People who live in an apartment without a hose - how do you rinse your media?

I live in an apartment building with no outdoor hose/tap access.

I rinsed pumice in my kitchen a few weeks ago I was careful to only rinse in a bucket, then dump the bucket outside. But I think some rocks got stuck in my garbage disposal because I can’t turn the blades anymore. So I definitely don’t wanna do that again.

So question for my fellow apartment dwellers - how do you rinse your pumice/LECA?

I have 2 tanks (17g and 10g) with aquasoil but I want to try a small walstad before setting up my next bigger tank!

Can I put decorative crushed glass in my water?

I’m growing a spider plant in a vase using water from my aquarium and it’s growing new roots! Can I put this glass in the vase? I know it won’t absorb water like leca or pumice, it’s just for aesthetics.

Can I use one of these planters for a mini pond?

I live in a studio with a balcony and recently became obsessed with the idea of making a mini pond. I already have a few fish tanks.

I found 2 resin planter at Lowe’s -
Option 1: 8.5 gal, 15.2” wide x 12.9” tall
Option 2: 9.8 gallons, 16.4” wide x 14.3” tall
They both have punch out drain holes but I’m assuming the base will still be strong enough?

I live in the Pacific Northwest so temps are 60s-80s F during the day, 50-70s F at night over the summer. I’ll bring them inside when it gets colder (either keep them in the planter or move them to a tank).

I’m hoping to have 6-10 rice fish. Will move any fry to a tank so it’s not overstocked. I’m planning on running a sponge filter.

Spent hundreds on plants and seeing no growth. What am I doing wrong?

I set up my tank a couple months ago but I haven’t seen any plant growth. My plants either die, turn yellow, or just sit stagnant. I recently upgraded my light from a random Amazon plant grow light to a Hygger 957 and took off the lid.

I’ve been doing a lot of research and trying to rule out common issues. Everything is planted correctly (no buried rhizomes or crowns), not moving the plants around, rooted plants aren’t too close together, and trim dying leaves. I know some melt is normal after planting. no algae issues.

I test with an API liquid kit a couple times a week (mostly out of curiosity). Parameters are stable.

I bought most of my plants from local fish stores or hobbyists, with a few tissue cultures from PetCo (which interestingly are the only ones that had 0 melt).

So far, the only noticeable growth is a single Bacopa caroliniana stem, even though other stems have similar placement.

~~

details —

Tank: 20 gallon long

Substrate: Fluval Stratum (~15 lb), sand (~5 lb), crushed coral (~1 lb)

Light: 48 watt Hygger 957 (running auto mode: 100% for ~12 hrs, ~1 week so far)

Fertilizer: Thrive all-in-one (weekly)

Stock: 6 guppies, 1 honey gourami, 2 mystery snails, ramshorn snails, bladder snails

Water parameters:
pH: 7.4
Nitrates: ~20 ppm usually, ~40 ppm for the last week because I read it was better for plants

Plants
2 months :
Java fern (had another but it died)
Anubias nana
Amazon sword (had another but it died)
Bacopa caroliniana (only plant that grew)
Bucephalandra

1 month:
2 Amazon swords
Giant vallisneria

2 weeks:
Java moss
Hornwort
microsword
Ludwigia arcuata
Duckweed

New new:
Dwarf sagittaria
Smaller vallisneria
Salvinia minima

I understand it takes at least a couple weeks for plants to adjust and then another couple weeks to see growth. But I see posts showing their tank after 1-2 months, and they see awesome growth so I’m just feeling discouraged. It’s taking a lot of fun out of it because I keep spending money trying to see at least some improvement and my plants are just turning yellow. And as a student, every dollar counts!

I read that you can see hornwort and duckweed grow in a matter of days but my hornwort is just browning.

Am I just being impatient?
Or is there something I’m doing wrong?
I’m in medical school so I’m pretty type A, and realizing I can’t micro manage aquariums is so hard!

ETA: I know the placement of my plants/hardscape is not very aesthetic. I’m waiting to see what plants actually take off and will rescape based off that.

Haven’t seen my mystery snail for 3 days after a massive water change

I have a brand new tank. Cycled it for about a month and just started adding creatures this week.

I got 2 mystery snails four days ago. They honestly didn’t seem too stressed about the new tank as they were exploring, parasnailing, and not hiding at all.

Two days later, I did a 80-90% water change and added six guppies. And I have not seen one of the mystery snails since then, even though he’s biiig and my tank is just a 20 gal.

I don’t think he escaped because I have a lid. But I’ve looked under my driftwood, around the sponge filter, and in my plants and no sign of him anywhere. No ammonium spikes or weird smell so I’m hoping he’s still alive?

But I have no idea where he could have gone. Since my tank is still new, it’s not like theres a super lush jungle where he could be easily hiding. I read that they can bury themselves but I’ve looked at every inch of my tank and I can’t find any signs of him.

The other snail is completely fine. I know big water changes are stressful but I assumed it would adapt fine since it wasn’t shy after moving into my tank.

How long do mystery snails hide after something like this? When should I start freaking out and something is likely very wrong?

ETA: I added broccoli to try to lure him out, but hasn’t worked

Is the Electra Loft Go! 7D EQ a good bike for me? Found one basically new for $750

I want an ebike for fun, exercise, and light commuting. Most of my rides will probably be around 5-15 miles, 20 miles at the max.

I don’t care about top speed, but I do live in a very hilly city. Lots of hills, lots of long hills, and lots of steep hills. Couldn’t find an actual source but Google’s AI says an average of grade of 6-10%. Steepest hill is 26%, but obviously will avoid the extremes!

I stopped riding my normal bike because I had to take multiple breaks going uphill, and it was unsafe in traffic and honestly wasn’t fun anymore. I tried planning flatter routes but it’s so limiting that biking isn’t worth it.

I know the Loft Go is pedal assist only and I think I’m okay with that. I want to get into better shape, but need the extra help while I work on it.

I’ve been looking for other second hand bikes with more powerful motors but so far they’ve been out of my budget. Somehow found this basically new Loft Go at $750. Honestly it’s still a stretch for me but I also know I won’t find a better deal for something reliable, ready to ride, and from a reputable company.

Is it worth it for me? Or should I keep looking?

Class 1 e-bike
250W motor
40 Nm torque
Up to 40-mile range
250 Wh battery
Shimano Tourney 7-speed drivetrain
Rigid steel fork
46.3 lbs (21 kg)

Edit: I know that some Lectric bikes would probably fit my needs and there are some deals on Facebook. But I just really hate the way small tires look! I’d rather keep waiting for something else than get one.

Fluctuating scores, should I push back?

My exam is in 8 days and my scores are fluctuating. My goal is 250+.

NBME 16 — 249 (yesterday)
14 - 255 (4 days ago)
13 - 242 (5/11)
12 - 246 (4/19)
11 - 231 (4/12)
10 - 232 (4/6)

My psych score fluctuates a lot. OBGYN was my strongest section on 14 but became my lowest discipline yesterday.

I still have NBME 15 and the free 120 left. concerned about the stronger emphasis on nutrition because I haven’t particularly focused on it so I would need to study all of that.

Actual quiet places to study? Public libraries are almost always loud

Are there any actual quiet places to study on the weekend?

I’ve tried going to the multiple public libraries multiple times around Seattle and theyre always loud. I can’t even ask the librarians to ask patrons to quiet down because half the time they’re the ones talking! And study rooms are always taken.

Parking at UW is horrendously expensive and difficult to find.

Seattle U is only open to students on the weekend.
