I don't know where to go after high school

Hi,

I am on my last year of high school in France and I would like to study abroad for an International Relations degree in english (equivalent of Science Po here in France) as I would like to work in these field later either in an NGO or in an Embassy. I first looked at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University in Japan as I found it interesting but I recently changed my mind as I saw some reviews saying that the most valuable thing there was the networking rather than the education.

I unfortunately don't have many choices as I am constrained by my financial means and the availability of scholarships 😓.

I would like to hear from y'all.

Hairstyle suggestions

Hello!

So I (17M) have curly hair (3B-3C) with a face shape between oval and oblong and I often struggle to find a haircut suited for me and for my hairtype. The thing is my parents have been choosing my haircut for a long time to "get their money worth" as I have a lot of thick hair and those were always very very short haircut. But this time I get to choose, but I don't know what. So, I'd like some suggestions.

P.S.: I don't show my face because I really don't like how I look and it puts me in a great mental distress.

How to overcome internalized racism

As many may know in this sub, North Africans are EXTREMELY racist. Like epitome of racism in Africa probably. And as a (indigenous nonetheless) North African, I have internalized racism that I absolutely do not want to hold on but don't know what to do.

My first step was to get closer to my Amazigh roots as it allowed me to fully proclaim myself as African as in North African countries, people act as if they aren't part of the continent. Which is really sad because Africa is such an ethnically wealthy continent full of diversity.

(To be clear, I have never encountered a situation where I discriminated anyone based on their skin color or their ethnicity. However I would love to deconstruct that part of myself before it happens without me noticing.)

How to be in a calorie deficit?

So, my situation is quite particular. I do exercise regularly and do cardio and I know very well the only reason I don't lose any weight is because of my calorie intake.

The thing is, I do not control what I eat. To not go too much into details for personal reasons (and out of respect for anyone who reads this), my mother cooks for the family (and it is very calorie dense food each time. To the point where both her and my father have diabetes and cholesterol 🫠). The thing is I cannot cook for myself because the kitchen is very small and she gets very hostile when I did try.

The thing I do to try to somehow be in some sort of vague and unreliable calorie deficit is to eat every 6-10 hours. But it isn't working as I think the food is still too calorie dense for it to work.

Any tips would be welcome :)

I just finished The Things They Carried, and what now?

I am shaking right now. I have never felt like this before and the closest I had to this was about The Catcher In The Rye.

All that complexity, the unexpected view on war, the horrible and heart wrenching things that happened, the rich and deep imagery and, I think that is what really made it for me, the thin line between Reality and Fiction. How we tell things to be felt, not to just tell them. There was also the relationship to the dead, >!especially with the last chapter The Lives of the Dead that left me absolutely crying.!<

For context, I read that book as it is part of my syllabus, and right after that I am hoping on The Handmaid's Tale. But I feel like a deep hole settled in my chest right and I don't know what to do to be honest. I am also supposed to reread it for the upcoming year but I don't know if I'll have the strength to touch it again. It was one of the only book that made me feel like reading wasn't a chore.

I would like to hear different interpretations of the book or just some part of it and even on how deeply it shook you too.

The Hopeful Witch

This is a passage of a scene I have in my head from my own original story I keep to myself.

The night had engulfed the sky in its familiar dark veil. Only the stars were admitted in the astral banquet that took place in the broad celestial realm.

Meanwhile, another event took place down on earth. The low noises of metal pieces creaking against each other were the only words spoken for some time. Two swings moved together, staying forever parallel to each other and never crossing despite the movement. One swung gently, almost with uncertainty. The other swung with the joy and the youthful energy of a child that never had the opportunity to be.

“Can I ask you a question?...”

“Mhm…”

“Why hope?”

“Why hope?” The enthusiastic figure on the swing giggled, as if the question contained the answer.

“Yes…Why hope?”

“Because I wouldn't be there otherwise, silly.” He kept a soft smile.

The other boy tensed slightly, as an answer to what seemed an impossible thought.

“I had to hope, and hope, and hope…and hope. And here I am.”

“But…I saw you that day…you weren't…you weren't the same…you weren't…hopeful…”

The swift swinging boy had stopped. He sighed, a deep seated sigh, punctuated with another smile.

“Yes. You are right. Hope is such a powerful concept. Everything is hope. All is due to hope. However…if you aren't careful…you can fall into delusions…”

The slower one interrupted his maternal and mechanical motion.

“Despair and Delusions…” He looked beside him, straight into these yellow eyes. “Promise me you won't leave without a warning…promise me…”

“I cannot make such promises…I have fooled Death twice now. To be honest…I do not know what will happen to me…but, I keep hoping for a better future. Not for me. I don't really care about that. But for others…for those whom I helped…”

The other boy looked down at his feet, slowly. Beneath them, the grass had been burnt, and the soil barren. Yet a single flower managed to bloom right there in front of him. Its blue petals framed elegantly the yellow core like ribbons.

The swing next to him was suddenly empty. The yellow-eyed one walking in front of him.

“Come on! Stop brooding in your corner. I said I was hoping for better days to come.” He took the gloomy boy's hands in his. “I'll stay…as much as I can…I promise…”

The promise made the pleading one's head move upward to look at the other one's face. “Hm…Why? Why do you do that?”

The other one grinned. “Because I am The Hopeful Witch.”

Killer of the photographer

So, I have this theory about who the real murderer of the photographer might be. I don't know if this has been officially settled or if it is too obvious to be pointed out, but I think that it is Rumi behind his death.

During the killing scene of the photographer, the killer seems to have Mima's head but their body is off. They have a larger body on some frames. Not only that, but Rumi is implied to be able to visit without pre-announcing herself and might have a copy of the keys for Mima's apartment. Thus explaining how the bloody clothes were found in Mima's closet.

And so, we can also link Rumi to the scenarist's death as their bodies bear the same wounds (eye-less head).

What I don't understand is why would Rumi kill Mr. Tadokoro. It's true they had by the past opposing motives considering Mima's career, but by the end of the movie, they seem to be on good terms. Yet his body also bears the same wounds with the eye-less head.

Byzantine Aesthetic

I am so sick and bored of Ancient Greece being the soil representation of Greek culture and history in media. But I also struggle to find more about the Byzantine Aesthetic that isn't just "Golden church architecture". I would like to know more about the roots of the aesthetic (clothes, customs, crafts, resources...etc). I even wonder if it's because of the Ottoman annexation that average people know so little about this period compared to Ancient Greece.

If anyone has more infos abt the Byzantine Aesthetic, I'd be thankful.
