Ebony and Ivory

Jim Hosking has a track record for making the weirdest and most surreal comedies ever.

If you took Napoleon Dynamite and added equal parts pink flamingos, this would be the result.

You'll love it or hate it, no in-between.

Soft and Quiet

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14557188/

Never thought a pie reveal could be so shocking.

This movie made me angry all the way through. The ideology of the cast of women and the increasingly terrible decisions made by them caused me to feel incredibly uncomfortable and angry throughout the duration of this film, but i mean that in the best way possible.

Much like Hate Crime, this movie was born from a deep sense of fear that the director had about events like this unfolding out of her control. She was also inspired by the Central Park Birdwatching incident (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central\_Park\_birdwatching\_incident).

Anyway amazing performances from the women in this movie, and an incredibly tense movie beginning to end.

If you havent seen it, go in blind.

Buffet Infinity

This is a wild one.

It feels like a series of Tim and Eric infomercials at first, and the longer it goes on the more things feel off in a very bad way.

Lovecraftian type existential horror, cultist type takeover stuff, analog found footage, and all sorts of stuff mixed into 80 and 90s style local commercials and infomercials.

It feels like an adult swim bumper that's been stretched out into an entire feature length film.

This may be the best thing ive seen in quite a while.

Looking for a certain spot with a recruit able monster.

This spot is described as

"Secret Spot rocks north of the snow-peninsula of the NE continent in ocean (Night)"

That can only be number 48 on this map but its not there. I checked 27 also and nothing.

There's supposed to be a merman monster there but I cant find it.

Speak no Evil 2022

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14253846/

I watched this movie randomly on Shudder one day after running out of Joe Bob, and it was a movie that has never left me.

It starts out slow and feels more like an awkward comedy for the first half or so, but when it gets going it really cranks the fucking knob all the way up.

Its a movie that has been argued about a ton ever since it came out, with one side of people hating the decisions of the lead characters and the other side being sympathetic with them.

The thing that entertains me about that is that there was a remake wity McAvoy not long after that basically "fixed" all of the bad decisions made in the Dutch original, and people still hated it, because it was too different from the original. Its a case of "give them what they want and they're still complaining."

Both versions are good and very watchable, but i feel the original is more shocking and disturbing.

Really fucked up movie.

Platoon

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091763

Another movie I probably saw when I was way too young, and one that always stuck with me. Between this and Full Metal Jacket I was pretty much scared away from joining any branch of military.

This is a war film (more anti war, but realistically, they all are) that Oliver Stone claims was created to mimic his own experiences in Vietnam and the nasty shit he went through.

Tom Berenger and Charlie Sheen give career high performances in this, as does Willem Dafoe.

There's a lot of gross treatment of Vietnamese villagers in this, including unjustified murder and (attempted) gang rape by the soldiers which is rather disturbing to watch.

This film also fell into a lot of criticism due to its portrayal of black soldiers. One journalist stated that the black people in this film acted like idiots and cowards and all the commanding officers were white, so there wasn't any positive black representation here.

A difficult watch by any measure and not one that I care to visit again anytime soon.

Zodiac

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0443706/

Holy fuck this movie is so good, in my opinion this is Finchers best movie and one of the few movies in existence to make me feel genuinely creeped out and totally immersed.

Everyone puts in a stellar performance here, but for my money John Carroll Lynch gave a performance of a lifetime in this movie and pulled off playing Arthur Leigh Allen so well that I still tend to get creeped out when I see him in other roles.

My understanding is that this movie is very accurate in most of the details of the film, but has met with a lot of criticism for strongly hinting that Arthur was Zodiac and for exploiting the tragedy in a way that glorified the killings rather than giving the victims their due humanity.

If youre a fan of true crime or of creepy police thrillers, do yourself a favor and watch Zodiac.

The Accused 1988

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094608/

This is a tough fucking movie, and one that I will probably never watch again.

Jodie Foster seems to be in a disproportionate amount of fucked up and disturbing movies that are still in the mainstream. This movie for example, won an Oscar and several other awards as well.

This movie is about a girl who goes to a bar, drinks too much and gets attacked and gangraped by the patrons of the bar.

I was born in 81 and remember when this movie came out. I probably saw it way before I probably should have but it was a lesson in victim blaming that I learned earlier than I should have but it also helped me during my own turbulent times growing up.

If you are triggered by sexual assault, skip this one.

PSA : a note about spoilers.

Ive tried to keep rules to a minimum here for the sake of not bogging the sub down with ambiguity, however, there's been an issue that consistently pops up.

Spoilers.

Now, ill keep spoilers out of titles so things dont get spoiled for you involuntarily, but if you decide to go into a discussion about a film you havent seen, read the post, read every single comment and every reply, then you have successfully spoiled yourself on the movie.

I dont want to make it an official rule since it should be common sense, but I will do so if it becomes a consistent complaint from people.

I created a subreddit for a game on reddit, and now the developer is asking for either control of the subreddit or for me to remove official artwork.

I invited the dev as a sign of respect and now they are asking for top mod spot and control of the sub since I used official artwork.

What should I do about this situation? Are fan communities copyright infringement?

Hostel

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0450278/

Im surprised this doesn't have its own entry at this point, but I feel it deserves one.

Hostel is an odd movie. The first half of the movie is a bunch of privileged American tourists going on a sex/party tour of Europe. One night they got lured into a specific Hostel by some attractive women and we're essentially kidnapped and taken to a dungeonesque place where rich people pay for the experience of murdering people without consequence.

From there the rest of the film is extreme horror/gore and basically set the tone for a long series of "torture porn" type films.

The film was accused of classism, xenophobia, and misogyny and caused all sorts of pearl clutching on release.
