How do you manage being surrounded by anti-trumpists ?

Family, friends, work, everybody hates him for various reasons, but most of the time it's about Trump's unpredictable and goofy communication (a reason I could agree with), but never about his concrete policies.

And when my most literate friends or relatives argue against his policies, like ICE, I always find myself explaining that, "Yes, but America voted for it," and adding that if they are against that, they are against democracy itself.

You can't imagine how many times I have met this pattern.

How do you do?

I've sold impulsively all my crypto for DRAM last month (best decision I've made)

All my crypto loss (thousands of $) have been recovered with this simple move. I took profit yesterday, and now I keep a smaller but decent bag of DRAM.

I followed the fomo and was lucky, now i'm done with impulsive investing and just follow a 80/20 plan (80% global etf and 20% specific stocks, etf, crypto...).

Doing a DCA

I'm wondering whether a DCA strategy needs to follow a strict schedule (e.g., every week or every month), or if it's okay to be more flexible.

I already know the total amount of USD I want to invest for the rest of the year ($7,000). Should I simply divide $7,000 by the number of weeks remaining and invest that amount every week, or is it also reasonable to buy manually whenever there are market dips throughout the month? Dunno if I'm clear.

EDIT : Thanks you all for your kind answers. I've just lump sump all the money I wanted to invest in a core equity etf.

I took a bit of profit guys, sorry

I have the impression to be a traitor but I have to. I've sold 25% of my DRAM position and bought some VOO.

The summer before the PhD!

I think it's a redundant topic on your subreddit, guys: that summer before the PhD starts in September.

My master's thesis was accepted this morning. I've been accepted into a PhD program with funding (a small amount, but enough to live on) and on the thesis topic I wanted. It's a PhD in the humanities, so you obviously understand that it was quite hard to get a fully funded PhD position these days... Harder than finishing my master's.

It's still crazy to me that someone is willing to give money to a young guy just to work on social science stuff. TBH, I chose to do a PhD because I still want to stay at university and extend my youth, in a sense. I don't really sacralize the field, and I really think academia is broken in many ways, mostly in the humanities, but I will not argue this in this post.

Anyway everything is settled, and I have nothing to care about for the next three months! I always like these moments, when you're between the relief of finishing your master's and the excitement of starting the PhD (it was the same between after the bachelor). Most of the posts here make me a little afraid of it, though.

How did you spend your summer? Was it good? Did it feel like your "last summer"?

What to do with this portfolio?

Hello, I think I need help with my portfolio since it look a bit hazardous. I explain what was my initial strategy :

I started DCA last year and dont wanted to be “worldly” diversified but more bet on semiconductor, ai, tech like many here are doing.

Since 3/4 months I started investing in other ETFs to be more exposed in HBM and also for conversion fees raison (sometime I have deposit in USD and sometimes I have CAD).

I want to keep this cap : being expose to global tech, with an emphasis on semi, infrastructures and software. What do you recommend ? Also keep in mind that VFV DRAM SOXX ARTY are in a tfsa account that I already maxxed for the year. Thanks to you and be indulgent, I’m pretty new in this…

Why is overlaping ETFs a bad thing ?

Hello, I'm kinda new and I have some interrogation. I have multiple ETFs in my portfolio, I did the mix in a specific way to have more exposure to some industries and less to others.

Why do some people assume that if I invest in ETFs, it's because I want to be globally diversified?

Diversification is a spectrum isn't it ? You can be diversified and still want to bet a bit more in a specific thematic or industry. Also, if overlaping doesn't add more fee, why it is bad then ?

For example, having VOO and QQQ 50% each. If the strategy is to have more exposure to US tech and Softwares, why is it a bad thing then ?

It was a nice ride

My mother was more of a Potterhead, so when she took me to the movies, it was for Harry Potter rather than The Lord of the Rings. Because of that, I was “lucky” enough not to have seen the LOTR films before reading the books.

It took me about six months to finish them since I’m a slow ESL reader and was reading other things at the same time. The experience was smooth and enjoyable; Tolkien was truly a lover of nature and language. I’ll watch the movies eventually, but I’ll definitely wait a little while and enjoy that strange feeling of fulfillment and emptiness that comes after finishing something big !

Surgery Changed My Life ! (Do it)

My gyno wasn’t huge, but it was big enough to make me ashamed of my whole body and completely destroy my confidence. I had good-looking, jacked friends, and I was always scared to go to the beach or pool parties with them. I never had a girlfriend. I was constantly afraid that my puffy nipples would show through my shirt. Damn, dude, what a shitty time.

I got surgery at 21, lost a bunch of fat, and started exercising a bit once I had healed. To be honest, I was skeptical that surgery could actually make such a huge complex disappear. But two months after the surgery, everything was gone. No shame, no fear. I was even proud of my body for the first time in my life. I could go to the beach or the pool without thinking for even a second about how I looked.

I became way more confident, and I met my girlfriend the summer after my surgery. That was five years ago, and we’re still together. Today, I hit the gym seriously and do a lot of cardio.

A small surgery made my life so much easier and more fulfilling. It created a real domino effect. Save some money and do it with a good doctor. It’s not the most expensive surgery, so with some savings, it’s possible. I was broke as hell and still found a way to make it happen.

If this flaw is making your life hell, don’t waste your only youth being ashamed. Save the money, get it done, and move on.

I’m 26 now, and I know my early twenties would have been completely different without it.

Every performative bookshelver I’ve encountered can’t say anything meaningful about the beautiful, pristine books they’re showcasing. Most of the people I’ve met who are truly into literature were either old and messy scholars or hobos. And because I’m broke and need to switch appartement every two years, I sell or trade every book I’ve read at the end of the year.

Same formula but good business :

- obvious stoic advices but reshaped in multiple ways

- a huge part on the author grind ("I was miserable, now I'm successful")

- from the particular to the general ("it works for me so it will works for all of you")

- NY times or Forbes quotes

- author got a deeper sales funnel (online courses, blog,, newsletters...)

- author became rich by saying advice on money, management, leadership, marketing or social skill (no phd or specific business success)

"this book changed my life" damn bro, there is no such a thing

Well, out of all my applications, I’ve only received one offer... and it comes with a very modest fellowship: CAD 55,000 for the entire program, which is almost nothing… It's a political science phd.

Do you still think it’s a good opportunity considering that:

  • I don’t really enjoy anything other than research
  • I live with my girlfriend (so rent is split)
  • My dad could help support me if needed
  • I would be free to work on exactly the thesis topic I want
  • My supervisor would be the faculty director

I believe the fellowship can be combined with other grants, but I would need to look into that and apply after enrolling.

What do you think?

So apparently, it’s not plantar fasciitis but more likely myositis/fallen arches — a muscle problem rather than an issue with the fascia. He told me this is good news. Even though I’ve been in pain for 6 months now, he thinks I just need to get insoles to correct my foot mechanics and that it should resolve.

What do you think, guys? Does this make sense, or is he just trying to sell me insoles?
