The MOST PREVALENT AI Writing Tell

Em dashes are often cited as a dead giveaway of AI writing. But do you agree that em dashes are NOT the TOP giveaway of AI writing but this specific parallel structure? I see it all the time especially on social media, e.g., Threads, Facebook, Instagram, etc.

PS. Of course I recognize the fact that pre-ChatGPT writers have used these sentence structures and things of that nature. But it's also true that LLMs are obsessed over them.

Earning from a US-based platform and getting taxed in the US

hello po. so i have received a mail from this US-based platform I’ve been earning side income from. Tina-tax na nila ako sa US, and I just need advice on what to do with my earnings (after the US taxes), like idedeclare ko pa rin ba siya as is sa ITR ko (8% IT rate), need ko ba i-tick yung #15 sa form and if so, what difference will it make? may mababawasan man lang ba sa babayaran ko or wala?

finally, if need ko pa rin ifile itong earnings ko from the platform even though I was already taxed in the US, does it not constitute double taxation? May idea na ako but it would give me peace of mind if i also hear from others. I will raise this pa rin sa RDO namin. Just need some preliminary advice.

In Philippine slang, a “kamote driver" (or rider) is a derogatory term for a reckless, undisciplined, and selfish motorist. We all know it most commonly refers to motorcycle riders, but it definitely applies to any vehicle operator who endangers others on the road and lacks road courtesy.

In your experience, what model do these allegedly kamote car drivers usually drive?

Have you ever experienced being discriminated against because you own a ‘cheaper’ car?

Curious if may nakaranas na dito maliitin o ibully ng fellow car owner just because you drive a cheaper car. Like, a road rage involving you and another owner driving a higher-end car.

What did you do?

Do you also experience a headache after applying a haircare product, specifically hair wax/pomade?

Hey guys. I think this is the perfect sub to ask this.

Meron ba dito nakaka-experience ng headache after mag-apply ng hair wax? Di naman sumasakit agad ulo ko, but it will eventually hurt a bit afterwards, na magtutuloy tuloy hangga't hindi ako naliligo to shampoo it off. The headache is quite light and hindi naman severe, but it still bothers me a bit.

Also, do you have any recommendations for hair wax na walang side effects whatsoever? Gambit gamit ko now and okay naman siya actually. I've used popular brands like Gatsby before and same - may headache effect siya.

Salamat mga ser!

I can’t see the ‘repost’ button on the Medium mobile app

I saw it through a browser on my laptop though. Does anyone know where can I see it? Is there a step I’m missing? Thanks!

Title pretty much sums up my question: would you advise putting a “student driver” sticker at the back of your car as a firsttime car owner and newbie driver, hoping experienced drivers will be more patient with you on the road, or they will only use it to bully you, so to speak?

Or is there a story you can share about a similar situation? Thank you po sa mga sasagot!

When do you normally receive your Medium earnings?

On the Medium app, it says the transfer was initiated on May 6.

Medium then sent an email on Thursday, May 7 (EST), saying they had sent last month’s total payout.

Normally, the payment reflects in my bank account within 24 to 48 hours (excluding Saturday and Sunday).

Today is May 11, so it’s already been more than 48 hours, and I still haven’t received the payment.

I know Medium has a disclaimer saying payouts may take 5 to 7 business days, but in my experience, they usually send the payments pretty quickly. Well, except this month…

What’s the longest delay you’ve ever experienced with Medium payouts, if any?

Also, how long does it usually take for your earnings to reflect in your bank account after receiving the email from Medium?

Thank you so much!

Anyone here currently suffer from a shoulder / rotator cuff injury? Nung January pa itong sa akin, and since then I’ve avoided pullups and bench and dumbbell presses because it hurts when i do these movements.

I did a quick Google search and learned that full recovery may take up to 6 months. Although hindi na masyado masakit, I’m still scared that I might reinjure myself, so yung mga shoulder and chest exercises ko, iilan lang, tapos moderate intensity.

What chest and shoulder exercises would you recommend that would not involve overhead movements? Thanks!

Hahahahahahha.

I did this with Oppenheimer, One Battle After Another, Hoppers, Project Hail Mary, and most recently, Michael.

LOL

Kung di niyo to ginagawa, dare I ask na gawin niyo next time so I don’t feel alone? Eme.

Thoughts on this?

Yesterday I posted about being surprised publication editors on Medium don’t earn money off it. Now Medium just announced they’re finally rewarding them. Long overdue, methinks.

Do you do this too? 😅 What other ‘quirks’ you do that scream *gym rat* and/or *fitness is my passion*?

I didn't immediately hop on the generative AI bandwagon (neither did my early marketing clients, who preferred human-quality writing over AI slop) when ChatGPT was launched.

I only started writing with AI (and reluctantly so) when an employer not only allowed AI but encouraged its usage to increase and speed up content production.

Here's a story of how I turned from anti-AI to learning-to-live-with-technology-and-using-it-to-my-advantage: https://medium.com/generative-ai/writing-with-ai-or-how-i-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-love-the-prompt-ca28fe8310e8

Comments and feedback here are very much welcome!

I was quite surprised when I first learned that editors don't really earn from, well, editing and managing Medium publications. I've heard it's mostly a passion project for them and that they just want to help fellow writers get more exposure for their work. Not a few publications are one-man shows, which is really time-consuming if the pub receives multiple submissions on a daily basis, must have been exhausting.

If you're a Medium editor, what makes you motivated to do this thankless job?

Except chocolate. Any strawberry enjoyers here?

Salamat!

A few months before ChatGPT was launched, I just quit my office job to pursue a freelance career writing articles for small websites.

My inaugural blog assignments were still fresh in my mind, some of them rather bizarre:

‘Can spiders survive being vacuumed?’

‘Why are carpenter ants marching out of my bathroom sink?’

‘Can you eat ChapStick?’

Unlike the bold political commentaries I wrote in college as a student journalist, or my humble handful of essays in a national broadsheet, these articles don’t have my byline.

And yet, just seeing them occupy a semipermanent space on a newish blogsite was enough to have me beaming inwardly with pride.

I know it’s naive, but these are a choreographed conglomeration of words and sentences my brain had strung together to form a giant block of curated text.

Bylined or not, I wrote this shit and I’m being paid for this shit. They’re not worthy of any awards, but the mere fact that I wrote them with my god-given brain and god-darned hands gives me indescribable happiness.

Everything changed when the A.I. forces attacked.

You’ve probably seen loads of these headlines in recent years… that some large language model Trojan-horsing as a helpful tool is taking over our craft and threatening our livelihoods.

In the marketing world, demand for human writers to produce multiple long-form, authentic articles had cratered.

For what use are several writers on your payroll when LLMs can flesh out 1,500-word blog posts in a quarter of a minute, with no convoluted grammar to even warrant the painstaking scrutiny of a senior editor?

Amid the twin nightmares of generative A.I. replacing human scribes and rendering writing jobs obsolete, I vowed to keep creating content manually as a form of protest, quietly joining my peers in condemning this injustice.

I wrote a piece on how my anti-AI views as a writer changed, here: https://medium.com/generative-ai/writing-with-ai-or-how-i-learned-to-stop-worrying-and-love-the-prompt-ca28fe8310e8
