Hey dear Awesomenauts community,

This Sunday, you now know it: something big is coming. I am not going to put little screenshots each days, it's now time to go concrete & explain clearly what's going on.

Veterans already understood more or less the essential by looking at the 2 screen captures shared there, but the approach was confusing for newcomers and people who did not touch the game since years.

Today, what I am glad to share with you is not a new visual but a whole FAQ that I tried to make pretty complete. I hope it will fulfil all your curiosity =)

FAQ

What is coming this Sunday ?

AwesomEver, a full Galactron server-side fan-recreation and fan-maintained, that can communicate with the 4.7.2 client (last version from Ronimo Games).

What's the appeal as a player ?

Maintained by a fan working for the fans
You can continue to play with the client 5.x from Atari if you prefer it, if you don't follow the joining steps from AwesomEver your life will continue as normal
Playing the real latest version (4.7.2) developed by Ronimo, untouched, exactly how you remember it. All the bugs & issues introduced with 5.x are just not there (invisible nauts, same Naut 2x in the same team, etc)
Custom games browser
Play on community custom maps
Parties which persist across matches
In real time spectator mode
Server-side replays browser
Server-side matchmaking, that can be fine tuned. Right now it's mimicking as close as how Galactron was back then (thanks Joost for the very complete documentation on his blog), putting people together each 6 minutes. There's several checks, and one of them is to avoid starting laggy matches where there's more than 200ms of ping between players. Though the real quality of this new matchmaking will depend on how much players there will be no matter how good the algorithm can be.
Leavers automatically banned for a few minutes so people are incited to stay in the match
If you lose connection completely or if your PC crash, you have some time to reconnect to the room you were in
If you lose connection to Steam or if there is a Tuesday maintenance on Steam, it won't affect your match

Mac OS X 10.7+ 32 bits & Linux compatibility (using their original client as a base) planned

Piracy ?

No, you need to buy Awesomenauts from Atari on Steam and patch the files by yourself to redirect the game to AwesomEver.

This fan-made Galactron server checks ownership of the game and will refuse you if you try to connect using a pirated copy of Awesomenauts, you need to be connected on Steam and launch the game when Steam is also running on the background to be able to play.

Same about DLCs: ownership will be strictly checked by the server using Steam APIs to give you only what you paid for from Atari (even if those DLCs are technically just flags that I could easily override if I wanted to lol).

About characters, it makes no sense to apply f2p rules there. So all Nauts will be unlocked with all upgrades available from start.

Game heavily patched ?

Nope, patches on the 4.7.2 client are minimalistic and focused on doing the necessary redirections to connect to my private fan-made Galactron server.

Virus ?

Patch will be distributed as a plain .bps file that you can review and apply yourself using open source patchers from the web like the RomPatcher.js that you may already know if you used to like playing console games rom hacks.

Though for people who like automated stuff, a Windows script will be shipped that automates everything for you.

If you don't trust me, just ask a good LLM or an experienced dev to review the .bps patch for you, I have nothing to hide. The .bps is doing only the necessary to redirect auth properly to the AwesomEver Galactron server.

Gameplay bug fixes ?

Planned but in the long term. Short term will be only about server stability & community management.

I want to make/promote community events related to AwesomEver/Awesomenauts ?

A section on the Discord will be opened so people that wants to make stuff (tournaments, art contests etc) can promote it there freely.

No logo or art related to AwesomEver ?

I am not artist and think it is direspectful & not ecological to spit LLM generated stuff to illustrate the project. I love human art & to look at Awesomenauts fanarts. So if you wanna help to make something cool, contact me.

Balacing patches ?

Not planned, it's a preservation project

New content ?

Moderation ?

Yes, just use ingame reporting tools from the client. I have all the tools on the server to process them efficiently.

Monetization ?

Not planned, people who do donations to me on my Patreon won't get any advantage or special titles.

Is it sustainable ?

Yes, it's not relying on any kind of Microsoft Azure proprietary stuff. My technical stack is relying only on open source tech ; all works on popular Linux distros and everything is containerized anyway to run on basically everything that supports Docker.

This gives me a lot of freedom if I ever need/want to change my hosting provider.

But donations are much apprecied. I had also to spend money on LLM API costs to make this project possible at all.

Nauts console versions support ? Or other Galactron nauts versions ?

Never. The game will move forward from 4.7.2 from now on, and may stay in 4.7.2 for a long while before getting any kind of modification.

Can I ask Atari for support if something goes wrong ?

NO, this fan project is fully independent from Atari. Please don't bother them with tickets, if AwesomEver Galactron is down for whatever reason it's not their fault and they can't do anything about it. AwesomEver is NOT official, it is available through fan-modding and maintained by a fan.

DON'T ASK ATARI ABOUT HELP/SUPPORT, AwesomEver is another planet in the Awesomenauts cosmos !

What if Atari wants to make this official and buy it at some point ?

I am open to talk especially if they have things in mind that can benefit to the players.

Can I be banned from the 5.x Atari version by using this ?

No, you are playing on a custom server. Also if you get banned from AwesomEver for whatever reason, you won't be banned from Atari's 5.x it's all fully isolated and it's your right as a player to mod the games you own.

MacOS/Linux compatibility ?

Planned

Retrocomputing compatibility ?

In my opinion preservation is not just about providing the game as-is to newer platforms, but also providing tutorials and all the resources so it can run on everything that could run Awesomenauts back in the day. I plan to study compatibility to the game can be played from real OS X Lion and Windows XP/7 machines like it was intended to.

Where's my medals ? My level ? My replays ? My nautspoints ?

I don't have the server data of Ronimo Games related to your old account so everyone is starting from scratch. There's no leaks, all of my work has been done with (lot of) patience, tooling & reverse engineering.

About the medals though, there's an exception with the Silver/Gold Killer Koala medals as those are linked with a specific DLC on your Steam account, and since I can know which ones you've purchased, you will get them automatically at your first connection. There's technical limits from what I can get from Steam APIs, for example I can't give you back the founder medal because I can't know when you've purchased the game if it was before the f2p era in 2017.

Why are you doing stuff for free ?

The air you breath is free, but keeps you alive right now. Putting a price on everything in life is sad, I like culture to be accessible not gated behind additional paywalls.

Much of the good stuff in the internet related to preservation comes from underground cultures & communities and I am proud to be independently a part of a larger movement that fights against oblivion and obsolescence.

Did you had network dumps to do this ?

No so it was way more nightmarish than it could be, but new fancy LLM tools are definitely helping a lot. And patience, a lot of patience. Dedication about making the vision come true, with maximum conviction that it's important for the humanity that this game remains available in its best possible state without compromises.

Skins ?

Yes ! The ones you've purchased from Atari/already own. No more no less.

I can technically unlock all for everyone, but I believe it's more ethical to do it this way for the moment to put more value into the unlock flags that Atari is still selling.

Can I find players from the 5.x Atari version ?

Nope, the matchmaking is completely unrelated

What is the planning for the future ?

One post per day until Sunday on Reddit, with content related to AwesomEver. Always around 6 PM (Paris hour).
Friday (in 2 days), I plan to start open beta-testing with the members of my new Discord that you can join there : https://discord.olsro.fr/ No stability guarantees (the Galactron replacement game server will not be available all day and will cut a lot if I need to push updates), but people there will help me to eradicate all kind of server bugs that may ruin the fun for the players at the release date. I plan to nolife my whole weekend at fixing stuff as much as it is necessary. Active people that will help me at actively reporting issues will get the first duck medals of AwesomEver at launch.
Sunday (in 4 days): released to the world, open access outside of the selected beta testers. Server data/stats from the beta test period will be erased, everyone will start at 0 in the same moment.
Later: stabilizing the colossus then thinking about what can be done. Legacy Mac OS X/Linux compatibility is already planned.

In 2024, I built a huge archive of Cydia tweaks. Seeing some repos like Cydiavn are getting unstable these days, I found motivation to host a proper archive available 24h/24 of around 300GB of Cydia tweaks.

There's some exclusivities/rarities there, like a fixed version of "FullForce for phone" that does not crash/bootloop on iOS 6. It's available on my personal repo.

I got several requests of tweaks uploads like "Cyueue" and handled these by uploading to Workupload, but links just get deleted over time. Here it is a more long term solution, & easy to access.

My archives repos are available through plain http, so you won't get blocked or annoyed if your device does not have up to date certs.

[RELEASE] PowerVLC 2.1: stabilizing the colossus

PowerVLC is an open source solo-dev non official and not affiliated with VideoLAN fork of VLC 3 for the community with extra features, bug fixes, improvements, and more compatible with older hardware and OS versions. Big focus on Linux / Windows

I received this week my Intel Xe 11th gen Intel laptop, which means I have finally a very decent Windows/Linux in my test bank.

I invested much time and dualbooted it with Ubuntu 26.04 LTS to improve stability on PowerVLC there notably with:

CRT filters
(Alpha quality) Dolby Vision support on Windows without FEL (D3D11 do not support it). Experimental source-led Dolby Vision rendering on Linux (beta), including per-frame RPU reshaping and Profile 7 FEL composition. Native display signalling is currently limited to a manually activated and narrowly validated Intel i915 HDMI path: it is not licensed TV-led passthrough.
Windows Installer is now bigger but extracts the files much faster. Windows Defender was making the NSIS installer a nightmare to install.
h.264 software 3D MVC decoding (to play 3D Blu-ray) is now available & fully tested on Linux, with auto switch of the HDMI display in 3D mode just like other platforms (need to launch the appimage with --direct-hdmi-3d <path to the iso>, will be improved in the future)
Plugin cache now shipped on Windows builds, you no longer need to wait minutes before the startup of PowerVLC on Windows 11. Windows Defender was again making the building of the cache very slow.
General stability fixed for both platforms

Online subtitles search

As suggested by u/Arnoxthe1 on Reddit, I searched on improving the situation on PowerVLC by looking at how SMPlayer was handling things.

You can download & activate subtitles now directly from PowerVLC in an ergonomical way without ever leaving PowerVLC. A shortcut to open that new extension can be accessed from the context menu of a video.

Anonymous downloads are possible without an account (5 per day max per IP). The extension integrated on PowerVLC was written from scratch rather than forked from the official one from OpenSubtitles, and is compatible with all the platforms supported by PowerVLC with great user experience even down to Mac OS X Jaguar.

Major fixes on DVDs with notably

Some DVD images stopped as the film started
DVD menu startup preserves language initialization

Proper Idle screen for Mac OS X

Linux and Windows had it since so many years on VLC. It's now time for Mac OS X to also get it, with the same rules which mean you can play music in a more immersive way, showing large album arts filling the whole main window

Time to rewatch Spirited Away with CRT filter

Hello to all the Ghibli fans !

This is PowerVLC, my heavily tuned fork of VLC3 I crafted with love for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux.

Yesterday I made a huge update, and part of that update was to add the ability to watch content through CRT filters.

All RetroArch filters are available. Looks gorgeous with all kind of old animes, especially low-res/DVD quality. DVDs can look really amazing, I wanna share the vibe here with "Spirited Away".

I believe it is the first video player that has this ability out of the box, and since it is based on VLC3 it is extremely powerful, simple to use & very compatible.

May it remind you the first time you watched some of those Ghibli movies with your family on your old cathodic TV 20 years ago ?

Dolby Vision

All common types of Dolby Vision, including FEL. Automatically switches your TV/Projector into Dolby Vision mode when starting to play a compatible content.

Validated on Apple Silicon only for the moment. Linux/Windows planned later, I need to get some new hardware before.

New Media Library

The new media library intent is to provide an auto-managed way to store your music or just scan your existing music folders. Then PowerVLC builds & maintain its own database (like iTunes), and you can browse your library or play a random track based on the metadata.

The old VLC3-style media library is still there and just renamed as the "Catch-All Media Library". It is planned to stay as it is simple and accepts just keeping symbolic links on anything you drop into it. Don't change your habits if you're not interested to the new media library and like to just access your content without abstractions

The media library from PowerVLC is superfast and works/can do search very fast on large libraries even on a barebone G3.

iPods on Apple OS, Rockbox, and mass storage mp3 players syncing

Sync your media library & drag/drop from/to your device directly from PowerVLC.

As invested I am on the iPods/DAP community, I could not refrain myself on working on a solution to sync my iPods.

Features :

Autotranscoding to a compatible audio format of your choice (mp3, aac) using bundled ffmpeg 9.0.1
If you sync to an iPod and transcode to AAC, aac_pns will be disabled. You also have the option to remap automatically "Album Artists" as "Composer" only in the destination iTunes DB file because it's a popular way in the iPod community to get an "Album artist" view on the player itself (by sacrifying the Composer view)
If you sync to a Rockbox player, cover arts will be auto converted to plain JPEG

Supported iPods : All Nanos, Classics, Shuffle, Minis

Windows: CJK & special characters support

Now a custom font is loaded, so even on Windows XP PowerVLC will be happy to show correctly all of your tracks with special & Chinese/Japanese/Korean characters

CRT TV filters

Watch your old content & animes with a full nostalgic experience on your modern screen by simulating cathodic tube displays.

Simple filters available for old computers, and complex RetroArch CRT (CRT Royale, etc) shaders all available if your graphic card is modern enough to use them.

It is superfast (less than 100kb to host) and will load fast even on 25 years old browsers. It is useful especially if you own yourself a Jellyfin server so you can provide a new option to your users to access your server, ideally in plain HTTP, so any kind of old device will be able to connect.

JellyDinosaur features even its own lite Flash player, so any old browser with Flash 9+ will also be able to play your collection of files as long as your Jellyfin server is able to transcode.

The strength of JellyDinosaur compared to other retro-solutions is that it interacts only with what the JellyFin API already offers, there's nothing to modify on the Jellyfin server by itself. PowerVLC 1.3 has just released

PowerVLC, your VLC3 fork is now getting its third major updates since its launch. New features, as always, and countless hours spent in bugs fixing ensuring the experience is closer to perfect than it ever was. Welcome to the retro future.

On the Video I show some of the key features running on my 10.6.8 Mac Mini Core 2 Duo that has the Broadcom Crystal HD 1080p decoding card, but PowerVLC is still compatible starting Jaguar 10.2, GNU Linux (tested on real hardware for the first time and confirmed working on my Intel Atom N270 Netbook \ _ / ), and Windows XP SP3+.

I announced in some place "1.2.1", but I decided to not do it and go directly to the "1.3.0" considering the amount of things I am now happy to be ready to deploy right now.

Key features

Intel i386 build confirmed working great on a real Acer Aspire One Atom N270 laptop. Can play HD content just fine with software decoding on AntiX Linux.

Sorry for the lack of polish until then, but I plan to continue to eradicate bugs to deliver a high level quality on all 3 major desktop platforms.

Clip creation mode

An ergonomical clip creation mode, to easily select parts of the current audio/video you are playing & export quickly (no transcoding needed) a lossless cut of your content.

Improved seekbar

Mac OS X (Legacy + Modern) is now on-par with Qt:

Chapters marks on the seekbar
Tooltip that show the seek time + chapter name if available

And on all platforms, it's now possible to preview the pictures just by hovering on the seekbar with most formats/containers. This new option is disabled on slow machines by default though for performance reasons.

Picture-In-Picture (borderless video window)

A new option to hide all controls of the window after the mouse is outside of it during 3 seconds. Just double click, and controls will be back. On 10.6+, even the title bar hides so it feels like true Picture-In-Picture if you also enable the "Always on top" feature.

On Windows, XP is enough to enjoy it fully.

Automatic auto-cropping

Detects automatically the black bars of the content you're playing to find the real aspect radio of it. Works also on IPTV/adaptative streams. Combines very well with the Picture-In-Picture mode for maximum immersion.

Download from Invidious

You can now archive videos from the Invidious instances if you wanna archive & watch them later. Though be aware you need ffmpeg to combine audio + video streams (PowerVLC will automatically call it, but you need it in your path). You can also decide to download just the audio of a video alone for musical contents.

Translations fixed

Translations will finally work so PowerVLC will adapt to your language.

PowerVLC 1.2 is here with major improvements for all platforms

Key features

All tested from my iBook G3 and guaranteed usable on Jaguar 10.2. Any better machine will lead to faster experience. As always, PowerVLC is universally compatible on desktop machines: Linux (arm64/intel64/intel32), Mac OS X (10.2 Jaguar to Tahoe 26), Windows (XP SP3+)

Invidious

YouTube is important, it hosts so much knowledge and content. It's the main freely available video bank in the internet and we all know how painful it now behaves with old machines because of all the JavaScript to run.

I couldn't manage to find any satisfying way to integrate YouTube directly, so I tried to think out of the box and the best compromise right now in my opinion is to access it through a super-powerful proxy : Invidious

The Invidious ecosystem seems dynamic right now with several public instances available 24h/24.

With Invidious APIs integrated properly into PowerVLC, the Tube is now back and quickly accessible even with the lower G3's in town.

Of course you can also use yt-dlp and PPCMC, this new plug-in is one more option

Jellyfin

A completely integrated Jellyfin client/front-end that can connect through HTTPS using the modern gnuTLS integrated in PowerVLC.

Can find content, filter, search, handle auth, request transcoding from the server to the quality of your choice (if your server supports it of course).

I took all the knowledge that I got from developing JellyDinosaur (a plain HTML/JavaScript ES3 compliant Jellyfin Front-End that I plan to share soon... when I find time). JellyDinosaur was finished weeks ago but PowerVLC is eating all my free time so I couldn't find time to share it to the community.

Anyway, directly integrating the spirit of JellyDinosaur gives even a better experience to the end user. It is more ergonomic & fast, you don't even need a web browser and to bother yourself with TLS and all the kind of quirks that comes with web based solutions and it saves your precious RAM.

Navidrome Subsonic

Auth on your server or one of your friend directly from PowerVLC. Find, search, stream music with gapless playback & download music directly from any Subsonic server.

Podcasts discovery through the iTunes Open API

MPEG2 DVD hardware decoding improved

Now all ATI Rage G3 should be supported too, which includes many CRT iMacs so these can now join the party of hardware-accelerated decoding, which means full speed DVDs playback with low CPU usage, low eat, and perfect smoothness. In the heat-waves we're suffering right now, you don't want a heater in your room.

I also fixed the support of animated DVD menus, they were not hardware-accelerated at all before this update.

Crystal HD acceleration card support (Mac OS X)

All tested on my Mac Mini Core 2 Duo where I replaced its wifi card with the BCM970015 card. PowerVLC is able to detect if your Mac has this acceleration card at launch and offers a convenient dialog to install the kext all automatically, you never need to run commands in the terminal by yourself or use a dead old XBMC version to use your Crystal HD acceleration card on Mac OS X.

PowerVLC will always try to use it when it can, it's transparent when you play format that is compatible with what you card can decode. This card is very efficient & gives smooth h.264 1080p decoding even on very weak machines like hackintoshed Intel Atom N270 netbooks.

ALTIVEC accelerated HEVC decoding

Enjoy faster decoding performance on your G4 and G5 macs.

Adaptative streams & IPTV

You can now change the quality manually using menus to fit your needs, and select any quality offered by the streamed content

Builds size reduction

Optimizations were done to reduce the binary sizes. The universal binary has been drastically reduced while keeping compatibility with all Macs. The G4e build was not relevant (+0.5% of performance measured) so it was abandoned completely also.

Invidious

The Invidious ecosystem seems dynamic right now with several public instances available 24h/24.

With Invidious APIs integrated properly into PowerVLC, the Tube is now back and quickly accessible even with the lower G3's in town.

Of course you can also use yt-dlp and PPCMC, this new plug-in is one more option

Jellyfin

A completely integrated Jellyfin client/front-end that can connect through HTTPS using the modern gnuTLS integrated in PowerVLC.

Can find content, filter, search, handle auth, request transcoding from the server to the quality of your choice (if your server supports it of course).

Navidrome Subsonic

Auth on your server or one of your friend directly from PowerVLC. Find, search, stream music with gapless playback & download music directly from any Subsonic server.

Podcasts discovery through the iTunes Open API

Play random radios using the new shortcuts

These new shortcuts are available by default from the PowerVLC radios browser. You can then copy these shortcuts to your media library, and it will play a different radio each time:

Globally
By the continent of your choice
By the country of your choice

This way you can conveniently discover new stations & new music.

A PowerVLC Firefox XUL extension

Works with PowerFox ♥, Basilisk, and anything based on the XUL platform*

You can install this browser extension quickly from the "Help" menu, it will supercharge your browser so you can:

Send links (with right click) to PowerVLC directly
Right click on videos: a new link will be available to send it directly to PowerVLC
Use your browser to resolve JavaScript challenges to access protected Invidious instances from PowerVLC

I also fixed the support of animated DVD menus, they were not hardware-accelerated at all before this update.
