"fsck.ext4: Input/output error while trying to re-open /deu/mapper/pve-root"

Hello all,

I've had my home server running on proxmox for about 2 months now, and it's been running smoothly enough that I haven't had to touch the back end of things for a few weeks. Until I tried to use my media server this morning and the whole computer was down.

It looks like it crashed or possibly lost power at some point. It no longer boots; it powers on fine, I can access the UEFI just fine and I can use a flash drive with a live environment of Debian, but it gets stuck when I try to boot to the installed Proxmox.

See the picture for the full message. The main error seems to be, "fsck.ext4: Input/output error while trying to re-open /dev/mapper/pve-root".

I tried just running fsck on the file it listed, which seemed to run successfully but didn't actually fix anything.

All the expected drives show up when I use lsblk. I tried using the memcheck tool to check my memory, and I used other built-in software to check the drives. Everything came back clean.

Interestingly I tried using Proxmox installation media to start a rescue boot and it gave me the same error. Additionally after troubleshooting independently for 1-2 hours I decided to just start with a clean install, because it was kind of a mess anyways due to my learn-as-I-go setup. I opened the exact same ISO I used to install this OS 2 months ago, and the install failed because it couldn't partition the drive. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with this but I figured I'd add it.

I am using a Dell Inspiron 3650 that I added some HDDs into for storage. All the software and bootable media is on a 128gb ssd.

If there's any other information you need I'll be happy to provide it.

Encouraging my marble queen?

I've had this marble queen pothos for years. I grew it from a propagation I was given. It's never really taken off, though.

Currently it's getting 12hrs every day of direct light from a grow light (this was not always the case, but it has been at this light level for something like 6 months. I've also tried 8hrs/day, and at my old apartment it just got sunlight through the window). I water it by completely saturating the soil when the soil is dry. I've given it a dose or two of liquid fertilizer which hasn't done anything. I honestly don't remember what the soil is, but probably a mixture of miracle gro and some sphagnum moss or coco coir.

I'm not sure what I'm missing here?

Let me know if you have any questions.

Driving myself crazy trying to selfhost a game server

Hello. See title. I'm at my wits' end here and I need to stop doing sunk cost fallacy on new things that don't work before my wallet is empty.

I've been trying to host a game server on my home server (runs proxmox, game server is on AMP in a container running debian). After hours of pulling my hair out trying to figure out why my port forwarding wasn't working, I realized that my apartment complex routes the wifi in a way that makes it impossible for me to use port forwarding or anything that relies on changing router settings (I have my own middleman router for my apartment, which is why I didn't realize what was up).

I tried to track down how to use a VPN to allow connections. I don't even remember what any of my thought processes were anymore but I decided to try and use a VPS as a middleman between my server and outside connections. Spent a few hours tinkering with Oracle Cloud's free stuff before I bought a cheap plan from RackNerd. I have been trying to implement this with the RackNerd VPS but I haven't been able to figure it out yet.

I'm only trying to run a small server with friends. I don't care if they can see my IP. I have spent my entire Saturday agonizing over this and I need to go do something else before my brain melts. How do I do this. help

PC has power but screen doesn't turn on.

Hi all,

I got a Dell Inspiron 3650 tower off of eBay so I could make a home server. I cracked the case open to look at all the components and clean it if needed, but I haven't attached or removed any components intentionally.

It came from the seller with win11 installed. I booted it briefly to make sure it worked and then I used a flash drive with Ventoy to install Proxmox. Install went fine. It rebooted into Proxmox and I was able to open up the web interface on my usual laptop just fine. I looked around in the interface a bit and then shut down the computer to go do something else.

When I came back to it later I hit the button on the tower, fans spin on, everything seems to be running.... I can no longer access the web interface and when I attached it back to my monitor to troubleshoot, it doesn't display anything on the screen. The monitor doesn't even sense that it's receiving any data.

I reattached the keyboard and mouse and I was unable to boot into the bios. When I attach the mouse it doesn't seem to turn on/get any power (no indicator light I can use to check with the keyboard). The mouse still works on other computers, as does the display and the associated cables. The debug light on the tower isn't trying to communicate anything either, just solid green.

Not really sure what happened here. I opened the case again to see if I had accidentally loosened any cables and I didn't see anything. I pressed them all down into the sockets and checked to see if anything changed on powering up, and nothing did.

I've never set up a NAS or Proxmox before but I use Linux (mainly Debian) for all my daily computer tasks. I have also loaded linux onto a few other computers with no giant issues, using this same ventoy flash drive

Any thoughts?

Specs:

CPU: i3-6100

Ram: 6gb

Storage: 128gb SSD

Suggestions to improve laptop speed?

Hello all,

my partner got a used ASUS Vivobook Max X541UA a while ago. I thought that we would be able to get a cheap computer to run okay (I'm a college student and he's disabled so we're short on cash) by loading linux onto it but it's... unusably slow. I'm comfortable exchanging parts, especially because this is a somewhat large and old laptop with easy-to-change storage and memory. The issue, as put by my partner:

>"it will open and run somewhat for a couple minutes but its ability to handle any program starts quickly declining until it just freezes and has to be turned off

>it cant even return from idle because its become unresponsive so i have to turn it all the way off and back on every time."

I'm not expecting a gaming computer out of this, just a computer that can be used for light tasks like browsing the internet and word processing.

CPU: Intel Core i7-7500U

Storage: 1TB HDD

Memory: 8GB DDR4

OS: Debian 13 (Trixie)

I know that the HDD is not ideal. Until very recently I thought the previous owner had swapped it to an SSD, but it's surprisingly difficult to find the exact specs of this computer without cracking it open to check. If you think it is the likely culprit of the issues then we'll shell out for a different one, but please advise me; I am familiar with computer parts separately, but I'm not very familiar with how they all interact and work together.

Pet limits and ESA letters

So, my roommate's partner (RP) is moving in with us shortly due to suddenly losing their housing. Our apartment allows two pets at maximum, and we already have two cats. RP also has a cat which they want to bring. It would be very feasible to get our animals certified as ESA animals because we all have mental health issues which benefit from our cats, but if we don't need to certify all of them then it would obviously be easier to not have to do it.

My question comes down to this: if we have 2 non-ESA animals on our lease which limits tenants to 2 pets, and want to add an ESA animal to our apartment, do you think they would try to tell us that we need to get rid of one of our non-ESA animals?

I don't know if this is something that anyone has experience with, but it would be wildly helpful if anyone can weigh in. I'm going to ask our leasing office tomorrow, but it would be nice to hear what others think on the matter or if there is already legal precedent for this.

Airsacculitus?

My mother brought home some hybrid chicks a few weeks ago, they all seem to be in good health but this one has this strange air sac under its wings. This is present on both sides/symmetrical, not just the side shown. I'm seeing airsacculitus when I search this online, but I'm not seeing anything about the sac inflating in time with breathing. Is this indeed airsacculitus, or something else?

Thanks!

Hello all,

My partner (26, he/him) has psoriatic arthritis and has been struggling with it since losing insurance about 6 months ago. He's not eligible for any government assistance programs at present due to us living in a state without expanded Medicaid (hoping to change that next year though. I love Texas but I also hate it sometimes).

He was on Otezla for a while because it is what he was on when he still had insurance ( and was able to continue to take it with the patient help program), but he fell off of it a few months back since Accredo is Accredo so he was constantly running out for weeks on end, and ADHD does not make it any easier to deal with their BS.

If he had anything to point in a hopeful direction medication-wise then we would probably be more enthusiastic about spending money to find a rheumatologist in the area (his old rheumatologist retired and we moved cities shortly afterwards). Right now he just uses a topical for psoriasis and ibuprofen as needed. Which is not great for the kidneys especially on top of his having diabetes (thank god he doesn't need insulin for that, just metformin which is extremely cheap out of pocket).

Anyways, to summarize my question--does anyone know of typically-effective medications for psoriatic arthritis that are not thousands of dollars per month out of pocket?

Thank you in advance, I hope you are all doing well. Sending love from Texas!

Hello all, I adopted this cat something like 8 months ago. I am very familiar with cat ownership, but I have never had a cat this nervous about things. She has become a lot more trusting and is a cuddle bug, but she is Very quick to dash away at lightning speed if something happens that she didn't expect (eg. Someone else in the room stands up, I put my hand on her back when she wasn't looking....). She is just a very jumpy animal.

The real issue is that she HATES having her nails clipped, but every time she rockets out of my lap she makes use of her claws to get away as fast as possible. This is very harmful to my legs 🥲 If she wasn't like this I would probably just accept that she's just going to have sharp claws. But I am sincerely covered in scratches from her and it's not my favorite thing...

She is tolerant of having her paws fondled when she's feeling relaxed, and she's not afraid of the clipper when I bring it out, but as soon as she feels it clamped onto her claws she bolts. I tried using a file once and she had the same reaction. I briefly thought that claw caps could be the answer until I looked them up and saw that you're supposed to pre-clip the claws before they go on anyways.

Are there any other ideas out there? Please save me. There are literal gouges in my wooden dining table from her getting startled while she was sitting up there one time and I don't want that on my leg
