Bringing a 1970 Suburban back to life

New tires, tubes, rim strips, and brake pads so far. It’s cleaned up well for a bike that was discarded in a dumpster a couple of weeks ago (after and before shots)! Everything works great and now I need to take it on a nice long ride to celebrate!

Beautiful water snake in my garden after the rain (great camo)

Finally broke the 3 month dry spell here in southeastern Texas and she showed up in our flower bed. Seems to have an ulcer or something on her right side at the orange band but otherwise looks healthy and happy!

Rescued from a dumpster: his (1970) and hers (‘72) Suburbans

Cleaning up the men’s to ride as a grocery getter but my wife wants to keep the women’s as is for decoration in the garden.

More dumpster rescues: his (1970) and hers (‘72) Schwinn Suburbans

Campus green in color. Men’s is 5 speed and women’s is 10. Found along with the pair of Sears Tote Cycles and the JC Penney Lightweight. Cleaning up the men’s Schwinn to ride and my wife want to keep the women’s as is for decoration in the garden.

Today’s dumpster rescues (‘70s Sears Tote Cycles)

One appears to be from 1974 because it has an S on the Bendix Torpedo hub but the other one (pictured) doesn’t have a letter that I see. Any suggestions on getting the year for this one? Thinking they’ll clean up nice and will be fun little town or campground bikes.

UPS just delivered my tiles from Home Depot…in pieces

Customer service tells me they’ll send the driver back to collect them and issue me a refund though. So, there’s that.

Forgot how much fun this little S.O.B. is

Dug it out along with a couple of my guitars after 25 years of neglect in my closet. I traded an old Crate and a crossbow to a friend of mine for this back in ‘95. Life somehow got me sidetracked, but I’m back to strumming and loving every minute of it!

Dusting them off after 25 years and getting back into playing

Literally…they’re covered in dust after being neglected in my closet for far too long. Got both from a local pawn shop when I was in college in the ‘90s. Paid I think $150 for the Jackson and $75 for the Washburn (it came with the weird paint smears). Blah blah blah life got in the way and I haven’t picked up a guitar in a quarter century. Now I’ve got the time and peace of mind to dig back into playing them. Wish me luck!

Collected from trees in the park today

Went for a walk with my wife and came home with over $30 worth of lures to throw at bass and redfish. Guess the local hot color.

My folks (Frank and Estelle), summer of ‘56, upstate NY

They had met in Manhattan in April and were married in late November. Here they were courting, at my dad’s family farm. They were married just shy of 69 years before they both died a year ago.

Another dumpster rescue back in action (before and after)

Pulled this Huffy from a dumpster back in April and finally got around to working on it. Needed a new chain, tubes, tires, and brake pads and I also put on new pedals. Should probably swap out the cables too but I’m lazy. Nothing fancy but it’ll be fun on my local dirt roads and gravel and nobody will want to steal it (hopefully)!

Rescued another one from the dumpster

I can’t help myself. I see a dumpster bike and I grab it! This one needed a basic tuneup, a seat and seat post, and a chain (all from my parts bin). I also added a rack that I picked up on clearance at Walmart a while back. Nothing fancy, but a solid, fun bike for easy rides along my local country roads and in town. It joins my 2 other dumpster rescues that joined my stable since February.
Trash bikes need love too!

First trout trip of the year was a success

Been fishing this river on and off for many years. It’s taken awhile for me to find my way back. Never saw a trout rise to an insect on this stretch. They eat crawfish, sculpins, and chubs…and streamers.

Tune up run on my $15 non-Ozark Trail

Scored this older Specialized for $15 at my local thrift store. It needed some work so I threw on a fork from a donor bike, replaced some spokes and brake cables, and swapped the saddle for a $5 Goodwill find. Also replaced the pedals, brake levers, and added a rack. Took it for a 12 mile ride this morning and was smiling the whole time. Needed to tweak the rear derailleur and front wheel so I did that when I got home and now she’s ready for tomorrow’s ride.
Nothing beats that first ride on a newly rebuilt budget bike!

A couple of months ago I found this cheapo BSO in a dumpster and decided to give it a second chance at life. I enjoy making useless things useable and for $0.00, I’ve got a beater bike to play around with. It needed a front wheel, brake pads, a new seat, major cleaning, lube, and pedals. I scavenged all these and a cheap rack from a donor bike and my parts bin and took the Dumpmaster on its maiden voyage today. A picture-perfect 10 miles in rural Texas. It actually handled pretty well and I had a hell of a fun time. No, I wouldn’t take it on any long, isolated, off-road adventures, but for lazy cruises around the countryside, it’ll do just fine. Ride what ya got!!
