B.J. Smith – Dedications To The Greats (Dubs & Reworks) — OUT NOW

B.J. Smith – Dedications To The Greats (Dubs & Reworks) — OUT NOW

A new chapter in B.J. Smith’s long-running Dedications To The Greats series on NuNorthern Soul.

Wrekin’ Havoc take on B.J.’s versions of Outkast’s Hey Ya and Prototype, turning them into low-slung, dubbed-out dancefloor excursions, while Estonia’s Roots Artefact goes deeper with two spacious Dub Earth versions of Don’t Be Cruel.

The early DJ feedback has been lovely:

“4 excellent mixes, the Dub Earth versions are especially lovely” — Nick Warren

“Loving both of the dubs, deep, psychedelic and horizontal, when the killer conga lines kick in totally works for me!” — Jason Boardman

“Dub delights!” — Bill Brewster

It’s always interesting hearing what happens when you hand familiar material over to producers with a completely different perspective, and these four versions take B.J.’s originals into some very different places.

Available now on Bandcamp and across the usual digital platforms:

Would love to hear which version people are feeling.

Balaphonic – Organic Matters | Brazilian rhythms, jazz, Balearic, dub & deep house

Hi all, I run the UK label NuNorthern Soul and wanted to share our latest release, Organic Matters by Balaphonic, aka producer, DJ and percussionist Danny Ward (Moodymanc).

It’s a six-track release bringing together Brazilian and Afro-Cuban rhythms, jazz, Balearic grooves, dub and deeper electronic sounds, with a strong emphasis on live instrumentation.

There are some great collaborations across the record too, including Brazilian jazz legend Flora Purim & Diana Moreira-Purim, Robin Dewhurst, Balearadelica and Katya Gabeli.

If that combination sounds like your thing, you can listen, stream, buy or find the vinyl here:

Would genuinely be interested to hear what tracks people connect with.

A little Sunday favour por favor

The Mondo Love & Betrayal debut album lands on 11th September via NuNorthern Soul, and if you’re planning on listening, a pre-save on Spotify or Apple Music would be massively appreciated.

It might seem like a small thing, but those early pre-saves really do help get the algorithms working and give the album a better chance of reaching more people when it’s released.

You can also pre-order the vinyl now — standard black vinyl direct from NuNorthern Soul Bandcamp, which will also be available through your local record shops and stores, or the limited clear vinyl edition exclusive to Rough Trade.

And for anyone in the Nottingham area, there’s a free Rough Trade Nottingham in-store Q&A + DJ set on 18th September.

Everything — pre-save, vinyl pre-orders and Nottingham in-store details — is here:

https://nunorthernsoul.lsnto.me/nunsmlblppresave

If vinyl is your thing, that’s great, but please hit one of those streaming pre-save buttons and help us out.

Gracias x

George Solar – Dub-influenced Balearic soundscapes from Ibiza

Thought I'd introduce an artist who deserves a bit more attention from dub fans.

George Solar is an Ibiza-based producer, percussionist and DJ whose music sits somewhere between Balearic, ambient, downtempo and dub. Rather than making traditional roots or steppers, his productions borrow heavily from dub's sense of space, echo, restraint and deep low-end, creating music that's equally at home at sunset, on headphones or through a good sound system.

His catalogue includes the Los Rayos in Dub album, featuring versions from Dubvisionist, Chris Coco, Ken Fan, Beach Messiah and Jin Yerei, alongside the recent Moonbeams in Dub remix series, which continues that dubwise approach with fresh interpretations from a range of producers.

If you're into artists like Rhythm & Sound, Dub Syndicate, Gaudi, Ott, Deepchord or anything that explores the more atmospheric side of dub, you might find something to enjoy here.

Bandcamp:
https://george-solar.bandcamp.com/music

I'd be interested to hear what other people in this sub think about this more Balearic, ambient approach to dub.

George Solar – Moonbeams In Dub Part Two [Balearic / Dub / Ambient] – Out Now

George Solar's Moonbeams In Dub Part Two is out now.

The second instalment in the remix series sees three producers take George Solar's beautifully atmospheric compositions into fresh dub territory, each bringing their own distinctive style while staying true to the warmth and depth of the original album.

Featuring:
• Dubvisionist – Medialuna
• Razoof – Moonbeams
• Roots Artefact – Lunaticotina

If you're into Balearic, downtempo, dub, ambient, chillout, Music For Dreams, Café del Mar, Chris Coco, or the deeper side of electronic music, this might be worth your time.

Listen on your preferred platform:
https://nunorthernsoul.lsnto.me/nuns081

Would love to hear which remix is your favourite.

Lonely Deckchair – Debut Album Out Now

https://preview.redd.it/5n3e82jfy4fh1.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=d56e2409af1c774e641d1b8ca1e706f252440526

I'm really pleased to finally share the debut album from Lonely Deckchair, out today on NuNorthern Soul.

Inspired by childhood summers in Aguadulce on Spain's southern coast, it's an album about memory, place and the passing of time. Musically it moves between ambient textures, Balearic rhythms and understated electronic grooves, with reversed guitars, field recordings and warm analogue synths creating a genuinely immersive listen.

It's already picked up support from DJs including Nick Warren, Bill Brewster, Max Essa, Coyote, Pete Herbert and Andy Wilson, alongside a lovely review from Ban Ban Ton Ton.

If artists like Boards of Canada, Marconi Union, Penguin Cafe Orchestra or the more reflective side of Balearic music are your thing, I'd love to know what you think.

You can stream it, buy the vinyl, download it or find your preferred retailer here:

https://nunorthernsoul.lsnto.me/nunsldlp001

Thanks for taking a listen.

Our next NuNorthern Soul release is almost here – Lonely Deckchair (FFO: Balearic, ambient, downtempo)

Hi everyone,

I run the independent UK label NuNorthern Soul, and on 24 July we're releasing a new album by Lonely Deckchair that I thought might appeal to people here.

The album blends Balearic, ambient and downtempo sounds with gentle grooves and field recordings, inspired by childhood memories, family and revisiting places that have shaped your life. It's reflective without being melancholy, and hopefully one of those records that works equally well on headphones, at sunset or during a long drive.

We're also doing a couple of events before release:

22 July – an online Bandcamp Listening Session where we'll play the album in full and chat about how it came together.
https://lonelydeckchair.bandcamp.com/merch/lonely-deckchair-listening-session

Apple Stump Records (Nantwich, UK) – the in-store event has sold out, but they'll have plenty of vinyl available on the day, with Lonely Deckchair DJing and signing copies.
https://www.applestumprecords.com/event-details/lonely-deckchair-instore

If you'd like to hear it or pre-order a copy, here's the Bandcamp page:
https://lonelydeckchair.bandcamp.com/album/lonely-deckchair

The album will also be available from independent record shops, online vinyl retailers and all major streaming platforms from 24 July.

Thanks for letting me share it here. Happy to answer any questions about the album, the artist or the label.

Recorded my sunset session at Hostal La Torre, Ibiza yesterday!

I played the sunset session at Hostal La Torre yesterday and recorded the full thing. It starts gently and properly coastal, then slowly works its way through dub, ambient-leaning Balearica, odd little left turns, some familiar voices and eventually a bit of Italian pop vibes, and wonky disco .

There is new music in there from George Solar, Lonely Deckchair, Visions Of Light and Balaphonic, alongside Pacific Coliseum, Chris Coco, Jura Soundsystem, Coyote, Pet Shop Boys, Sade, SAULT, Jean Carn and plenty more.

Hope some of you enjoy the selections.

Eleven releases across Balearic, ambient, dub, leftfield house and electronic pop, featuring Visions of Light, Perth Lewis, Mondo Love & Betrayal, Coyote, Sasha Foam, George Solar, Roots Artefact and more.

Roots Artefact Interview I NuNorthern Soul Artist Q&A

NuNorthern Soul has just released Rocking Boat EP by Roots Artefact, the project of Tallinn-based producer Saimon.

It’s a six-track EP sitting somewhere between dub, reggae-rooted production, downtempo, Balearic warmth and spacious, effects-heavy sound design. Steady basslines, crisp drums, electric piano, guitar touches, coastal textures and plenty of delay/reverb throughout.

Saimon comes from a deep reggae and dub background, and you can really hear that foundation in the way the tracks are built. It’s not polished club music, more a warm, rolling, dubwise listen for slow afternoons, Sunday mornings, coastal walks, or those moments when you want something with weight but not too much pressure.

To go with the release, we also did a Q&A with Saimon about Tallinn studio life, King Tubby, dub culture, and how his sound found its way into the NuNorthern Soul world.

Listen / buy here:
https://nunorthernsoul.lsnto.me/nuns078

Would love to know what people think, especially anyone into dub, Balearic, downtempo or reggae-influenced electronic music.

Phat Phil Cooper explore The Other Side of the Island.

Phat Phil Cooper heads out for another local walk on the NuNorthern Soul vlog, taking a route through the port of Ibiza and following the coastline towards the lighthouse.

Along the way, Phil takes in a few street art spots dotted around the route, adding another layer to this local wander through the harbour, backstreets and lesser-seen corners of the town.

From the lighthouse, the walk continues up to the old gun pits, with views looking back across the port, Talamanca and the surrounding coastline. It’s a slower, more local side of Ibiza — away from the obvious postcard version of the island — taking in the history, the views, the sea air and a few thoughts along the way.

Part walk, part island diary, part Balearic wander, this episode is another glimpse into Phil’s life on Ibiza and the places that sit just beyond the usual tourist trail.

The Other Side of the Ib iza I Dalt Vila to the Cathedral & Beyond

Phat Phil keeps things local in this latest vlog, taking a walk up through Dalt Vila, Ibiza’s historic old town, and heading all the way to the Cathedral at the top.

From there, he takes in the incredible views across Ibiza Town, Figueretes and out towards Formentera, with another sweep of the island looking towards the airport and the Playa d’en Bossa skyline, where venues like Ushuaïa sit in the background.

Part of The Other Side of the Island series, this is a simple local wander through familiar streets, historic corners and everyday Ibiza — a reminder that some of the best views and moments are right on the doorstep.

The Other Side of the Island I Lighthouse to Abandoned Hotel & Street Art I Ibiza

I headed out on a slower walk along Ibiza’s north coast recently, following the Crystal Coast trail near Portinatx. The route shifts between rugged cliffs, open sea views and quieter inland paths, and it really shows a side of the island that feels miles away from the usual Ibiza stereotypes.

Along the way I stopped at Faro de Punta Moscarter — the tallest lighthouse in the Balearics — sitting right on the edge of the island, then passed through Cala d’en Serra and the abandoned hotel there, now layered in street art and graffiti. Ibiza has this strange balance sometimes… raw nature, forgotten spaces and creative energy all existing together naturally.

No real agenda, no rush, just walking and taking it in. It reminded me how much there is to the island beyond the surface-level image people usually associate with it.
