I’m desperate for help.

I’m possibly an idiot. Not sure. But I’d been using bona floor polish on my hardwood floors for a couple of yrs. And recently the floors have a film or buildup of some sort. They’re dull, and streaky and lots of smudges. I can’t get them clean. When I wash them using the bona cleaner I get massive streaks, and film and blotchy look. They don’t look clean or shiny. Hard to see what I’m talking about in the pics. Someone online suggested the Bona polish remover, but said you have to do it in small sections in your hands and knees. I’m a senior and can’t do that due to shoulder injury, back issues etc. but I can’t leave the floors with this film buildup. I’m assuming the buildup is from the Bona polish. But I don’t really know. I don’t want damage my floors or lose the original finish. Any suggestions on how to remove the buildup using a mop or is there a machine that can do it without damaging. Or are there companies that can do this without sanding and stripping away my original finish? I’m in Toronto, Ontario.

Musty smell comes back every year in my family room

I have a two storey house, with a walkout basement. Every summer I get a musty smell in my family room that stays til fall. I can’t figure out what’s causing it. All the furniture has been replaced over the past few yrs. There’s no carpet. No pets in the house. The smell only comes in the family room. That room has a a gas fireplace, that never gets used. A big window. And it’s directly above the furnace room which is in the basement. There’s no smell in the furnace room. I’ve had the ducts cleaned. Had the chimney cleaned. Hardwood floors are only 5 yrs old. In excellent condition. Every summer I look for answers on what could be causing this and nobody can give me answers. Any ideas?

How to make friends over 50 in GTA

It’s hard to make friends after 50. I’m talking about true, connected, friendships. There’s lots of seniors groups but it’s just groups of seniors who go out to lunch once a month. None of them actually build friendships one on one.

Would you live with a senior?

My partner (common law) and I are seniors, gta. He’s 75, I’m 60. He has two grown kids from a previous marriage, I don’t have any kids. His kids don’t really have much of a relationship with me. They’re not kind people. I try to be polite and cordial but keep my distance.
I think a lot about my future as I get older. If my partner goes first I’ll be all alone in life. I’ll grow old alone and will likely die alone. I’ve been financially secure. House paid off, and I likely won’t be able to spend all my money in my lifetime. I don’t have anyone to leave my estate to. And I think about the possibility of later in life having a young couple who don’t own a home, move in with me as renters, and I’d pay them to take care of me and my property. And if it all worked out and we all grew to love each other I’d leave my estate to them.
It would be my way of giving a young couple a good start in life. They’d learn compassion and respect for the elderly. I’d get the safe care I need. And I’d feel good that the person who was there for me at the most vulnerable time in my life inherited my estate.

Now to my question. If you’re a young person, could you see yourself doing something like that? What would be your concerns?

If you’re not a young person, what advice would you have for me or a young person considering such a scenario.

I’m just playing this out in my head to see if it would be a rational thing to consider later in life.

Has anyone cut hole in brick to vent a portable AC?

I have a 2 storey house, Toronto. The basement and main floor are always freezing when central air is on. But the upstairs bedrooms are suffocating. I can’t vent portable ac out the bedroom windows because they face the street and it looks horrible in the neighbourhood, and the windows are crank outward windows, none of the kits work. I’m frustrated. I wondered if it would be feasible to have someone cut a hole through the wall in each bedroom, and cut out the brick (6” hole) and vent a portable ac out. And how would I close it up in winter.

I looked into mini splits but they gave me prices of 10k.

Struggling to understand lenses

I’ve been wearing progressive glasses for two years, but honestly I don’t have knowledge of what I’m buying or wearing and I’m trying to educate myself more because I’m ready to buy my next pair.

How important is the quality of lens? And what is different about cheap lens and brand name lens?

I always have trouble finding frames that I like. One place told me they can replace the lens in my current frames on site while I wait so I’m not without my glasses for two weeks. It was the only place that told me they can do that. Is this a legit thing?

How long does a typical pair of frames usually last? The ones I have now are two yrs old. I don’t want to buy new lens for old frames if these frames will fall apart 6 months down the road. It’s jimmy choo frames, not sure if that’s good quality or not.

I also have a problem with my current lens that when I’m driving and look over my shoulder I find I’m not seeing out of my peripheral vision very well. Also when I’m using the laptop, peripheral vision is not good. They told me I can buy higher quality lens that will give me wider view and eradicate this problem. Is this a sales gimmick or legit?

Consider me an idiot. I have some questions. My house is 2 storey, basement, main floor, upstairs. 2800 sq.ft. I currently have central AC and gas furnace. Main floor and basement are always freezing in summer and the bedrooms upstairs never get cool enough to be even bearable.

  1. Do heat pumps use existing furnace duct work? Or are heat pumps ductless?
  2. Are heat pumps and mini splits the same thing?
  3. I have a 2 storey house, the 4 upstairs bedrooms never get cool enough in summer, main floor is freezing in order to get the upstairs even bearable. Can a heat pump installed upstairs cool down all 4 bedrooms? Is one heat pump needed in each bedroom? Or does one heat pump service multiple rooms?
  4. I’ve heard a lot of people say their heat pump breaks down a lot, and they can’t find repair techs very easily, etc. is this a common problem, or is it brand related? I stayed at an Airbnb for a month last summer while on vacation and it had a heat pump, it broke down 3 times in a month. The host said the unit was only 1.5 yrs old.
