What’s it like living in a mews house?

I’ve been living in the UK for just over a year, and one thing I discovered after moving here is mews houses. I find them quite unique, and some of the mews streets in London look really beautiful.

What are they actually like to live in?

Are there any particular advantages or disadvantages compared with a normal flat or house? Anything I should be aware of before considering renting one?

London rents feel seriously inflated

I recently gave notice on my current flat because I’m planning to move.
The flat has now been listed again on the property websites, and the asking rent really surprised me.
When I moved in about a year ago, the rent was around £3,000 per month. Now it’s being advertised for £3,900.
Seeing that made me think that a lot of the prices currently listed on property websites may be heavily inflated as well.

Driving in London so difficult

I've been driving in London for a while now, and I still find it incredibly difficult.

The roads seem so confusing. Suddenly it's a one-way street, then you're on an incredibly narrow road with traffic going both ways, then the lanes suddenly become much narrower... It feels like you have to stay alert every second.

I honestly don't think I'd be able to drive anywhere unfamiliar without navigation. It seems much more complicated than driving in most other cities I've been to.

Gym recommendations near LSE?

Can anyone recommend a good gym near LSE?

I’ve been looking at King’s Gym, but is it any good? It looks a bit small and cramped in the photos.

I mainly do weight training, so I’d prefer somewhere with a decent selection of free weights, benches and racks.

2023 GLC Premium vs Premium Plus

I'm looking at buying a used 2023 Mercedes GLC and can't decide between these two:

  • GLC Premium: 18k miles, £38k
  • GLC Premium Plus: 30k miles, £41k

The Premium has lower mileage and is £3k cheaper, but the Premium Plus has all the extra features.

Do you think the Premium Plus is worth paying an extra £3k for, even with an additional 12k miles? Or would you take the lower-mileage Premium instead?

Insurance quote jumped from £1,200 to £4,000+ overnight

I'm looking to buy a 2025 Range Rover Velar and started getting insurance quotes on Compare the Market.

The first quote I got was around £1,200, which I was happy with. But when I checked again later using the same details, every quote came back at £4,000+.

I know my premium is higher because I've held my full UK licence for less than a year, but such a huge difference doesn't make any sense. At this point, it feels like I might have to give up on buying the Velar because of the insurance.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Is there any reason why the quotes would increase this much, or is there anything I can do to get them back down?

Why do so many homes in the UK have carpeted floors?

I’ve noticed that a lot of homes in the UK have carpeted floors, and I honestly don’t really understand.

Do many people actually prefer carpet? Why?

Am I too old to join university societies?

I’m 35 and starting a master’s degree this year in the UK.

I’m excited about it, but I’m also a bit worried.

I'd like to join some societies or clubs, but do you think younger students would find it a bit awkward?

Because, in my country, university societies are mostly made up of undergraduate students of a similar age, so joining as a 35 years old would be quite unusual. I'm not sure if it's different in the UK.

Any way to lease a Tesla as a new UK resident?

I’m trying to lease a Tesla in the UK through Personal Contract Hire, but the finance provider, Santander, appears to require at least three years of UK address or credit history.

I’ve only been living in the UK for about one year, so I’m unable to meet that requirement. My income and employment are stable, and I can provide UK payslips, bank statements, proof of employment, visa details, and confirmation that my employer supports the monthly lease cost.

Has anyone in a similar situation managed to get approved through Santander by providing additional financial or employment evidence? Is manual underwriting possible, or is the 3 years UK address history an absolute requirement?

I’d also be interested to hear whether anyone has successfully used a different finance provider for a Tesla lease as a relatively new UK resident.

How do people manage rental move-in dates in London?

My landlord is increasing my rent by about 15%, so I’m looking to move.

I need to give two months’ notice on my current place, which means I’d ideally need 2–3 months before moving.

But most flats on Rightmove/Zoopla seem to be available immediately or within a few weeks, and agents usually want tenants who can move quickly.

How do people actually manage this in London?

Do you secure a new place first and accept some double rent, or give notice first and take the risk of not finding somewhere in time?

Is this a particularly bad time of year to look for rentals?

I’m looking for a flat in London again after about a year, and rents seem to have gone up a lot compared with last year.

Is it just me, or has the market become much more expensive recently?

Also, is this a particularly bad time of year to look for rentals? It feels like there aren’t many good properties available, and the ones that are listed seem overpriced.

Beginner golfer looking for swing feedback

Hi everyone,

I’ve just started practising golf recently. I’m currently learning on my own by watching YouTube videos.

I know my swing and posture are still very rough, and there are many things I need to improve.

I’d really appreciate it if you could take a look at my video and let me know what I’m doing wrong or what I should focus on improving first.

Thanks in advance!

What are Paddington Basin and Hammersmith like to live in?

I’ve been living in St John’s Wood for around a year. It’s a lovely area, but I find it a bit too quiet and boring, so I’m looking for somewhere with a bit more life.

I’m interested in modern apartments, so I’ve been looking at places like Paddington Basin and Hammersmith. What are Paddington Basin and Hammersmith like to live in?

My wife works in Uxbridge, so west or north-west London would probably make the most sense for commuting.

Are they good options, or are there any other areas in west or north-west London that I should consider?

When does school usually inform pre-sessional course details?

I’m an offer holder for a master’s programme, and pre-sessional course is supposed to start in just a few weeks.

But I still haven’t received any details about the course. I haven’t been given any information about the timetable, induction, or how to access the course materials/platform.

Is this normal? When does school usually send out pre-sessional course details?

Glc vs Velar

I’m considering buying either a Mercedes GLC or a Range Rover Velar.

With my budget, I could get a high-spec GLC or a mid-spec Velar. I really love the design of the Velar, but I think the GLC is probably the more balanced option in terms of technology, reliability, and overall practicality.

I know it ultimately comes down to personal preference, but if you were in my position, which one would you choose?

Should I move from St John’s Wood to Paddington Basin?

I’ve been living in St John’s Wood for about a year since moving to London. It’s a nice area, quiet, safe, and close to Regent’s Park.

But honestly, I’m starting to find it a bit boring, so I’ve been looking at other areas. Paddington Basin looks quite appealing to me. Newer buildings, great transport links, and it feels a bit more lively.

That said, a few people have told me not to move there, so now I’m second-guessing it.

What do you think? Would moving from St John’s Wood to Paddington Basin be a good idea, or would it be a downgrade?
