Is the American compulsion to state your measurements rooted in college sports?

European Bill-head here. How Y'ALL doin'?

A burning question I have refers to the habit of American men to tell other people their height and weight. What I've observed over the years, reading countless online discussions, is that when the topic of conversation veers into anything bordering on manly, an American commentator will swiftly pipe up with a 'as a 6'3, 270 guy'.

And it really doesn't happen when Europeans are talking to each other. Very little need to tell others how tall or heavy you are.

What I wonder, does this have its roots in college sports? Football especially. Everybody is introduced with their measurements included and when some Iowa farmer is 6'5" and 350 pounds, the viewers can conclude 'Now, that's a big boy!' European sports, be it soccer, fencing or cross-contry skiing, are not that concerned with physical measurements, so maybe that's the cultural disction here?
