Scared of losing my degree...

I just need to vent somewhere because I've been carrying this anxiety for a long time.

I'm 31 and I had joined MBBS back in 2016. I passed all my MBBS exams and started my internship in 2022. I managed to complete around 2 months, but then I developed severe anxiety and depression and had to stop. I ended up taking treatment and what was supposed to be a break eventually became almost 4 years.

Now I'm finally trying to get back and finish what I started.

The State Medical Council has told me to pay the required fine and proceed with rejoining. My university has also told me to rejoin and complete the internship, but because of the unusually long gap there is still some confusion regarding the regulations and they may have to send my documents to NMC after I finish.

So technically I'm not rejected or anything. I'm actually being told to proceed.

But my brain keeps going:

"What if the college says no?"

"What if NMC says no later?"

"What if after spending so many years studying, I still don't get the degree?"

And honestly, that thought scares the shit out of me.

I'm 31 now. Most people from my batch have probably moved on with their lives, while I'm still trying to finish something I started almost a decade ago.

I also worry about what happens if MBBS doesn't work out. I don't need some crazy luxurious life. I just want a normal, comfortable life, hopefully upper-middle-class if possible. I already have a house and hopefully some family assets in the future, but I still need a career and income.

I've thought about government jobs, doing another degree, IT, business etc., but everything feels uncertain when you're starting over at 31.

I know objectively that my life wouldn't be "over" if I don't get the degree. But when you're actually sitting with this uncertainty, it feels like everything depends on this one thing.

Not really looking for legal advice here. I just wanted to put this somewhere and hear from people who may have gone through something similar.

Has anyone here had a major career or education setback in their late 20s or early 30s and managed to rebuild their life?

I could really use some perspective right now.

31 and possibly facing a complete career restart — what would you do?

I'm 31 and from Kerala. I joined MBBS in 2016, passed all my exams and started internship, but had to take a break due to severe anxiety/depression. The break eventually became almost 4 years.

I'm now trying to rejoin and complete the internship. KSMC and my university have told me to proceed, and the Principal has said the college has no objection to my rejoining subject to the applicable rules.

However, there is still some uncertainty about whether I'll ultimately be able to get the degree.

If things don't work out, I may have to start a completely new career at 31. I'm considering government jobs, another degree, IT, business, or possibly studying abroad and settling there.

I don't want a luxurious life. I just want a stable career, a comfortable life and financial security for my wife and myself.

If you were in my situation at 31, what career path would you realistically choose?

Legal advice sought: 2016 MBBS batch, 4-year internship gap and NMC regulations

I am looking for opinions from lawyers familiar with medical education law/NMC regulations.

I joined MBBS in Kerala in the 2016 batch and have passed all my professional MBBS examinations. I started compulsory internship and completed approximately 2 months, but had to discontinue because of severe anxiety/depression and underwent treatment. The interruption eventually became around 4 years.

I am now trying to rejoin and complete the remaining internship.

My State Medical Council (KSMC) has told me to pay the prescribed fine and proceed with rejoining. My college has asked me to meet the Principal for the required rejoining letter. KUHS has also told me to rejoin and complete the internship, but has said that after completion my documents may have to be forwarded to NMC because there is still some uncertainty regarding the applicable regulations.

I have been trying to understand the following legal issues:

Section 49/saving clause of the NMC Act: Does it protect students who were already pursuing MBBS before the NMC Act came into force from subsequently introduced course-completion requirements?

10-year completion limit: The 10-year limit was introduced after I joined MBBS. Can it retrospectively apply to a 2016 batch student when that limitation did not exist at the time of admission?

CRMI Regulations, 2021: Do these regulations apply to students admitted before 2019/NMC Act, particularly where the student had already passed all MBBS examinations and had commenced internship before taking a long medical leave?

Assuming, for argument's sake, that the 2-year internship completion requirement applies to my batch, is there any provision that says exceeding that period automatically results in permanent loss of eligibility for the MBBS degree, even if the student subsequently completes the entire remaining internship satisfactorily?

Are there any High Court/Supreme Court judgments specifically dealing with a pre-2019 MBBS student who passed all examinations but had a prolonged interruption during internship, rather than repeatedly failing examinations?

I am particularly interested in the legal distinction between cases such as Sachin & Others v. Union of India, where the students were admitted under the later regulatory framework, and cases involving students admitted before the relevant amendments.

I am not looking for reassurance; I would genuinely appreciate a legally grounded assessment of whether the regulations create an automatic bar in a situation like mine, and what remedies would potentially be available if the university/college/NMC ultimately refuses to allow completion or award the degree.

Thank you.

Feeling Like My Future Is Over

I don't really know why I'm writing this. Maybe I just need to get it off my chest.

I'm from a 2016 MBBS batch in India. I passed all my MBBS examinations and started my compulsory internship. After about two months, I developed severe anxiety and depression. It got so bad that I had to stop my internship and focus on treatment.

That break eventually became four years.

I'm 31 now.

Recently, I've been trying to get my life back on track. My State Medical Council has asked me to complete the formalities for rejoining, and my college has indicated they can take me back. But because of the long gap, I constantly worry that somewhere along the process someone will simply say, "No. You can't continue. You won't get your MBBS degree."

That fear has completely taken over my mind.

I keep reading court judgments, NMC regulations, and every document I can find. Every time I think I've found something reassuring, I find another judgment that makes me anxious again. It's become an obsession.

What scares me the most isn't just losing the degree. It's feeling like I wasted almost a decade of my life.

I keep thinking:

What if I never become a doctor?

Am I too old to start over at 31?

Will I ever have a stable career?

Will I be able to support my family?

Did I permanently ruin my future because I became ill?

I know there are people who have overcome much worse situations, but when you're in the middle of uncertainty, it's hard to think logically. Some days I'm optimistic. Other days I convince myself that everything is over.

I'm not really looking for legal advice in this post.

I just want to know...

Has anyone else here lost years because of illness or mental health, thought their career was over, and somehow found a way back?

Or if you're a doctor, what would you honestly think if you came across someone in my position?

I think I just need to hear from people who understand what it's like to feel that your entire future depends on one uncertain decision.

Thanks for reading.

Am I making the wrong decision for my father? Need some honest advice

Need some genuine advice from you guys.

My father (70) recently had a cervical spine fracture after a fall. The surgeon recommended surgery, but because of the cost and since he has no weakness or numbness, we've decided to try conservative management for now. He's been advised strict bed rest for 4 weeks with a cervical collar.

I'm honestly struggling with what the right thing to do is.

My parents want to stay at their own house, but my mother is also 70, not physically very strong, and I don't think she can manage him alone. My brother suggested shifting my father to his house after discharge. His wife is a nurse, there are more people around during the day, and it's closer to the hospital.

The problem is... I feel guilty.

A part of me feels like as a son, I should be with my father in our own house, even if it's difficult. If I let him stay at my brother's house, I keep wondering whether I'm taking the easier option for myself instead of doing what's right for him.

To make things more complicated, there's a good chance my MBBS internship may restart within a week after a long gap, and that means long hours and possibly night duties. My wife is supportive, but she also works, and I don't want to dump the entire responsibility on her either.

I honestly don't know if this guilt is justified or if I'm overthinking because everything has happened at once.

If you were in my place, what would you do? Would you prioritize your father's wish to stay in his own home, or choose the place where he'll probably get the best day-to-day care, even if that means he stays with my brother for a while?

Would really appreciate honest opinions.

Can NMC Refuse MBBS Degree After Internship Due to Delay Beyond 2 Years?

Hi everyone,

I am looking for advice from anyone familiar with MBBS regulations, NMC rules, or similar experiences.

I am from the 2016 MBBS batch and passed my Final MBBS exam in 2022. I started my compulsory internship (CRRI) but had to discontinue it due to serious health issues at that time. As a result, there has been a gap of around 4 years.

I recently approached my State Medical Council regarding rejoining. They reviewed my case, calculated the applicable fine, and informed me that I can obtain a fresh provisional registration and continue my internship after submitting the required documents from my college.

However, when I contacted my university, they told me that because my internship was not completed within the 2-year period mentioned in the CRMI Regulations 2021, NMC approval may be required before they can issue my final MBBS degree/certificate.

The university also mentioned that there are other students in similar situations whose cases are currently pending with NMC, and that none of them have received approval yet.

So my current situation seems to be:

I may be able to rejoin and complete my internship.

But there is no certainty that I will receive my final MBBS degree afterward because NMC approval may be required.

My questions are:

Does the CRMI Regulations, 2021 create an absolute bar on obtaining the degree if internship is not completed within 2 years?

If the State Medical Council permits rejoining and completion of internship, can NMC still refuse recognition solely because of the delay?

Has anyone here completed internship after a long gap and successfully obtained their degree?

Has anyone dealt with NMC approval for delayed internship completion?

If NMC eventually refuses approval, what options would remain?

I have already invested years into MBBS and am trying to make an informed decision before committing another year to internship.

Any advice, experiences, or legal insights would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Can NMC Refuse MBBS Degree After Internship Due to Delay Beyond 2 Years?

Hello everyone,

I am seeking legal guidance regarding a medical education issue.

I am from the 2016 MBBS batch and passed my Final MBBS examination in 2022. I had started my compulsory internship (CRRI) under provisional registration, but due to serious health-related issues at that time, I had to discontinue it. As a result, there has been a gap of approximately 4 years in my internship.

Recently, I approached my State Medical Council regarding rejoining. They reviewed my case, calculated the applicable fine, and informed me that I can obtain a fresh provisional registration and continue my internship after submitting the required documents from my college.

However, when I contacted my university, I was informed that since my internship was not completed within the 2-year period mentioned in the CRMI Regulations, 2021, NMC approval may be required before the university can issue my final MBBS degree/certificate. The university also mentioned that there are similar cases currently pending with NMC and that no approvals have been received yet.

My understanding at present is:

\- I may be allowed to rejoin and complete internship.

\- But there is uncertainty regarding issuance of the final MBBS degree because NMC approval may be required at a later stage.

I would be grateful for legal opinions on the following:

  1. Does the CRMI Regulations, 2021 automatically bar a student from obtaining the MBBS degree if internship is not completed within 2 years?

  2. If internship is completed later with the knowledge/permission of the State Medical Council and college, can NMC still refuse recognition solely because of the delay?

  3. Have there been any court cases where students obtained relief in similar circumstances involving delayed internship completion?

  4. Is there any legal mechanism to seek clarification or a decision from NMC before investing further time in completing the internship?

  5. If NMC ultimately refuses approval after internship completion, what remedies would generally be available?

I am only looking for legal guidance on the regulatory position and possible remedies. Any insights from lawyers familiar with education law, university matters, or medical regulation would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Anxious about rejoining internship

I am an MBBS student from the 2016 batch. I passed my final MBBS examination in 2022 and started internship with provisional registration. However, due to significant anxiety and depression at that time, I discontinued my internship and have been away for about 4 years.

I am now doing well, fully functional, and want to complete my internship and obtain my MBBS degree and registration.

Recently, I visited my State Medical Council office. The superintendent reviewed my case, checked my old provisional registration, calculated a penalty/fine for the break in internship, and asked me to bring a letter from my principal along with a request for rejoining. She also told me that after completing the formalities and paying the fine, I would be issued a fresh/second provisional registration which I could submit to my college to rejoin internship.

My concern is that the gap is quite long (around 4 years), and I am worried about possible obstacles from either the college or the council.

Has anyone here:

- Rejoined internship after a very long gap?

- Obtained a fresh provisional registration after internship interruption?

- Faced any issues with the principal issuing the required letter/NOC?

- Eventually completed internship and obtained permanent registration after a prolonged break?

I would be grateful to hear any similar experiences or guidance. Thank you.

Title: Can a Medical College or State Medical Council Refuse Rejoining of Internship After a Long Gap?

I am seeking legal guidance regarding MBBS internship completion.

I belong to the 2016 MBBS batch and passed final MBBS in 2022. I had started internship under provisional registration but had to discontinue it due to serious anxiety and depression. As a result, there has been a gap of approximately 4 years in my internship training.

I recently approached my State Medical Council. The superintendent examined my old provisional registration, calculated a penalty/fine for the interruption, and informed me that I should obtain a letter from my principal and submit a request for rejoining. I was further informed that after payment of the fine and completion of formalities, I would receive a fresh/second provisional registration and could continue my internship.

My questions are:

  1. If the Medical Council has indicated a pathway for rejoining, can the principal/medical college legally refuse to issue the required letter without valid reasons?

  2. Can the Medical Council later change its position and refuse rejoining after having directed me to pay the fine and submit documents?

  3. Are there any NMC regulations that absolutely prohibit completion of internship after such a long interruption?

  4. If either the college or council refuses, what legal remedies are generally available to a student in such a situation?

I am not seeking advice on the medical aspects of my past condition. I am only trying to understand my legal and regulatory position regarding completion of internship and eligibility for registration.

Any guidance from lawyers or people familiar with medical education regulations would be appreciated.

Anxious about internship rejoining

Hey everyone,

I’m a 2016 batch MBBS student from Kerala. I passed my final year in 2022 but had to take a 4-year gap during my internship due to severe anxiety and depression. I am now 30, married (my wife works a contract job), and currently unemployed. The pressure of my age and situation is weighing heavily on me.

I’m finally well and trying to rejoin. I recently visited the State Medical Council. The superintendent was helpful—she calculated a late fine of ₹38,000 and told me that once I pay it and bring a Request Letter and a Principal’s Rejoining Letter, they will issue my 2nd provisional registration so I can start working.

Even though the council gave me a clear pathway, my anxiety is spiraling with "what-ifs":

What if my Principal refuses to sign the rejoining letter? (She sounded fine on the phone, but I'm terrified to visit the office).

What if the council changes their mind and drags me into a harsh scrutiny hearing?

I keep reading about the NMC 2-year internship completion limit and panicking that my degree will be declared null and void, even though my 2016 batch should be exempt from the newer rules.

I am finding it incredibly hard to believe I can actually pull this off. Has anyone from the 2016 or older batches successfully returned after a long gap? How did your college handle the paperwork?

Any insight or reassurance would mean the world. Thanks.
