Potential alternative career options

I’ve been doing research on other roles that a UXR can pivot into within tech and wouldn’t require a ton of retraining/education. I’m curious if anyone else has made the pivot to one of these roles or is also considering it?

- Presales (this seems like half discovery research)
- CS (still talking to customers but doing a bit more problem solving)
- PM (probably the most natural pivot but the hardest to break into)
- Product Ops
- Product Strategy

As much as I would love to be a UXR forever I think it important to be realistic about the current job market.

Have any UXRs transitioned to pre-sales?

It seems like non-technical pre-sales roles have a lot of overlap with UXR. Has anyone moved into a pre-sale role? If so, how did you do it? And how are you liking the work?

Does anyone come from a product research background?

I’ve worked in product research for a B2B Saas company for the past 8 years. Has anyone here made the transition to pre-sales with a similar background? The discovery piece of the role seems inherently similar to what I’m doing now but I am lacking the technical knowledge needed for certain companies.

I would ask people at my company but tbh the ones at my job are insanely technical.

Thank you!

Leftover beer from my wedding

I’m chilling outside of Richmond and Armitage with a ton of leftover unopened beers if anyone wants to swing by. My husband and I don’t drink but have a ton leftover from our wedding.

EDIT: EVERYTHING IS GONE! A lovely neighbor who’s having their bachelor party this weekend took the rest!

Advocating for lowering springs for core and obliques

I’m 100+ classes in and was really struggling with proper form for obliques specifically. I also have moderate scoliosis so some things are just wonky for me in general but I realized that I just couldn’t maintain form with 50+ springs so I backed down to under 25 and now my form is so much better and I’m not getting weird lower back pain or nearly as much tension in my traps. Plus I’m now actually feeling the exercises where I’m supposed to.

So just a PSA that if you’re struggling to engage your core and keep your form that your spring load might be too high regardless of the number of classes you’ve taken.

Zero ego in doing what’s best for you!

Am I crazy or are there WAY more cancellations/long delays lately?

I’ve been flying exclusively with United for the past 3 years and I’ve always spoken really highly of them (O’hare is my home base).

I take about 25 flights per year and until this spring I might have had an hour or two delay here or there but pretty much every round trip flight now has at least either one leg straight up canceled or one leg severely delayed (4+ hours).

Did the quality go down? Is it just the season? It’s been so badly lately and I’m flying between major cities every time.

I just don’t understand why it’s been hell lately every time I travel.

I grew up in poverty and now I’m scared my money isn’t enough

I’m 33 years old and have $800,000 invested and another $120,000 set aside in a high yield saving account for a down payment/emergency fund.

I work in tech and it’s just so volatile that I’m constantly afraid of being laid off at any minute. In an ideal world I would want to retire at 57. Which would put me at 3.2 - 3.5 million at retirement with 6-7% returns but part of me just doesn’t feel like it’s enough.

Am I being crazy in thinking this isn’t enough and that I need to keep contributing?

My current expenses are around $6,000 per month in a medium to high cost to living city and my partner and I are planning to have one child. So daycare and then college costs eventually.

I know it’s so pricey but paying for unlimited is one of the best investments I’ve ever made in myself.

My fiancé was asking me about the cost of my unlimited solidcore membership the other day.

He’s just a boy haha so he was like oh how much is it a month? “Is it $100?” No haha “Is it $200?!?” Still no haha “is it $300?!?!?!” Yes….

I know it’s insanely expensive but it’s one of the few things I buy for myself that I absolutely love. Plus I go 4-5 times a week so I feel like I’m getting my money’s worth.

Does anyone else feel this way? (Also yes I know it’s extremely privileged to be able to afford it! I work hard for my money!)

If you were laid off and found a new position how long did it take you to find a new role and did you have to take a pay cut?

I’m really worried that if I’m laid off that A. I’ll never be able to find a UXR job again and B. That if I do the salary with be a dramatic drop.

I’m currently a Principal UXR in SaaS with 7 years of experience.

33F so close.

I want to quit tech so badly but I’m trying to wait until I have $1,000,000 invested. About $100,00 of this is in a HYSA to buy a home later this year.

I’ve spent 3 months interviewing for a UXR role just to be told they don’t want a UXR after all….

Like why are you wasting my time??? I had 6 rounds of interviews and was supposed to have a “second” final round interview tomorrow. I’m done with UXR after this I’m just convinced the jobs aren’t there anymore.

Those of you who have left tech, where did you go?

I’m just bidding my time until my net worth is high enough to leave tech. I’m curious though, if you’ve left tech, what are you doing now and are you enjoying it?

I’m in a really small team covering a ton of ground within my organization. Because we’re spread so thin and moving so fast, I often don’t feel like I get to influence product beyond handing over my findings and discussing recommendations before moving on the the next project.

So, how do you influence product at your companies? All idea are welcome!
