My Lync/Love as Laughter collection so far

Only people Ive met who know about this band are typically modest mouse fans so I figured it’d be good to share here, I plan to collect everything Sam Jayne put out at some point, really on the edge of my seat looking for his early cassettes and the Thru the past and brightly CD.

The proposition

Even 30 years into his career Lou was still on point lyrically especially with this one “even a stripper needs her red tasseled suit, we were meant to be”

I’m really hoping something comes of this whole situation

Im not gonna enjoy listening to this band half as much if they don’t find a swift replacement, I’m not gonna wanna go see them anymore, it’s gonna force me to reassess Isaac’s allegations in a light I’d much rather not, thats a shadow that already hangs darkly over his legacy and this will make it worse for a lot of people.

Lou was fucking up so bad with Rock and Roll Heart

I love all of it but I gotta admit this is probably his worst album due to songs like, banging on my drum, follow the leader, claim to fame, rock and roll heart, I like a lot of it but he could’ve done a lot better, Crazy to think of how good a lot of his solo stuff would’ve been if he just kept his old band.

Strangers to Ourselves is getting better everytime

The way the songs transition into each other is great, as well as Isaac’s lyrics being on point (in my opinion). I feel like people get oddly close minded with artists for no reason, I am just as guilty of this as anyone, but this time around I’m really seeing the beauty in this album, the arrangements feel fresh and like the proper direction for them to go after We Were Dead. I think Isaac’s discography shows his growth and maturity with each album. I compare it to Lou Reed in my mind, Lou was making what most people would call hot garbage majority of the time, but if you get really into it you can enjoy it in all its weirdness.

You may hate me, but I got greedy and got another signature from Isaac

Made a homemade tape of the original sad sappy sucker recordings and he signed it “Happy Hacky Fuckr” I am from issaquah and their music is absolutely essential to me, words cant explain how meaningful it was to have a good interaction with one of my heroes and talk about our hometown. We talked about Tom Waits Rain Dogs, Karp, Pink Floyd, Love As Laughter and Sparklehorse as well. Nothing could ruin my high right now.

Oh no your not hardcore, unless you live hardcore

Some of the best indie hardcore music I’ve ever heard absolute classics for people who like modest mouse I’d highly recommend all these bands

tape recorders

Im trying to record a couple mixtapes for myself and tested it out with a pretty lofi demo and ended up with some scratching noise on the tape, what can I do to the tape recorder to fix this issue.

Using a Hitachi TRQ-289 Portable Cassette Recorder, I understand these are not highly regarded or anything so if you have any recommendations for a better machine I’d appreciate that too.

What are your top ten albums of the 90’s, grunge or not

Mine are as follows

  1. Lonesome crowded west - modest mouse
  2. 1990 - Daniel Johnston
  3. Exile in Guyville - Liz Phair
  4. Either/Or - Elliott Smith
  5. Ride of me - PJ Harvey
  6. Above - Mad Season
  7. Bonsai Superstar - Brainiac
  8. Incesticide - Nirvana
  9. Set the Twilight Reeling - Lou Reed
  10. Cure for Pain - Morphine

Edit: I am vetoing Insecticide because I forgot about “These are not fall colors” by the legendary Lync! If you have not heard this Olympia hardcore indie band that eventually became the lofi act love as laughter by Isaac Brock bff may he rest in peace Sam fucking Jayne. They have only one album on streaming but you can find their other recordings places like bandcamp and YouTube

This Reddit has more trolls than any other. I like insecticide, Kurt Cobain himself never thought anyone gave it the time of day, fuck you to anyone who has a problem with me liking that compilation album, it’s the best Nirvana album in my own personal opinion, I’m sorry I’ve outgrown the other 3 albums by one of my top ten favorite bands of all time from listening to them repetitively for the majority of my life.

People on this Reddit need to stop telling people the music they like isn’t grunge.

It’s so fucking cringey whenever I see someone posting the albums they like and someone is always in the comments going “erm actually sToNe tEmPle PiLotS aRenT gRuNgE” I rarely see people ask, and defining a band as grunge is limiting and often untrue. Treepeople played among the grunge scene as did dinosaur jr. These are not grunge bands though, Nirvana is a punk band through and through. Grunge may be a scene that came out of Seattle in the 80s but scenes grow and become trendy quickly and to deny that, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice In Chains had a similar sound that influenced other bands to do something that was also similar is bonkers. It’s just cringe and takes the fun out of this. Most of you who claim to be “from Seattle” and were “actually there” I highly doubt. Blind Melon and Stone Temple Pilots, and Bush and honestly any other band that sounds like the 3 I named I don’t care if you call grunge cause they belong in the conversation, its also a bullshit term that magazines picked up and before that it was just a word punks were using. If it’s not a genre than it’s a meaningless label

Edit: I’m convinced most of you haven’t listened to much “alternative rock” from the 90s that wasn’t shoved down your throat by mainstream media.

Smashing pumpkins is also pop rock.

Grunge is just mainstream 90s rock or a punk band from Washington, grunge was not the first scene to want to be separated from the hair metal, that is not a distinct thing that Seattle bands only did.

Anyone ever use one of these?

Looking for a cheap working option at the moment but don’t wanna get screwed by a new player.

Love as Laughter

Has anyone here listened to “Thru the Past, Brightly” I am mind blown by this record,

Edit: the guy who started this band Sam Jayne did it as a side project to his emo/post-hardcore band Lync, I guess it’s not really outsider music just some of the best diy I’ve heard in quite awhile and very out there compared to what he did before, which is also amazing, Lync is a great band.

Was anyone at the 6/12 show?

It says they played an unknown cover and was curious if anyone remembers what it was
