Old blue eyes can go to hell!

I’m frustrated with Frank Sinatra and/or his fans.

I’m honestly not sure if my frustration is with Frank himself or just his listeners/fans…let me explain.

I fucking love jazz. It’s probably the one thing I love most next to God. I can’t say I love my wife and kids more because I don’t have either. So yeah, jazz is my second favorite thing in the world. Which is why I get frustrated when people who aren’t super into jazz hear a song title like “It’s All Right with Me” or “Desafinado” and ask, “Oh, that Frank Sinatra song?”

Yes…those were Frank Sinatra songs; you’re technically correct. However, they were jazz songs by Cole Porter and Antonio Carlos Jobim much earlier. Frank just covered them in a much more pop and “for the masses” style.

The more I think about it, I don’t really blame Sinatra OR his audience…I’m not sure where to place the blame. He was great at covering songs. That’s a true talent. But I can’t blame his audience either because jazz is kind of a niche genre that lots of people just can’t get into…but everyone likes Frank Sinatra, so people automatically gravitate towards his songs. It’s frustrating. 90% of people don’t know who Cole Porter and Antonio Carlos Jobim…but everyone knows who Frank Sinatra is. So of course they’re going to think that these jazz standards were originally Frank Sinatra tunes…because that’s all they’ve heard.

If only his albums had listed/credited the original musicians by the song titles, and maybe if he’d mentioned them during his live performances, people would know.

He’s kind of like the Michael Bublé of the 20th century. Only in this case, I prefer his original songs like “My Way” and “New York, New York” over his watered down jazz covers, but the other way around with Michael.

Frank Sinatra was an extremely talented musician, no doubt, but he’s quite overrated in my opinion. And while I don’t think it was intentional, he kind of took away some of the glory from the original musicians. I think part of that may be because of the era we’re living in now. When he originally sang “It’s All Right with Me” in the 1950s, I would assume more of his audience had heard Cole Porter’s and/or Ella Fitzgerald’s version because it was more recent. Now that it’s the 21st century, people have only heard Sinatra’s version.

But that begs the question…why did his become more popular now? Just because it’s more recent or because people just don’t like jazz anymore?

Give me your thoughts, and don’t hate on me for disliking Frank Sinatra. I don’t dislike him; I just dislike how his modern fans receive his music. I love his original tunes.

This is adjusting the beginner hypertrophy program, im a few months in and the results have been amazing. I just wanted to hit a few muscles its missing. It’s also based on whats available in my apt gym. The dumbbells will become a smith machine when I go past the max weights we have, my building gym doesn’t have a barbell. At that point I may join a real gym, but you cant beat the convenience.

Edit: goals: im 5’11 160 lbs, got a little belly fat but otherwise extremely scrawny. Body fat was like above 18% when i started snd now im 17%. Getting to like 15 would be sick. The above (minus curls and calf and lat rises) has already filled out my arms and chest significantly when you compare the pics. Id love to keep building that out. I like the lean but cut look, i dont need to get huge. So just recomp and fill it out to look (and feel) good. I tend to do these every other day followed by 30 min of an inclined walk for zone 2 cardio, so I have 48 hrs of rest. Try to hit 140 g’s of protein every day at least, miss here and there but been okay.

Adding to a program

Im using a program and i want to add a few workouts in the mix that I feel like its missing. But when I add them they don’t save them as part of my workout, just saves for that specific workout. Is there a way to do it so it shows up every week?

Restaurant recommendations near Pier 17 for a Saturday Night?

Hey I'm looking for dinner recs around pier 17 to hit up before a concert. The only things I have saved are Old Mates Pub, which seems a bit heavy for the mood, and Pearl Diner which is RIP, and Maison Passerelle, but def looking for something more low key.

Biceps and calves?

I have been following the beginner trainer for hypertrophy for about 4 months, 3 days a week, and its been great. One thing i noticed is nothing added for biceps or calves. Does it need it? It feels like the least changed part of my body so far.Any feedback in general?

Extending the 2 months free deal

We’re in a new building and got the 2 month free deal. If the rent went up it’s fine we can afford it, but I’d rather not. (Who would?)

But heres the deal: they are struggling to fill units in the building. Does this give us any leverage if we hint at leaving and asking for the rent to remain the same or a smaller increase? We also have a great relationship with the super if that has any weight.

Im sure in most cases the answer is “no” but the fact that theres a ton of vacancy in the SUMMER is telling. They keep sending out referral bonus offers for helping fill units.

Max out dumbells

My gym stops at 50lb dumbbells. Im there for romanian deadlift and expect to be there for benchpress by next month or so. At that point do I just switch to a smith machine?

Also this is my first time working out, ive just been going through the hypertrophy training on the app and watching youtube tutorials. My progress is great, but is there a point where I should consider a trainer? Or as long as I’m progressing at a reasonable pace and taking my time, I’ll be fine switching to bigger weights? I guess the smith machine seems technically easier since it’s on a track.

And lastly should I just stick w the Hevy algorithm or does it need adjusting after like 3 months or so from the beginner/ intermediate setting?

Thanks!

Dead hang form or alternative

I’ve been doing dead hangs to stretch out my back and help with posture from having a desk job. I also do stuff like face pulls, planks, and a bunch of stretches specifically for posture.

Lately when I do dead hangs my right middle finger has a sharp pain, feels like a nerve and then there’s a little numbness if I hold through the whole minute. I’m not looking for medical advice. I’m wondering does this have something to do with my form, and if not, is there an alternative exercise that gets a similar result that I could do while I wait for my finger to heal(assuming its just been strained)?

Goodwill equivalent

(For context goodwill is a thrift store with very cheap second hand objects and clothing.)

Is there a goodwill equivalent in barcelona that has lots of knickknacks and misc objects? Specifically for random the objects, less so clothing. I came across humana but it seems like it’s more about clothing.
