduated and wanted to share our Bachelor's thesis turned hobby OS: ALKOS (named after the initials of our 3-person team). We had very little prior OS dev experience so it's been an awesome learing journey. Here's a gif of me playing doom on it

EU to US relocation: Where is the sweet spot for a big tech SWE regarding salary vs living costs, quality of life?

Hey everyone. I'm an EU software engineer working at Big Tech. I'm moving solo, I don't mind driving at all, and weather isn't a factor for me. I'm simply trying to find the best balance of a high tech salary, reasonable cost of living, and favorable taxes. Where is the actual sweet spot to build wealth right now as a SWE without sacrificing basic quality of life?

n53b30 issues

Hi guys,

I have a 2009 E90 330i with the N53B30 engine and I'm trying to figure out why the car is stuck in homogeneous mode. Before getting to the issue, here's a list of work that has already been done to the engine. The car currently has no fault codes and has never had since 30000km.

Parts replaced / work done:

- All 6 injectors replaced with index 11 injectors (about 40,000 km ago)

- New NGK spark plugs (correct ones)

- New Bosch ignition coils

- New valve cover

- New piston rings and refurbished cylinder head - no oil consumption

- New OEM water pump and thermostat

- New timing chain

- VANOS refurbished

- All intake seals replaced, from the throttle body to the intake ports

I currently have two issues, and I suspect they may be related:

  1. Sometimes the engine shakes during startup. It usually happens about 20 seconds after starting and then disappears.

  2. The engine never seems to switch into stratified mode and stays in homogeneous mode all the time.

Lambda values look very stable at idle. They stay close to 1.00 with fluctuations of around 0.01 and only occasionally 0.02.

At the moment I have three main suspects:

- DME/ECU issue - I'm considering updating the software, clearing everything, and resetting adaptations just to rule that out.

- Post-cat lambda sensors - sometimes both sensor voltages drop from around 0.7 V to 0.1 V. Bank 2 seems to do this more often. The voltage stays low for a second or two and then returns to normal.

- NOx sensor silent failure - no fault codes, but it is pretty old.

Before I start throwing more parts at the car, I'd appreciate any ideas Is there anything else that could prevent stratified operation without setting fault codes?

Thanks!

wheel ideas

Hi! I've been driving this 330i for a while now, and I absolutely love the car. I'm currently looking for a nice set of wheels and would really appreciate any recommendations. Photos of your setups would be more than welcome
